    Numerical analysis on a reversible connection for steel modular buildings

    Modular buildings are a new type of structural system composed by prefabricated modular units and assembled on site through inter-modular connections. These structures can form complete building blocks with suspended ceilings and installations, including electrical and water systems. These modular solutions can be adapted to any use like hospitals, housing schools, etc. This work focuses on the analysis of structural behavior on a reversible steel connection modelling with finite element approach. To this scope, in the paper an ideal case study is considered, characterized by steel elements. The modules are assembled by inter-module connections that allow for rapid assembly onsite, without any need of skilled workmanship reducing the welding and the use of bolts. Therefore, Midas Fea NX is used to define the contact between steel elements in detail

    Seismic behaviour of steel modular buildings: numerical analysis and comparisons between different design solutions

    Recently, there is an increasing interest to develop modular multi-storey structures that can be adapted to any use like hospitals, schools, housing, etc, characterized by versatility and speed of use in several conditions. Modular buildings may form complete building blocks with structural systems composed by several elements, such as steel frames, X-LAM timber floors and walls. These modular solutions are then completed with suspended ceilings and facilities including electrical and water systems. This work is focused on the structural behaviour of steel modular buildings with different configurations. To this scope, a case study is considered, characterized by steel elements with connections allowing a rapid on-site assemblage, without any need of skilled workmanship. A comparison among numerical results obtained with time history analyses is shown and discussed. The work presented is a first part of an on-going research addressed to propose reference solutions for modules, suitable in seismic prone areas and characterized by a low-seismic damage

    Quest'opera si propone come un'analisi approfondita dell’uso dell’ironia e della malinconia, quali elementi stilistici peculiari, in quello che può essere definito il “ciclo bretone” di Álvaro Cunqueiro (1911-1981), poliedrico autore gallego, drammaticamente diviso tra la collaborazione con il regime franchista e l’amore per la Galizia, la sua lingua e la sua cultura. Cunqueiro individua un legame culturale e paesaggistico tra la Galizia e i paesi di lingua celtica e trasporta l’universo arturiano in terra gallega, come già aveva fatto Ramón Cabanillas, celebre autore del Rexurdimento, nel suo trittico Na noite estrelecida. Questa sovrapposizione tra cultura celtica e cultura gallega si confronta però in Cunqueiro con la dimensione della vita quotidiana di paese, ottenendo allo stesso tempo una demitizzazione del mito attraverso l’ironia ed una sua quotidianizzazione attraverso la malinconia. Tale peculiare rapporto tra mito e quotidianità, ironia e malinconia, si presta a numerose interpretazioni, alcune delle quali per nulla scontate, come dimostra l'analisi del presente lavoro.Esta obra quiere ser un análisis detallado del uso de la ironía y de la melancolía como elementos estilísticos peculiares en lo que se puede definir el “ciclo bretón” de Álvaro Cunqueiro (1911-1981), proteico autor gallego, dramáticamente dividido entre la cooperación con el régimen franquista y el amor por Galicia, su lengua y su cultura. Cunqueiro identifica un nexo de cultura y de paisaje entre Galicia y los países de lengua céltica y traslada el universo artúrico en tierra gallega, como ya había hecho Ramón Cabanillas, célebre escritor del Rexurdimento, en su tríptico Na noite estrelecida. Pero en Cunqueiro esta superposición entre cultura céltica y gallega se enfrenta con la dimensión de la vida aldeana de cada día, consiguiendo a la vez una desmitificación de lo mítico a través de la ironía y su cotidianización a través de la melancolía. Esta relación especial entre mito y cotidianidad, ironía y melancolía, puede ser interpretada de distintas maneras y no siempre se puede dar por descontada, como prueba el análisis que se ofrece en el presente trabajo

    A combined PHREEQC-2/parallel fracture model for the simulation of laminar/non-laminar flow and contaminant transport with reactions

    A combination of a parallel fracture model with the PHREEQC-2 geochemical model was developed to simulate sequential flow and chemical transport with reactions in fractured media where both laminar and turbulent flows occur. The integration of non-laminar flow resistances in one model produced relevant effects on water flow velocities, thus improving model prediction capabilities on contaminant transport. The proposed conceptual model consists of 3D rock-blocks, separated by horizontal bedding plane fractures with variable apertures. Particle tracking solved the transport equations for conservative compounds and provided input for PHREEQC-2. For each cluster of contaminant pathways, PHREEQC-2 determined the concentration for mass-transfer, sorption/desorption, ion exchange, mineral dissolution/precipitation and biodegradation, under kinetically controlled reactive processes of equilibrated chemical species. Field tests have been performed for the code verification. As an example, the combined model has been applied to a contaminated fractured aquifer of southern Italy in order to simulate the phenol transport. The code correctly fitted the field available data and also predicted a possible rapid depletion of phenols as a result of an increased biodegradation rate induced by a simulated artificial injection of nitrates, upgradient to the sources.
