A crusta terrestre é a camada mais externa, menos espessa e, também, a menos densa das que constituem a Terra. As tensões geradas nos níveis superiores da estrutura terrestre podem gerar episódios sísmicos de consequências, por vezes, dramáticas. A prevenção destes fenómenos (caóticos) tem-se revelado falível, visto não existirem sinais de aviso com tempo suficiente para a evacuação das regiões onde ocorrem, ou não existirem sinais de todo. No sentido de se poder contribuir para melhorar a previsão destes fenómenos, apresenta-se aqui uma proposta de um sistema de monitorização para regiões suscetíveis a sismos, deslizamentos de terra e queda de blocos. Denominado GEOSCOUT (GEOlogical Sound Continuous OUTput), este sistema consiste num sensor piezoeléctrico ligado a um computador para a deteção acústica de vibrações no solo numa vasta gama de frequências, operando em regime contínuo. O Mosteiro e Igreja de Salzedas situam-se sobre o Granito de Penodono-Salzedas-Alvite, que neste local se apresenta muito meteorizado e fracturado. Supersymmetric Higgs pair discovery prospects at hadron colliders

We study the potential of hadron colliders in the search for the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Using analytical expressions for the relevant amplitudes, we perform a detailed signal and background analysis, working out efficient kinematical cuts for the extraction of the signal. The important role of squark loop contributions to the signal is emphasised. If the signal is sufficiently enhanced by these contributions, it could even be observable at the next run of the upgraded Tevatron collider in the near future. Increased sensitivity to cocaine-induced analgesia in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR)

This study examined the analgesic effect of cocaine in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR), which are considered a suitable model for the study of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and in Wistar (WIS) rats of both sexes using the hot-plate test. In addition, we tested whether habituation to the unheated hot-plate apparatus, that "normalizes" the basal hypoalgesic phenotype of SHR, alters the subsequent cocaine-induced analgesia (CIA) in this strain. SHR of both sexes were hypoalgesic compared to WIS rats in the hot-plate test and showed higher sensitivity to CIA. Habituation to the unheated hot-plate reduced the basal nociceptive latency of SHR, suggesting cognitive/emotional modulation of pain in this strain, but did not alter the magnitude of CIA. The present study shows increased sensitivity to CIA in SHR, which may be related to abnormalities in the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic system. Further studies using SHR strain may reveal new information on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying ADHD and its co-morbidity with drug addiction

Quais são e pra que servem os medicamentos à base de Cannabis?

The Cannabis is constituted by compounds with therapeutic properties, obsered in distinct contexts. Some Cannabis-based products are already available in the international market, and here we will highlight those already in use, which are supported by solid scientific evidence, including phytocannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids and herbal extracts. The biggest challenge is to balance the beneficial effects of Cannabis and the potential adverse effects, which may happen after chronic high-dose use. Despite the equivalente efficacy, smoked Cannabis is not well tolerated by patients without previous recreative use. On the other hand, the herbal product is preferred by recreative users that become patients. In this case, one should vaporize the plant, to avoid the harms caused by the smoke. Considering cost-effectiveness, therapeutic efficacy and quality control, the standardized herbal extracts seem to be the best option, so far available.A Cannabis possui compostos com propriedades terapêuticas observadas em diferentes contextos. Alguns produtos à base de Cannabis já estão disponíveis no mercado internacional. Aqui iremos destacar as preparações que já estão em uso, para os quais há sólidas evidências científicas incluindo canabinoides de origem natural, sintéticos e extratos vegetais. O grande desafio é encontrar um equilíbrio entre os efeitos benéficos da Cannabis e os efeitos adversos, que podem ocorrer em uso crônico e altas doses. Apesar da similaridade de eficácia com os produtos farmacêuticos, a maconha fumada não é bem aceita por pacientes que não fazem uso recreativo. O produto herbal tende a ser preferido por usuários com experiência recreacional prévia. Neste caso, deve-se optar pela vaporização, para evitar os danos causados pela fumaça. Considerando um equilíbrio entre custo, eficácia e garantia de qualidade, os extratos padronizados parecem ser a melhor opção atualmente disponível

Considerações e reflexões para uma história comparada das Américas: a respeito do artigo de Jack P. Greene

By making use of the discussion of the main thoughts forwarded by Jack Greene in his essay "Reformulating Englishness: Cultural Adaptation and Provinciality in the Construction of Corporate Identity in Colonial British America", I focus on comparative history in the Americas. In this article, I analyze the author's main arguments regarding: (a) the Atlantic colonial world and the conceptual difficulties or handicaps that still pervade national histories; (b) the dynamics of the empires - the "ethnification" processes on the way and the building of new polities in the colonies; (c) the enduring of British values deeply rooted in the provincial identities, from the 1760s to independence; and (d) the continuity of the corporatist identities in the old provinces, turned states or republican polities in the national period. The agreement with this last statement will allow us to keep viewing the American Federal State (at least until the development of the seccionalist trends of the 1840s or 1850s) still as a composite of state identities.A partir da discussão das reflexões encaminhadas por Jack Greene no ensaio, "Reformulando a identidade inglesa na América britânica colonial: adaptação cultural e experiência provincial na construção de identidades corporativas", o presente artigo desenvolve considerações para uma história comparada nas Américas. Analisa os argumentos apresentados sobre: (a) o mundo colonial atlântico e as dificuldades conceituais que predominam nas histórias nacionais; (b) a dinâmica dos impérios - os processos de "etnização" em marcha e a construção de novas polities nas colônias; (c) a manutenção de valores britânicos nas identidades provinciais, no período que vai de 1760 à independência; e (d) a continuidade das identidades corporativas nas antigas províncias, depois de tornadas estados ou polities republicanas, no período nacional. É a aceitação desta última afirmação, a que nos permitirá falar, ainda por algum tempo (ao menos até o seccionalismo dos anos de 1840s ou 1850s) do Estado Federal Americano ainda como um compósito de identidades estaduais

Experimental properties of granites

In the present work, a study of the tensile mechanical behavior of a set of twelve selected granite lithotypes is carried out. Some petrographic aspects such as grain size and presence of planar anisotropy explain the variation on the parameters that characterize the tensile behavior, like the strength and fracture energy. Other factors that influence the tensile mechanical behavior, such as weathering degree and physical properties like porosity and density, are also analyzed. Statistical correlations between the ultrasonic pulse velocity and the mechanical and physical properties are proposed
