Simple and Nearly Optimal Polynomial Root-finding by Means of Root Radii Approximation
We propose a new simple but nearly optimal algorithm for the approximation of
all sufficiently well isolated complex roots and root clusters of a univariate
polynomial. Quite typically the known root-finders at first compute some crude
but reasonably good approximations to well-conditioned roots (that is, those
isolated from the other roots) and then refine the approximations very fast, by
using Boolean time which is nearly optimal, up to a polylogarithmic factor. By
combining and extending some old root-finding techniques, the geometry of the
complex plane, and randomized parametrization, we accelerate the initial stage
of obtaining crude to all well-conditioned simple and multiple roots as well as
isolated root clusters. Our algorithm performs this stage at a Boolean cost
dominated by the nearly optimal cost of subsequent refinement of these
approximations, which we can perform concurrently, with minimum processor
communication and synchronization. Our techniques are quite simple and
elementary; their power and application range may increase in their combination

To dash or to dawdle: verb-associated speed of motion influences eye movements during spoken sentence comprehension
In describing motion events verbs of manner provide information about the speed of agents or objects in those events. We used eye tracking to investigate how inferences about this verb-associated speed of motion would influence the time course of attention to a visual scene that matched an event described in language. Eye movements were recorded as participants heard spoken sentences with verbs that implied a fast (“dash”) or slow (“dawdle”) movement of an agent towards a goal. These sentences were heard whilst participants concurrently looked at scenes depicting the agent and a path which led to the goal object. Our results indicate a mapping of events onto the visual scene consistent with participants mentally simulating the movement of the agent along the path towards the goal: when the verb implies a slow manner of motion, participants look more often and longer along the path to the goal; when the verb implies a fast manner of motion, participants tend to look earlier at the goal and less on the path. These results reveal that event comprehension in the presence of a visual world involves establishing and dynamically updating the locations of entities in response to linguistic descriptions of events
A cross-center smoothness prior for variational Bayesian brain tissue segmentation
Suppose one is faced with the challenge of tissue segmentation in MR images,
without annotators at their center to provide labeled training data. One option
is to go to another medical center for a trained classifier. Sadly, tissue
classifiers do not generalize well across centers due to voxel intensity shifts
caused by center-specific acquisition protocols. However, certain aspects of
segmentations, such as spatial smoothness, remain relatively consistent and can
be learned separately. Here we present a smoothness prior that is fit to
segmentations produced at another medical center. This informative prior is
presented to an unsupervised Bayesian model. The model clusters the voxel
intensities, such that it produces segmentations that are similarly smooth to
those of the other medical center. In addition, the unsupervised Bayesian model
is extended to a semi-supervised variant, which needs no visual interpretation

From quantum fusiliers to high-performance networks
Our objective was to design a quantum repeater capable of achieving one
million entangled pairs per second over a distance of 1000km. We failed, but
not by much. In this letter we will describe the series of developments that
permitted us to approach our goal. We will describe a mechanism that permits
the creation of entanglement between two qubits, connected by fibre, with
probability arbitrarily close to one and in constant time. This mechanism may
be extended to ensure that the entanglement has high fidelity without
compromising these properties. Finally, we describe how this may be used to
construct a quantum repeater that is capable of creating a linear quantum
network connecting two distant qubits with high fidelity. The creation rate is
shown to be a function of the maximum distance between two adjacent quantum

Literature-based discovery of diabetes- and ROS-related targets
Abstract Background Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known mediators of cellular damage in multiple diseases including diabetic complications. Despite its importance, no comprehensive database is currently available for the genes associated with ROS. Methods We present ROS- and diabetes-related targets (genes/proteins) collected from the biomedical literature through a text mining technology. A web-based literature mining tool, SciMiner, was applied to 1,154 biomedical papers indexed with diabetes and ROS by PubMed to identify relevant targets. Over-represented targets in the ROS-diabetes literature were obtained through comparisons against randomly selected literature. The expression levels of nine genes, selected from the top ranked ROS-diabetes set, were measured in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of diabetic and non-diabetic DBA/2J mice in order to evaluate the biological relevance of literature-derived targets in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy. Results SciMiner identified 1,026 ROS- and diabetes-related targets from the 1,154 biomedical papers (http://jdrf.neurology.med.umich.edu/ROSDiabetes/). Fifty-three targets were significantly over-represented in the ROS-diabetes literature compared to randomly selected literature. These over-represented targets included well-known members of the oxidative stress response including catalase, the NADPH oxidase family, and the superoxide dismutase family of proteins. Eight of the nine selected genes exhibited significant differential expression between diabetic and non-diabetic mice. For six genes, the direction of expression change in diabetes paralleled enhanced oxidative stress in the DRG. Experimental GHZ Entanglement beyond Qubits
The Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) argument provides an all-or-nothing
contradiction between quantum mechanics and local-realistic theories. In its
original formulation, GHZ investigated three and four particles entangled in
two dimensions only. Very recently, higher dimensional contradictions
especially in three dimensions and three particles have been discovered but it
has remained unclear how to produce such states. In this article we
experimentally show how to generate a three-dimensional GHZ state from
two-photon orbital-angular-momentum entanglement. The first suggestion for a
setup which generates three-dimensional GHZ entanglement from these entangled
pairs came from using the computer algorithm Melvin. The procedure employs
novel concepts significantly beyond the qubit case. Our experiment opens up the
possibility of a truly high-dimensional test of the GHZ-contradiction which,
interestingly, employs non-Hermitian operators.Comment: 6+6 pages, 8 figure
How early can myocardial iron overload occur in Beta thalassemia major?
BACKGROUND: Myocardial siderosis is the most common cause of death in patients with beta thalassemia major(TM). This study aimed at investigating the occurrence, prevalence and severity of cardiac iron overload in a young Chinese population with beta TM.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed T2* cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and serum ferritin (SF) in 201 beta TM patients. The median age was 9 years old. Patients received an average of 13 units of blood per year. The median SF level was 4536 ng/ml and 165 patients (82.1%) had SF>2500 ng/ml. Myocardial iron overload was detected in 68 patients (33.8%) and severe myocardial iron overload was detected in 26 patients (12.6%). Twenty-two patients ≤10 years old had myocardial iron overload, three of whom were only 6 years old. No myocardial iron overload was detected under the age of 6 years. Median LVEF was 64% (measured by CMR in 175 patients). Five of 6 patients with a LVEF<56% and 8 of 10 patients with cardiac disease had myocardial iron overload.
CONCLUSIONS: The TM patients under follow-up at this regional centre in China patients are younger than other reported cohorts, more poorly-chelated, and have a high burden of iron overload. Myocardial siderosis occurred in patients younger than previously reported, and was strongly associated with impaired LVEF and cardiac disease. For such poorly-chelated TM patients, our data shows that the first assessment of cardiac T2* should be performed as early as 6 years old
Mouse models for preeclampsia: disruption of redox-regulated signaling
The concept that oxidative stress contributes to the development of human preeclampsia has never been tested in genetically-defined animal models. Homozygous deletion of catechol-Omethyl transferase (Comt-/-) in pregnant mice leads to human preeclampsia-like symptoms (high
blood pressure, albuminurea and preterm birth) resulting from extensive vasculo-endothelial pathology, primarily at the utero-fetal interface where maternal cardiac output is dramatically increased during pregnancy. Comt converts estradiol to 2-methoxyestradiol 2 (2ME2) which
counters angiogenesis by depleting hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1 alpha) at late pregnancy. We propose that in wild type (Comt++) pregnant mice, 2ME2 destabilizes HIF-1 alpha by inhibiting mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). Thus, 2ME2 acts as a pro-oxidant, disrupting
redox-regulated signaling which blocks angiogenesis in wild type (WT) animals in physiological pregnancy. Further, we suggest that a lack of this inhibition under normoxic conditions in mutant animals (Comt-/-) stabilises HIF-1 alpha by inactivating prolyl hydroxlases (PHD). We predict that a lack of inhibition of MnSOD, leading to persistent accumulation of HIF-1 alpha, would trigger
inflammatory infiltration and endothelial damage in mutant animals. Critical tests of this hypothesis would be to recreate preeclampsia symptoms by inducing oxidative stress in WT animals or to ameliorate by treating mutant mice with Mn-SOD-catalase mimetics or activators of PHD
