The kidneys serve an essential regulatory role in most of the animals, including vertebrates and some invertebrates. They are important in the urinary system and also serve homeostatic functions like regulation of electrolytes, maintenance of acid-base balance and regulation of blood pressure (via maintaining salt and water balance). They also serve as natural filter of the blood and remove wastes that are diverted to the urinary bladder. By producing urine, the kidneys excrete wastes such as urea and ammonia. The kidneys are responsible for reabsorption of water, glucose, amino acids and trace elements. They also produce hormones including calcitriol, renin and erythropoietin. The kidney is approximately 11–14 cm long, 6 cm wide and 4 cm thick. Each adult kidney weighs between 125 and 170 g in males and between 115 and 155 g in females. The left kidney is typically slightly larger than the right kidney. Each kidney is made up of about 1 million microprocessor units called nephrons

Birds are the important components of the food chain. Birds are vertebrate warm-blooded animals. Birds are ideal bio-indicators and useful models for studying a variety of environmental problems. As increasingly more attention is now being given to ecological studies, the methods employed in field ornithology warrant a closer examination. While in the developed world there has been extensive research on the standardization of bird-count techniques. Population density is the size of a population in relation to a definite unit of space. It is generally expressed as the number of individuals or the populations’ biomass per unit area or volume in Campus of Rani Anna Government College, Tirunelveli India. There are a wide variety of field and statistical techniques for assessing animal abundance, which include complete counts, partial counts, and capture methods. The present study reports for 20 different bird species from 11 orders and 20 families were sighted from the selected sites in the hostel, ground and garden area in the college campus

Heidegger on Rhetoric: An Existential Deconstruction of the Notion of Communication

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to show how Martin Heidegger’s phenomenological interpretation of Aristotle’s theory of rhetoric can be interpreted usefully to understand the existential dimension of communication. Heidegger’s treatment of communication as a phenomenon is ontologically broader as he locates it within the existential analytics of Dasein. Taking Heidegger’s 1924 Marburg lecture, Being and Time and other texts dealing with the problem of the being of language as theoretical sources, this study first presents the importance of Heidegger’s conception of rhetoric and then shows how this throws light on the ontological aspects of communication as such. Human beings in their basic mode of existence as being-in-the-world and speaking-with-one-another is always already in communication through language. If rhetoric is a way of having the existential view about how matters present themselves in a particular manner by virtue of speaking about it with-one-another, then it is in the region of the doxa of people. Further, how existential communication works in our concrete life is demonstrated through a rhetorical analysis of the film Blow-Up

Investigation of Temperature Drift with Thermocyclic Oxidation on K-Type Bare Thermocouples

The irrevocable variations in the thermoelectric properties arise in normally used bare type-K thermocouples that are subjected to high temperatures. Over an extended period of time, these long-term modifications may manifest themselves as a systematic shift in the thermocouple’s characteristics. This paper investigates the temporal instability of thermocouple output at temperatures over 800 °C. This investigation focuses on the change in temperature output that occurs in thermocouples of varying diameters after they have been subjected to high temperatures for more than 365 hours. This data was used to assess the relationship between the amount of temperature drift with different lead diameters and the degradation of the material compositions of thermocouple thermoelements. It is critical to determine the pace at which the thermocouple material degrades over time. This paper concentrates in detail on the drift analysis of thermocouples of different diameters which were tested at high temperatures with their segmental material compositions. Within the scope of this investigation, the elemental analysis of the thermocouple could be carried out using scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with an energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDAX) both before and after the thermocouple had degraded. The results show that the thermoelectric response decreases dramatically and the highest drift reaches to about 196.4 µV for (Ø0.51 mm), about 118.6 µV for (Ø1.29 mm) and 79.2 µV for (Ø2.05 mm) thermocouples, respectively at 800 °C after prolonged usage of 365 hours. The highest thermal drift was achieved with [90-10] vol% Ni-Cr / [95-05] vol % Ni-Al, Mn, Si composite thermocouples, which related to the increased amount of the 2-3 oxide layers that were formed in the composite of bare thermoelements

Ag-Vanadates/GO Nanocomposites by Aerosol-Assisted Spray Pyrolysis: Preparation and Structural and Electrochemical Characterization of a Versatile Material

    Get PDF
In this article, we describe the deposition by aerosol-assisted spray pyrolysis of different types of silver vanadate nanocomposites with and without graphene oxide (GO) on different substrates (carbon paper (CP) and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)). When deposited on CP, different amounts of GO were added to the Ag and V precursor solution to study the effect of GO on the physicochemical properties of the resulting Ag-vanadate. It is shown that the addition of GO leads mainly to the formation of nanoparticles of the Ag2V4O11 phase, whereas Ag2V4O11 and Ag3VO4 are obtained without the addition of GO. The morphology and chemical properties of the composites were determined by scanning and transmission electron microscopies, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and UV\u2013visible and Raman spectroscopies. In addition, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of such composites were studied by CV, linear sweep voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The ideal AgxVOy and GO ratio was optimized for obtaining higher photocurrent values and a good stability. The results showed that the presence of GO improves the electrical conductivity of the catalyst layer as well as the electron injection from the oxide to the electrode surface. The deposition of pure Ag2V4O11 on FTO does not lead to samples with stable PEC performances. Samples grown on CP supports showed an efficient electrochemical detection of small amounts of ethylenediamine in water solution

Gold Nanoparticles with Self-Assembled Cysteine Monolayer Coupled to Nitrate Reductase in Polypyrrole Matrix Enhanced Nitrate Biosensor

    Get PDF
We have developed here a novel, highly sensitive and selective nitrate (NO– 3) biosensor by covalent immobilization of nitrate reductase (NaR) in self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of cysteine on gold nanoparticles (GNP)-polypyrrole (PPy) modified platinum electrode. Incorporation of GNP in highly microporous PPy matrix was confirmed by morphological scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The electrochemical behavior of the NaR modified electrode exhibited the characteristic reversible redox peaks at the potential, –0.76 and –0.62 V versus Ag/AgCl. Further, the GNP-PPy nanocomposite enhanced the current response by 2-fold perhaps by enhancing the immobilization of NaR and also direct electron transfer between the deeply buried active site and the electrode surface. The common biological interferences like ascorbic acid, uric acid were not interfering with the NO– 3 measurement at low concentration levels. This biosensor showed a wide linear range of response over the concentration of NO– 3 from 1 μM to 1 mM, with higher sensitivity of 84.5 nA μM–1 and a detection limit of 0.5 μM. Moreover, the NO– 3 level present in the nitrate-rich beetroot juice and the NO– 3 release from the lipopolysaccharide treated human breast cancer cells were estimated
