    open2noThe year 2014 has marked the tercentenary from the death of Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714), universally credited as the founder of Occupational Health (5, 9, 10, 11). Indeed, the renowned physician died on November 5th 1714 in Padua, where he had been appointed as Professor of Practical Medicine at the local prestigious University from the year 1700. Many experimental studies have been done to understand the best characteristics of cells, materials and laboratory methods for safe clinical applications. The aim of this study was to compare the ability of 2 different human demineralized bone matrices (DBMs), the one enriched and the other not enriched with hyaluronic acid, to stimulate in vitro the proliferation and the osteogenic differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) seeded onto an osteoconductive scaffold. Materials and Methods: ADSCs were isolated, by enzymatic digestion, from abdominal adipose tissue of 5 patients undergoing cosmetic lipoaspiration surgery. ADSCs were then seeded onto a 3D scaffold in the presence of the two different osteoinductive matrices of human demineralized bone and evaluated for proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. The safety of the methods was verified using array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (array-CGH). Results: ADSCs were able to differentiate in osteogenic sense. Both DBMs showed the ability to induce osteogenic differentiation of the cells. Conclusion: array-CGH showed no changes at genome level, thus confirming the safety of materials and method

    Coronal Plane: Cristin Millett

    Coronal Plane is the culmination of Millett’s research on the anatomical theater at the University of Padua built in 1594, the oldest surviving anatomy theater in the world. The installation allows viewers to walk into and through a space that evokes physical, emotional, and psychological reactions similar to those experienced in the historic anatomy theater in Padua by audiences of the past. Illustrations depicted on red “windows” in Millett’s work are appropriated from De Formato Foetu, a text written by Girolamo Fabrizi d’Acquapendente (Hieronymus Fabricius), the Chair of Anatomy at the University of Padua. It was under his leadership that the anatomy theater of 1594 was built. Millett’s allusions to Catholic confessionals and kneeling benches in the installation invite the viewer to question the contradictory stance between surgeries performed for medical education and dissections completed in order to disperse sacred remains for widespread worship. Particular references to sexuality and sexual differences are also central to Millett’s investigation of historical medical practices and philosophies.     Bivariate Lagrange interpolation at the Padua points: the ideal theory approach

    Padua points is a family of points on the square [−1,1]2[-1,1]^2 given by explicit formulas that admits unique Lagrange interpolation by bivariate polynomials. The interpolation polynomials and cubature formulas based on the Padua points are studied from an ideal theoretic point of view, which leads to the discovery of a compact formula for the interpolation polynomials. The LpL^p convergence of the interpolation polynomials is also studied.Comment: 11 page

    On certain multivariate Vandermonde determinants whose variables separate

    We prove that for almost square tensor product grids and certain sets of bivariate polynomials the Vandermonde determinant can be factored into a product of univariate Vandermonde determinants. This result generalizes the conjecture [Lemma 1, L. Bos et al. (2009), Dolomites Research Notes on Approximation, 2:1-15].     Study to regenerate the degraded neighborhood of San Carlo on the northern outskirt of Padua, Italy

    The San Carlo neighborhood with the church of San Carlo at its center is a degraded area in the northern outskirts of Padua, a city located near Venice in the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy. Once marked by a distinctive identity, this part of the outskirts of Padua has gradually lost its social and functional character. The idea of restoring this decaying district has long been the subject of discussion by the local authorities. The neighborhood of San Carlo is one of the subjects recently investigated by students studying the \u2018Architectural and Urban Composition 2' course on the Master\u2019s Degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Padua. Their ideas include a green piazza park, a community center and hall, a library, study rooms for students, additional parking, open space for the weekly market

The proposed approach develops around the systematic application of advanced machine learning techniques and, in particular, unsupervised deep learning and probabilistic generative models for system-wide learning, modeling, optimization, and data representation. Moreover, in COBANETS, we propose to combine this learning architecture with the emerging network virtualization paradigms, which make it possible to actuate automatic optimization and reconfiguration strategies at the system level, thus fully unleashing the potential of the learning approach. Compared with the past and current research efforts in this area, the technical approach outlined in this paper is deeply interdisciplinary and more comprehensive, calling for the synergic combination of expertise of computer scientists, communications and networking engineers, and cognitive scientists, with the ultimate aim of breaking new ground through a profound rethinking of how the modern understanding of cognition can be used in the management and optimization of telecommunication network

    A few remarks on "On certain Vandermonde determinants whose variables separate"

    In the recent paper \u201cOn certain Vandermonde determinants whose variables separate\u201d [Linear Algebra and its Applications 449 (2014) pp. 17\u201327], there was established a factorized formula for some bivariate Vandermonde determinants (associated to almost square grids) whose basis functions are formed by Hadamard products of some univariate polynomials. That formula was crucial for proving a conjecture on the Vandermonde determinant associated to Padua-like points. In this note we show that the same formula holds when those polynomials are replaced by arbitrary functions and we extend this formula to general rectangular grids. We also show that the Vandermonde determinants associated to Padua-like points are nonvanishing
