Broiler Production in Punjab — An Economic Analysis
The cost and return analysis of different sizes of broiler farms in the Punjab state has been carried out based on the primary data collected from 140 broiler farmers for the period March 2008 to February 2009 in three districts, viz. Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Muktsar. The study has shown that the total fixed investments per bird have been highest on small farms, followed by medium and large farms. The total variable cost per bird has been reported highest on small farms, followed by medium and large farms. The total cost of meat production per bird has been found highest on small broiler farms, followed by medium and large farms. The net returns per bird over the variable costs have been recorded highest on large farms and economies of scale prevail on these farms. The meat-feed price ratio and benefit-cost ratio have been found to increase with increase in farm-size of broiler farms, which indicates better utilization of inputs on large farms. On the basis of net present value, benefit-cost ratio and internal rate of return, investment in broiler farming has been found profitable in all farm-sizes, it being most profitable on large farms, followed by medium and small farms. The small broiler farms have been observed highly sensitive to increase in costs and decrease in net returns. Year-round and rotational freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii and paddy farming: soil quality, production and economics
A study was carried out at five upazillas (Dumuria, Fakirhat, Pirojpur sadar, Gopalgonj sadar and Kalia) of five southern districts of Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Gopalgonj and Narail to understand the comparative production performance and any effect on soil quality in case of year-round golda (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), alternate prawn-paddy and year-round paddy farming. A direct interview of 55 farmers was taken, using pretested questionnaire, and soil samples were taken from selected farms before and after each crop. Among the five upazillas, farmers in Gopalgonj sadar and Kalia are not practicing year-round golda. Rotational golda-paddy farming has been recorded to result in maximum profit, with the highest of Tk. 310,912/ha/year in 2003 at Dumuria. Only paddy farming is less profitable than other two cropping patterns, irrespective of study sites. The nutrient status of soil in rotational golda and paddy farming has been found improved, compared to that of only golda or paddy farming

Consequences of unsafe abortion in India- a case report
Unsafe abortion represents a preventable yet major cause for maternal mortality in India. A majority of these abortions are performed confidentially. Complications occur in a large portion of these cases and ultimately require tertiary care. However, patients and their relatives often fail to disclose the abortion despite the critical state of the patients. This scenario creates considerable confusion for diagnosis and treatment and can lead to further complications. This case report of complications associated with an unsafe abortion in India highlights the need for clinicians to consider the possibility of an undisclosed abortion when treating any morbid woman of reproductive age

Transverse Ising Model: Markovian evolution of classical and quantum correlations under decoherence
The transverse Ising Model (TIM) in one dimension is the simplest model which
exhibits a quantum phase transition (QPT). Quantities related to quantum
information theoretic measures like entanglement, quantum discord (QD) and
fidelity are known to provide signatures of QPTs. The issue is less well
explored when the quantum system is subjected to decoherence due to its
interaction, represented by a quantum channel, with an environment. In this
paper we study the dynamics of the mutual information , the
classical correlations and the quantum correlations
, as measured by the QD, in a two-qubit state the density matrix
of which is the reduced density matrix obtained from the ground state of the
TIM in 1d. The time evolution brought about by system-environment interactions
is assumed to be Markovian in nature and the quantum channels considered are
amplitude damping, bit-flip, phase-flip and bit-phase-flip. Each quantum
channel is shown to be distinguished by a specific type of dynamics. In the
case of the phase-flip channel, there is a finite time interval in which the
quantum correlations are larger in magnitude than the classical correlations.
For this channel as well as the bit-phase-flip channel, appropriate quantities
associated with the dynamics of the correlations can be derived which signal

A Honeycomb Proportional Counter for Photon Multiplicity Measurement in the ALICE Experiment
A honeycomb detector consisting of a matrix of 96 closely packed hexagonal
cells, each working as a proportional counter with a wire readout, was
fabricated and tested at the CERN PS. The cell depth and the radial dimensions
of the cell were small, in the range of 5-10 mm. The appropriate cell design
was arrived at using GARFIELD simulations. Two geometries are described
illustrating the effect of field shaping. The charged particle detection
efficiency and the preshower characteristics have been studied using pion and
electron beams. Average charged particle detection efficiency was found to be
98%, which is almost uniform within the cell volume and also within the array.
The preshower data show that the transverse size of the shower is in close
agreement with the results of simulations for a range of energies and converter

Spermatogenic capacity in fertile men with elevated exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls
Background
Endocrine disrupting industrial chemicals, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are suspected to adversely affect male reproductive functions.
Objectives
The Faroe Islands community exhibits an unusually wide range of exposures to dietary contaminants, and in this setting we examined the possible association between PCB exposure and semen quality and reproductive hormones in fertile Faroese men.
Methods
Participants in this cross-sectional study include 266 proven fertile men residing in the Faroe Islands. PCB levels and hormone profiles were measured in serum samples taken at the clinical examination that included semen quality parameters.
Results
A significant positive association was seen between serum-PCB and the testosterone/estradiol ratio (p=0.04). In the unadjusted analyses, elevated PCB exposure was associated with increased serum concentrations of SHBG (p=0.01) and FSH (p=0.05). We found no association between the serum PCB concentration and the semen quality variables.
Conclusion
In this population of highly exposed fertile men, the current serum-PCB concentration was associated with higher androgen/estrogen ratio. Further studies are needed to establish the findings and further document PCB-associated hormonal effects, any time windows of increased susceptibility, and the role of PCB in sub-fecundity
The STAR Photon Multiplicity Detector
Details concerning the design, fabrication and performance of STAR Photon
Multiplicity Detector (PMD) are presented. The PMD will cover the forward
region, within the pseudorapidity range 2.3--3.5, behind the forward time
projection chamber. It will measure the spatial distribution of photons in

Markovian evolution of classical and quantum correlations in transverse-field XY model
The transverse-field XY model in one dimension is a well-known spin model for
which the ground state properties and excitation spectrum are known exactly.
The model has an interesting phase diagram describing quantum phase transitions
(QPTs) belonging to two different universality classes. These are the
transverse-field Ising model and the XX model universality classes with both
the models being special cases of the transverse-field XY model. In recent
years, quantities related to quantum information theoretic measures like
entanglement, quantum discord (QD) and fidelity have been shown to provide
signatures of QPTs. Another interesting issue is that of decoherence to which a
quantum system is subjected due to its interaction, represented by a quantum
channel, with an environment. In this paper, we determine the dynamics of
different types of correlations present in a quantum system, namely, the mutual
information, the classical correlations and the quantum correlations, as
measured by the quantum discord, in a two-qubit state. The density matrix of
this state is given by the nearest-neighbour reduced density matrix obtained
from the ground state of the transverse-field XY model in 1d. We assume
Markovian dynamics for the time-evolution due to system-environment
interactions. The quantum channels considered include the bit-flip,
bit-phase-flip and phase-flip channels. Two different types of dynamics are
identified for the channels in one of which the quantum correlations are
greater in magnitude than the classical correlations in a finite time interval.
The origins of the different types of dynamics are further explained. For the
different channels, appropriate quantities associated with the dynamics of the
correlations are identified which provide signatures of QPTs. We also report
