Post-mortem toxicology: A pilot study to evaluate the use of a Bayesian network to assess the likelihood of fatality

The challenge of interpreting post-mortem drug concentrations is well documented and relies on appropriate sample collection, knowledge of case circumstances as well as reference to published tables of data, whilst taking into account the known issues of post-mortem drug redistribution and tolerance. Existing published data has evolved from simple data tables to those now including sample origin and single to poly drug use, but additional information tends to be specific to those reported in individual case studies. We have developed a Bayesian network framework to assign a likelihood of fatality based on the contribution of drug concentrations whilst taking into account the pathological findings. This expert system has been tested against casework within the coronial jurisdiction of Sunderland, UK. We demonstrate in this pilot study that the Bayesian network can be used to proffer a degree of confidence in how deaths may be reported in cases when drugs are implicated. It has also highlighted the potential for deaths to be reported according to the pathological states at post-mortem when drugs have a significant contribution that may have an impact on mortality statistics. The Bayesian network could be used as complementary approach to assist in the interpretation of post-mortem drug concentrations

Men in Nursing: Implications for the Profession and Broader Workforce Trends

    Get PDF
Typically, nursing has been considered a gendered profession dominated by women. As traditionally blue-collar, male-dominated occupations such as assembly-line work have declined, the percentage of men in the nursing profession has increased to 12%. This is not a recent phenomenon;a significant percentage of men served as nurses up through the 1800’s. In this analysis of men serving in the nursing workforce, we begin with a historical review and then discuss implications for the nursing profession, e.g., recruitment, education, practice, retention, and culture, as well as implications for the broader labor market, e.g., compensation trends by industry and gende

Student to Scholar: Learning Experiences of International Students

    Get PDF
The author discusses the learning experiences and processes of selected international graduate students within a Canadian university as they progressed from student to scholar. Inspired by social learning theorists Lave and Wenger’s (1991) notion of apprentice to masters in situated learning and communities of practice, the student to scholar framework sheds new light on the phenomenon of being an international graduate student. The arguments within the paper counter traditional views of learning as occurring solely through classroom engagements and offers that international graduate students learn and achieve “scholar” status through situated practice, professor mentoring and triple learning. Data were captured through observations and in-depth phenomenological and semistructured interviews

Exploring Section 136 of the Mental Health Act (1983/2007) from a psychological perspective

This thesis brings together a series of work undertaken in partial fulfilment of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Research: Literature review; empirical paper; and public dissemination document providing an accessible summary of this volume. The literature review draws together the extant literature on what is known about what happens when the police detain people experiencing mental health crises. It offers a systematic search of relevant bibliographic databases, and findings are discussed within the context of the limitations of the review and the implications for future practice and research. In building on the work of this review, the empirical paper goes on to explore how police officers understand and experience the use of Section 136 of the Mental Health Act (1983/2007). This study employed interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore ten officers’ (from the English Midlands) experiences of this aspect of their work

Rainbow copies of C4 in edge-colored hypercubes

For positive integers k and d such that 4 \u3c= k \u3c d and k not equal 5, we determine the maximum number of rainbow colored copies of C-4 in a k-edge-coloring of the d-dimensional hypercube Q(d). Interestingly, the k-edge-colorings of Q(d) yielding the maximum number of rainbow copies of C-4 also have the property that every copy of C-4 which is not rainbow is monochromatic
