Temperature determination from the lattice gas model
Determination of temperature from experimental data has become important in
searches for critical phenomena in heavy ion collisions. Widely used methods
are ratios of isotopes (which rely on chemical and thermal equilibrium),
population ratios of excited states etc. Using the lattice gas model we propose
a new observable: where is the charge multiplicity and
is the charge of the fragmenting system. We show that the reduced multiplicity
is a good measure of the average temperature of the fragmenting system.Comment: 11 pages, 2 ps file
The induced representations of Brauer algebra and the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of SO(n)
Induced representations of Brauer algebra from with are discussed. The induction coefficients
(IDCs) or the outer-product reduction coefficients (ORCs) of with up to a normalization factor are
derived by using the linear equation method. Weyl tableaus for the
corresponding Gel'fand basis of SO(n) are defined. The assimilation method for
obtaining CG coefficients of SO(n) in the Gel'fand basis for no modification
rule involved couplings from IDCs of Brauer algebra are proposed. Some
isoscalar factors of for the resulting irrep

Suppression of low-energy Andreev states by a supercurrent in YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta
We report a coherence-length scale phenomenon related to how the high-Tc
order parameter (OP) evolves under a directly-applied supercurrent. Scanning
tunneling spectroscopy was performed on current-carrying YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta
thin-film strips at 4.2K. At current levels well below the theoretical
depairing limit, the low-energy Andreev states are suppressed by the
supercurrent, while the gap-like structures remain unchanged. We rule out the
likelihood of various extrinsic effects, and propose instead a model based on
phase fluctuations in the d-wave BTK formalism to explain the suppression. Our
results suggest that a supercurrent could weaken the local phase coherence
while preserving the pairing amplitude. Other possible scenarios which may
cause the observed phenomenon are also discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review
Density Variations over Subparsec Scales in Diffuse Molecular Gas
We present high-resolution observations of interstellar CN, CH, CH^{+},
\ion{Ca}{1}, and \ion{Ca}{2} absorption lines toward the multiple star systems
HD206267 and HD217035. Substantial variations in CN absorption are observed
among three sight lines of HD206267, which are separated by distances of order
10,000 AU; smaller differences are seen for CH, CH^{+}, and \ion{Ca}{1}. Gas
densities for individual velocity components are inferred from a chemical
model, independent of assumptions about cloud shape. While the component
densities can differ by factors of 5.0 between adjacent sightlines, the
densities are always less than 5000 cm^{-3}. Calculations show that the derived
density contrasts are not sensitive to the temperature or reaction rates used
in the chemical model. A large difference in the CH^{+} profiles (a factor of 2
in column density) is seen in the lower density gas toward HD217035.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ
Superconducting screening on different length scales in high-quality bulk MgB2 superconductor
High quality bulk MgB2 exhibit a structure of voids and agglomeration of
crystals on different length-scales. Because of this, the superconducting
currents percolate between the voids in the ensuing structure. Magnetic
measurements reveal that the superconducting currents circulate on at least
three different length-scales, of ~1 micrometre, ~10 micrometre and whole of
the sample (~millimetre). Each of these screenings contributes to the measured
irreversible magnetic moment (Dm). The analysis of the field dependence of Dm
for samples of subsequently decreasing size showed that the critical current
obtained using the simple critical state model is erroneous. This leads to the
artefact of the sample size-dependent critical current and irreversibility
field. Our data analysis enables the separation of the contribution of each of
the screening currents to Dm. The field dependence of each of the currents
follows a stretched exponential form. The currents flowing around whole of the
sample give a dominant contribution to Dm in the intermediate fields (1T < H <
4T at 20K) and they can be used to obtain the value of Jc from critical state
model, which corresponds to the transport Jc
Patterned and Disordered Continuous Abelian Sandpile Model
We study critical properties of the continuous Abelian sandpile model with
anisotropies in toppling rules that produce ordered patterns on it. Also we
consider the continuous directed sandpile model perturbed by a weak quenched
randomness and study critical behavior of the model using perturbative
conformal field theory and show the model has a new random fixed point.Comment: 11 Pages, 6 figure
Simple Scheme for Efficient Linear Optics Quantum Gates
We describe the construction of a conditional quantum control-not (CNOT) gate
from linear optical elements following the program of Knill, Laflamme and
Milburn [Nature {\bf 409}, 46 (2001)]. We show that the basic operation of this
gate can be tested using current technology. We then simplify the scheme
significantly.Comment: Problems with PDF figures correcte
The effect of electromechanical coupling on the strain in AlGaN/GaN heterojunction field effect transistors
The strain in AlGaN/GaN heterojunction field-effect transistors (HFETs) is
examined theoretically in the context of the fully-coupled equation of state
for piezoelectric materials. Using a simple analytical model, it is shown that,
in the absence of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), the out-of-plane
strain obtained without electromechanical coupling is in error by about 30% for
an Al fraction of 0.3. This result has consequences for the calculation of
quantities that depend directly on the strain tensor. These quantities include
the eigenstates and electrostatic potential in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. It
is shown that for an HFET, the electromechanical coupling is screened by the
2DEG. Results for the electromechanical model, including the 2DEG, indicate
that the standard (decoupled) strain model is a reasonable approximation for
HFET calculataions. The analytical results are supported by a self-consistent
Schr\"odinger-Poisson calculation that includes the fully-coupled equation of
state together with the charge-balance equation.Comment: 6 figures, revte
