    Workers' Choice on Pension Schemes: an Assessment of the Italian TFR Reform Through Theory and Simulations

    In this paper we aim at providing a theoretical framework to model workers’ choice problem of switching between different pension schemes. This choice problem is common in several countries that have reformed their social security system in the last decades. Although with some specific features, such process is currently affecting private sector employees in Italy, since the reform of the TFR mechanism in 2007. This reform basically allows workers to choose between a scheme directly managed by the firms and an external defined contribution scheme. In their decision workers not only have to weight out the different pros and cons that different schemes offer but they also have to consider the effect that their choice exerts on the financial structure of the firm they work in. Once we have formalized this decision problem, we carry out some simulations in order to replicate the Italian data and to shed some light on the outcomes of the Italian reform

    The CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) space experiment for the direct measurement of high energy electrons in cosmic rays

    The CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) is a Japanese-led international space mission by JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency) in Collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and NASA. The apparatus was launched to the International Space Station on 19 August 2015. Its main objective is to explore the region above 1 TeV with precise direct measurements of the electron+positron and nuclei spectra. The instrument consists of a charge detection device composed of two layers of plastic scintillators, a finely-segmented sampling calorimeter with scintillating fibers (3 radiation lengths) and a homogeneous calorimeter made of PWO scintillating bars (27 radiation lengths). In parallel with the calorimeter another instrument, the CALET Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (CGBM), operates as a gamma-ray burst monitor using two different kinds of scintillators to detect photons from 7 keV to 20 MeV. In this work a brief review of the electron analysis will be discussed focusing on the electron/proton discrimination power estimated with different Monte Carlo simulations. Some published results about calibration and search for electromagnetic counterparts of the LIGO GW 151226 gravitational wave event will be presented too

    A Scalable Telemetry Framework for Zero Touch Optical Network Management

    The interest about Zero Touch Network and Service Management (ZSM) is rapidly emerging. As defined by ETSI, the ZSM architecture is based on a closed-loop/feedback control of the network and the services. Such closed-loop control can be based on the Boyd's Observe Orient Decide and Act (OODA) loop that matches some specific management functions such as Data Collection, Data Analytics, Intelligence, Orchestration and Control. An efficient implementation of such control loop allows the network to timely adapt to changes and maintain the required quality of service.Many solutions for collecting network parameters (i.e., implementing ZSM data collection) are proposed that fall under the broad umbrella of network telemetry. An example is the Google gRPC, that represented one of the first solutions to provide a framework for data collection. Since then, the number of available frameworks is proliferating. In this paper we propose the utilisation of Apache Kafka as a framework for collecting optical network parameters. Then, the paper goes beyond that by proposing and showing how Apache Kafka can be effective for supporting data exchange and management of whole ZSM closed-loop.Experimental evaluation results show that, even when a large number of data are collected, the solution is scalable and the time to disseminate the parameter values is short. Indeed, the difference between the reception time and the generation time of data is, on average, 40-50ms when about four thousand messages are generated

    Frozen elephant trunk: Assets and liabilities of a challenging technique

    The development of the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique for a simplified treatment of complex lesions of the thoracic aorta originated as an evolution of the classic elephant trunk technique, described for the first time by Borst et al .[1] in 1983. Novel technologies and standardization of the surgical approach produced a progressive improvement of early and late outcomes. Most of the time and for specific indications, FET procedure allows physicians to treat lesions involving extensive portions of the thoracic aorta in one single step. Spinal cord injury remains one of the main complications of this procedure, even though spinal protection strategies have led to better results. We hereby report our opinions and recommendations based on our experience started in 2007

    Apoptosis and proliferation in thyroid carcinoma: correlation with bcl-2 and p53 protein expression.

    The aim of this study was to determine the apoptotic cell death in 92 thyroid carcinomas of different histotypes (42 papillary, PTC; 12 poorly differentiated, PDC: 21 undifferentiated, UC; and 17 medullary, MC) by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end labelling (TUNEL). Apoptotic index (Al, evaluated as a percentage of TUNEL-positive cells of neoplastic cells) was calculated in each tumour. The AI was very low in all subtypes of thyroid carcinoma, ranging from a median value of 0.2 in PTC to 1.4 in UC. The proliferative activity was determined by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibody, MIB-1. The percentage of proliferating cells was significantly different among the histotypes, increasing with tumour aggressiveness (from the mean value of 3.1 for PTC to 5.6 for PDC and 51.8 for UC). In addition, the ratio between proliferative activity and apoptosis was significantly higher in UC than in the other histotypes. The expression of bcl-2 and p53 protein (important in the modulation of cell death) was correlated (bcl-2, inverse correlation, r2 = 0.1, P = 0.04; p53, direct correlation, r2 = 0.11, P = 0.02) with apoptotic index in PTC
