Re/Forming and Influencing Public Policy, Law and Religion: Missing From the Table
Taking a leap to be at a table from which Mexican American women have always been absent, and are still not invited, takes tremendous courage, knowing that much personal sacrifice will be required. This Essay addresses why Mexican American women have been absent from the tables of influence in the worlds of public policy, religion, and law, and how they can establish their presence as part of an anti-subordination agenda
Women Law Deans, Gender Sidelining, and Presumptions of Incompetence
Discussions of presumptions of incompetence and gender sidelining all address challenges that women, especially women of color, face in leadership roles. This Article explores these topics in the context of law deans.
This Article starts with updated data on the number of women law deans, including women of color, and demonstrates increased numbers of both women and women of color in deanships. It then shifts to plausible explanations for this growth: some optimistic and some more skeptical. It may be no coincidence that as the job became less desirable, women were appointed in greater numbers.
Next, this Article provides narrative descriptions of women’s experiences in leadership, including experiences unique to women of color, such as common stories of presumptions of incompetence, and gender sidelining. This Part also dissects women deans’ experiences with presumptions of incompetence and gender sidelining, and explores relationship and family patterns revealed by survey responses. It also suggests potential trends and truths.
The next Part of this Article develops ideas on how to continue increasing the number of women law deans and provide them support for success
Gendered Shades of Property: A Status Check on Gender, Race & Property
This article explores the relationship between gender, race and property.Women in the United States continue to be economically disadvantaged, and women of color are even more disadvantaged. This article will open with a review of laws, past and present, which have shaped women\u27s rights to own, manage and transfer property. It will then provide a status check of where women, including women of color, stand in the United States relative to the rest of the population vis-a-vis income and other indicators of economic well-being. The article will then discuss why economic inequality persists, trotting out the usual reasons of discrimination and women\u27s individual choice, and a number of less frequently discussed reasons. It will also question the validity of some typical justifications for the economic gap. The article closes by suggesting possibilities for decreasing the economic gap between men and women in the future
Student Associations and Entrepreneurial Intentions
Drawing on Ajzen’s (1991) theory of planned behavior and entrepreneurship
education theory, this article examines the role of student associations in developing
students’ entrepreneurial intentions at early educational stages. This study addresses the
scarcity of research on extracurricular activities and on early university experiences of
entrepreneurship education and their influence on entrepreneurial intentions.
Based on survey data collected from 237 first-year undergraduate business school
students and a PLS analysis, we provide empirical evidence on the value of student
associations in increasing the entrepreneurial intentions of first-year students through
their impact on entrepreneurial attitudes, which are instrumental in the formation of
entrepreneurial intentions. The results have important implications both for educational
practice and for public and private organizations interested in promoting
entrepreneurship. They support the value of including practical training in education
programs
The Black-White Paradigm’s Continuing Erasure of Latinas: See Women Law Deans of Color
The Black-white paradigm persists with unintended consequences. For example, there have been only six Latina law deans to date with only four presently serving. This Article provides data about women law deans of color, the dearth of Latina law deans, and explanations for the data. It focuses on the enduring Black-white paradigm, as well as other external and internal forces. This Article suggests how to increase the number of Latina law deans and emphasizes why it matters
