    GPTs are GPTs: An Early Look at the Labor Market Impact Potential of Large Language Models

    We investigate the potential implications of large language models (LLMs), such as Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs), on the U.S. labor market, focusing on the increased capabilities arising from LLM-powered software compared to LLMs on their own. Using a new rubric, we assess occupations based on their alignment with LLM capabilities, integrating both human expertise and GPT-4 classifications. Our findings reveal that around 80% of the U.S. workforce could have at least 10% of their work tasks affected by the introduction of LLMs, while approximately 19% of workers may see at least 50% of their tasks impacted. We do not make predictions about the development or adoption timeline of such LLMs. The projected effects span all wage levels, with higher-income jobs potentially facing greater exposure to LLM capabilities and LLM-powered software. Significantly, these impacts are not restricted to industries with higher recent productivity growth. Our analysis suggests that, with access to an LLM, about 15% of all worker tasks in the US could be completed significantly faster at the same level of quality. When incorporating software and tooling built on top of LLMs, this share increases to between 47 and 56% of all tasks. This finding implies that LLM-powered software will have a substantial effect on scaling the economic impacts of the underlying models. We conclude that LLMs such as GPTs exhibit traits of general-purpose technologies, indicating that they could have considerable economic, social, and policy implications

    KENTUCKY PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOLS

    Kentucky public charter school law was introduced in 2017, the purpose of the new innovative schools were to close the achievement gap among the education system within the state. Charter schools are new-age schools that have a smaller class size, use differentiated instructional strategies that integrate technology to promote engagement, which in turn increases student growth and success. Advantages of charter schools within other states include differentiated environment, culture, and performance. Disadvantages of charter schools involve taking resources from traditional schools, higher resource costs, and demands. The study was approached using a basic qualitative research method. The purpose of the study was to determine the stakeholders\u27 prior knowledge of public charter schools, how the schools can be effective in promoting student success, comparing a public charter school to a public traditional school, and determining reasons why parents would send their child to a public charter school over a traditional public school. The survey questions were grouped to fit one of the four categories, prior knowledge, effectiveness, comparison, and parental reasons. By analyzing the questions within each group, an overall trend was determined. Further research is needed to determine the reasons why survey respondents oppose the formation of charter schools and oppose the funding of charter schools

    DIGE analysis of rat skeletal muscle proteins using nonionic detergent phase extraction of young adult versus aged gastrocnemius tissue

    Contractile weakness and loss of muscle mass are critical features of the aging process in mammalians. Age-related fibre wasting has a profound effect on muscle metabolism, fibre type distribution and the overall physiological integrity of the neuromuscular system. This study has used mass spectrometry-based proteomics to investigate the fate of the aging rat muscle proteome. Using nonionic detergent phase extraction, this report shows that the aged gastrocnemius muscle exhibits a generally perturbed protein expression pattern in both the detergent-extracted fraction and the aqueous protein complement from senescent muscle tissue. In the detergent-extracted fraction, the expression of ATP synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, enolase, tropomyosin and beta-actin was increased. Different isoforms of creatine kinase and prohibitin showed differential changes. In the aqueous fraction, malate dehydrogenase, sulfotransferase, triosephosphate isomerase, aldolase, cofilin-2 and lactate dehydrogenase showed increased levels. Interestingly, differential effects on dissimilar 2-D spots of the same protein species were shown for Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, albumin, annexin A4 and phosphoglycolate phosphatase. Mitochondrial Hsp60, Hsp71 and nucleoside diphosphate kinase B exhibited a reduced abundance in aged muscle. The majority of altered proteins were found to be involved in mitochondrial metabolism, glycolysis, metabolic transportation, regulatory processes, the cellular stress response, detoxification mechanisms and muscle contraction

    The relative stability of cohabiting and marital unions for children

    Children are increasingly born into cohabiting parent families, but we know little to date about the implications of this family pattern for children's lives. We examine whether children born into premarital cohabitation and first marriages experience similar rates of parental disruption, and whether marriage among cohabiting parents enhances union stability. These issues are important because past research has linked instability in family structure with lower levels of child well-being. Drawing on the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth, we find that white, black and Hispanic children born to cohabiting parents experience greater levels of instability than children born to married parents. Moreover, black and Hispanic children whose cohabiting parents marry do not experience the same levels of family stability as those born to married parents; among white children, however, the marriage of cohabiting parents raises levels of family stability to that experienced by children born in marriage.     The Sudden Death of the Nearest Quasar

    Galaxy formation is significantly modulated by energy output from supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies which grow in highly efficient luminous quasar phases. The timescale on which black holes transition into and out of such phases is, however, unknown. We present the first measurement of the shutdown timescale for an individual quasar using X-ray observations of the nearby galaxy IC 2497, which hosted a luminous quasar no more than 70,000 years ago that is still seen as a light echo in `Hanny's Voorwerp', but whose present-day radiative output is lower by at least 2 and more likely by over 4 orders of magnitude. This extremely rapid shutdown provides new insights into the physics of accretion in supermassive black holes, and may signal a transition of the accretion disk to a radiatively inefficient state.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     Impaired left atrial mechanical function after cardioversion: Relation to the duration of atrial fibrillation

    AbstractObjectives. We hypothesized that the time course of the recovery of atrial systolic function may be related to the duration of atrial fibrillation before cardioversion and sought to study noninvesively the recovery of left atrial mechanical function utilizing serial transthoracic Doppler studies.Background. Recovery of atrial mechanical function may be delayed for several weeks after successful cardioversion of atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm.Methods. After successful cardioversion, 60 patients with atrial fibrillation of brief (≤2 week, 17 patients), moderate (>2 to 6 weeks, 22 patients) or prolonged (>6 weeks, 21 patients) duration were followed up with serial transmitral pulsed Doppler echocardiography immediately (60 patients) and at 24 h (45 patients), 1 week (41 patients), 1 month (31 patients) and >3 months (30 patients) after cardioversion.Results. Atrial mechanical function is greater immediately and at 24 h and 1 week after cardioversion in patients with “brief” compared with “prolonged” atrial fibrillation. In all groups, atrial mechanical function increases over time, ultimately achieving similar levels. Full recovery of atrial mechanical function, however, is achieved within 24 h in patients with brief atrial fibrillation, within 1 week in patients with moderate-duration atrial fibrillation and within 1 month in patients with prolonged atrial fibrillation.Conclusions. Recovery of left atrial mechanical function is related to the duration of atrial fibrillation before cardioversion. These findings have important implications for assessing the early hemodynamic benefit of successful cardioversion

    Abundance and Isotopic Composition of Gases in the Martian Atmosphere: First Results from the Mars Curiosity Rover

    Repeated measurements of the composition of the Mars atmosphere from Curiosity Rover yield a (40)Ar/N2 ratio 1.7 times greater and the (40)Ar/(36)Ar ratio 1.6 times smaller than the Viking Lander values in 1976. The unexpected change in (40)Ar/N2 ratio probably results from different instrument characteristics although we cannot yet rule out some unknown atmospheric process. The new (40)Ar/(36)Ar ratio is more aligned with Martian meteoritic values. Besides Ar and N2 the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument suite on the Curiosity Rover has measured the other principal components of the atmosphere and the isotopes. The resulting volume mixing ratios are: CO2 0.960(+/- 0.007); (40)Ar 0.0193(+/- 0.0001); N2 0.0189(+/- 0.0003); O2 1.45(+/- 0.09) x 10(exp -3); and CO 5.45(+/- 3.62) x 10(exp 4); and the isotopes (40)Ar/(36)Ar 1.9(+/- 0.3) x 10(exp 3), and delta (13)C and delta (18)O from CO2 that are both several tens of per mil more positive than the terrestrial averages. Heavy isotope enrichments support the hypothesis of large atmospheric loss. Moreover, the data are consistent with values measured in Martian meteorites, providing additional strong support for a Martian origin for these rocks
