    Incorporation of Radio Frequency Identification Tag in Dentures to Facilitate Recognition and Forensic Human Identification

    Forensic identification using odontology is based on the comparison of ante-mortem and post mortem dental records. The insertion of a radio frequency identification (RFId) tag into dentures could be used as an aid to identify decomposed bodies, by storing personal identification data in a small transponder that can be radio-transmitted to a reader connected to a computer. A small passive, 12 x 2,1 mm, read-only RFId-tag was incorporated into the manufacture of three trial complete upper dentures and tested for a signal. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the feasibility of manufacturing such a dental prosthesis, the technical protocols for its implantation in the denture resin and its working principles. Future research and tests are required in order to verify human compatibility of the tagged denture and also to evaluate any potential deterioration in strength when subjected to high temperatures, or for damage resulting from everyday wear and tear. It should also be able to withstand the extreme conditions resulting from major accidents or mass disasters and procedures used to perform a forensic identification

    Postmortem computed tomography age assessment of juvenile dentition:comparison against traditional OPT assessment

    Age estimation is one of the primary demographic features used in the identification of juvenile remains. Determining the accuracy and repeatability of age estimations based on postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) data compared with those using conventional orthopantomography (OPT) images is important to validate the use of PMCT as a single imaging technique in forensic and disaster victim identification (DVI). In this study, 19 juvenile mandibles and maxilla of known age underwent both OPT and PMCT. Three raters then estimated dental age using the resulting images and 3D reconstructions. This assessment showed excellent agreement between the age estimations using the two techniques for all three observers. PMCT also offers a greater range of measurements for both the dentition and the whole human skeleton using a single image acquisition and therefore has the potential to improve both the speed and accuracy of age estimation

    Age estimation based on Willems method versus new country-specific method in South African black children

    AIM : The aims of our study were to develop new maturity scores for dental age estimation in South African black children according to the Willems method, which was developed based on Belgian Caucasian (BC) reference data (Willems et al. J Forensic Sci 46(4):893–895, 2001), and to compare age prediction performance of both methods. SUBJECTS AND METHODS : A total of 986 panoramic radiographs of healthy South African black (SAB) children (493 males and 493 females) in the age range of 4.14 to 14.99 years (mean age 10.06 years) were selected for obtaining developmental staging scores (according to Demirjian et al. Hum Biol 45(2):211–227, 1973). Willems BC methodology was applied to develop new country-specific maturity scores (Willems SAB). Age prediction performance of Willems BC and Willems SAB was compared. RESULTS : On average, Willems BC renders acceptable results with an overestimation of chronological age of 0.06 years (SD 0.88 years) in SAB children. Compared to Willems SAB, the overall mean absolute error was slightly higher with Willems BC (0.62 and 0.68 years, respectively), but this was not significant in males. Also, the root mean squared error was marginally higher in Willems BC. CONCLUSION : The new age prediction method developed in South African black children was found to be better compared to Willems BC, although the difference seems to be small and clinically not relevant, especially in males.http://link.springer.com/journal/4142019-03-01hj2017Oral Pathology and Oral Biolog
