Aviation Data Mining
We explore different methods of data mining in the field of aviation and their effectiveness. The field of aviation is always searching for new ways to improve safety. However, due to the large amounts of aviation data collected daily, parsing through it all by hand would be impossible. Because of this, problems are often found by investigating accidents. With the relatively new field of data mining we are able to parse through an otherwise unmanageable amount of data to find patterns and anomalies that indicate potential incidents before they happen. The data mining methods outlined in this paper include Multiple Kernel Learning algorithms, Hidden Markov Models, Hidden Semi-Markov Models, and Natural Language Processing
Cosmology with a TeV mass GUT Higgs
The most natural way to break the GUT gauge symmetry is with a Higgs field
whose vacuum expectation value is of order 10^{16}\,\mbox{GeV} but whose mass
is of order to 10^3\,\mbox{GeV}. This can lead to a cosmological
history radically different from what is usually assumed to have occurred
between the standard inflationary and nucleosynthesis epochs, which may solve
the gravitino and Polonyi/moduli problems in a natural way.Comment: 4 pages, revte
Finite size and temperature effects in the AF Heisenberg model
The low temperature and large volume effects in the d=2+1 antiferromagnetic
quantum Heisenberg model are dominated by magnon excitations. The leading and
next-to-leading corrections are fully controlled by three physical constants,
the spin stiffness, the spin wave velocity and the staggered magnetization.
Among others, the free energy, the ground state energy, the low lying
excitations, staggered magnetization, staggered and uniform susceptibilities
are studied here. The special limits of very low temperature and infinite
volume are considered also.Comment: 44 pages, LATEX, no figure
Gravitino constraints on models of neutrino masses and leptogenesis
In the supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, neutrino masses and
leptogenesis requires existence of new particles. We point out that if these
particles with lepton number violating interactions have standard model gauge
interactions, then they may not be created after reheating because of the
gravitino problem. This will rule out all existing models of neutrino masses
and leptogenesis, except the one with right-handed singlet neutrinos.Comment: 12 pages latex file with one postscript figur
Dark Matter Spikes and Annihilation Radiation from the Galactic Center
The annihilation rate of weakly interacting cold dark matter particles at the
galactic center could be greatly enhanced by the growth of a density spike
around the central supermassive black hole (SBH). Here we discuss the effects
of hierarchical mergers on the central spike. Mergers between halos containing
SBHs lead to the formation of SBH binaries which transfer energy to the dark
matter particles, lowering their density. The predicted flux of annihiliation
photons from the galactic center is several orders of magnitude smaller than in
models that ignore the effects of SBHs and mergers. Measurement of the
annihilation radiation could in principle be used to constrain the merger
history of the galaxy.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures, uses revtex4.st
The essential role of senior care pharmacists in antimicrobial stewardship: An updated position statement on behalf of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists
Senior care pharmacists are well-positioned to lead and drive antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) initiatives, not only through audit and data collection, but also through communication, collaboration, and cooperation with prescribers and nurses to influence prescribing behaviors. Senior care pharmacists are in a unique position to take a leadership role within the interprofessional team to achieve AMS goals. They should engage with the interprofessional team to promote the judicious and appropriate use of antimicrobials at their practice sites. This position statement is an update of the 2017 version by the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection and Prevention Control Committee and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP)
