Evaluation of graffiti countermeasures on highways

Graffiti is an ever-growing problem that taints the environment. It costs over {dollar}12 billion per year to remove graffiti in the United States. Highway structures are accessible to the public at all hours of the day. So, there is much likelihood that these structures would be tagged. Bridges, sound walls, retaining walls and traffic signs are the major highway structures maintained by state DOT that are affected by graffiti. The present research is to evaluate the graffiti countermeasures for the highway structures in Nevada. In the evaluation process, an inventory data of graffiti cases on the major highway structures in Las Vegas and Reno is collected. The data is analyzed for finding the impact of the preventive measures, accessibility and surroundings on the amount of graffiti. In the next step, a survey is conducted to the maintenance divisions of all state DOTs for their current practice of removing and preventing graffiti. The survey results are analyzed for identifying some countermeasures from different states. Several meetings are conducted with various anti-graffiti agencies in Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles to identify the countermeasures of graffiti for highway structures. Finally, a spectrum of countermeasures is collected from the results of literature review, inventory data analysis, survey and the meetings. A cost-benefit analysis of these countermeasures is conducted for finding the effectiveness of the countermeasures. The most effective countermeasures are recommended to Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT)

Objective: The aim was to find out the cleistanthin B sensitive cancer cell type among a panel of cancer cell lines. Methods: The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of cleistanthin B against different cancer cells were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)- 2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. The cell death caused by cleistanthin B in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells was evaluated by acridine orange and ethidium bromide (AO-EB) dual staining. Using short exposure, we generated the 5-fluorouracil</AQ1> and oxaliplatin (5-FU+Ox) surviving cells from the parental HT-29 CRC cell lines. These surviving CRC cells were further treated with cleistanthin B either alone or combined with 5-FU. Annexin V apoptosis assay was used to determine the combined effect of cleistanthin B with 5-FU against HT-29 cells. Results: The IC50 values of cleistanthin B were found to be 3.6±0.55, 5.2±0.51, 8.6±1.02, 10.5±1.50, 18.3±3.71, 25.8±5.50, and 26.7±5.90 μg/mL against HT-29, SW-480, HCT-15, HELA, MDA-MB-231, A549, and DU145, respectively. The IC50 value of cleistanthin B against L132 cells was >100 μg/mL. The cleistanthin B treated HT-29, SW-480, and HCT-15 CRC cells showed apoptotic changes such as chromatin condensation, nuclear fragmentation, and formation of apoptotic bodies in the AO-EB dual staining method. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that cleistanthin B enhances the 5-FU induced apoptosis against 5-FU+Ox surviving HT-29 CRC cells. Conclusion: Cleistanthin B is relatively more potent against CRC cells than other cancer cells, and it induces apoptosis mediated cell death in CRC cells. Cleistanthin B enhances the anticancer activity of 5-FU against HT-29 CRC cells

Docker &It’s Containerization: Popular Evolving Technology and rise of Microservices

Traditional software development processes usually result in relatively large teams working on a single, monolithic deployment artifact. It is evident that the application is going to grow in size with an increase in the number of services offered. This might become overwhelming for developers to build and maintain the application codebase and there is a problem that sometimes the application works on the developer system and the same does not work on the testing environment so for this, we tried to work with virtual machines before but unless they have a very powerful and expensive infrastructure.VM supports hardware virtualization. That feels like it is a physical machine in which you can boot any OS. In hypervisor-based virtualization, the virtual machine is not a complete operating system instance but its partial instance of the operating system and hypervisor allows multiple operating systems to share a single hardware host. In this virtualization, every virtual machine (VM) needs a complete operating-system installation including a kernel which makes it massive. The proposed system highlights the role of Container-based virtualization and Docker in shaping the future of Microservice Architecture. Docker is an open-source platform that can be used for building, distributing, and running applications in a portable, lightweight runtime and packaging tool, known as Docker Engine. It also provides Docker Hub, which is a cloud service for sharing applications. Costs can be reduced by replacing the traditional virtual machines with docker containers. Microservices and containers are the modern way of building large, independent, and manageable applications. The adoption of containers will continue to grow and the majority of Microservice applications will be built on the containers in the future

Background: The main aim of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of empagliflozin 10 mg once daily over 12 weeks as add-on therapy to metformin plus sulfonylurea in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with inadequate glycemic control. Methods: It is a prospective, observational, study conducted in patients of Sri Badhrakali Diabetic Center located in Warangal, Telangana, India. The efficacy of empagliflozin 10 mg was assessed by measuring the change in the glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), body mass index (BMI) at the baseline and 12 weeks, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) at the baseline and after 24 hours of treatment. Results: In the present study, the addition of empagliflozin to metformin and Sulfonylurea therapy for 12 weeks provided 0.87 % reduction in HbA1c. The mean changes of FPG from baseline to 12-week is -26 mg/dl. At 24 hours empagliflozin significantly reduced blood pressure with mean changes of SBP and DBP -4.147 and -1.526 mmHg respectively. The mean changes in BMI from baseline to week 12 is -0.638 kg/m2.Conclusions: Empagliflozin 10 mg provided ancillary reduction in HbA1c outside of metformin and sulfonylurea. Controlled body weight, HbA1c, blood pressure decreases diabetes progression, decreased risk of diabetic complications and reduced risk for cardiovascular disorders

Image Coding based Orthogonal Polynomials Multiresolution Analysis with Joint Probability Context Modeling and Modified Golomb-Rice Entropy Coding

The work proposes, a JPEG2000 like compression technique which is  based on multiresolution analysis of orthogonal polynomials transformation (OPT)  coefficients has been presented with bit modeling for Golomb-Rice entropy coding. Initially, the image under analysis is divided into blocks and OPT is applied to each divided blocks. Then, transformed coefficients are represented as sub bands like structure (multiresolution) and scalar quantization is carried out to the transformed coefficients to reduce the precision. The quantized coefficients are then bit modelled in the bit plane using a joint probability statistical model, and significant bits in the bit plane are chosen. On the selected relevant bits, a geometrically distributed set of context is modelled for further encoding with modified Golomb-Rice encoding to provide compressed data. The decompression procedure is just the reverse of compression procedure. Experiments and analysis are carried out to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed compression scheme in terms of compression ratio and Peak-Signal-to Noise Ratio (PSNR), and the results are encouragin

Protein Trap Lines of Drosophila to demonstrate Spatio-Temporal Localization of Proteins in an Undergraduate Lab

The objective of this teaching note is to generate a laboratory exercise, which allows students to get a hands-on experience of a cell biology technique. The short duration of the laboratory classes is the biggest challenge with the development of a cell biology lab for an undergraduate curriculum. Therefore, it is necessary to design a laboratory exercise that enables the students to carry out cell biological assays in the desired time. This laboratory exercise focuses on tracking protein expression levels along a spatial (space) and temporal (time) axis in developing Drosophila melanogaster organ primordium. Here we use the protein trap model developed in Drosophila to demonstrate the sub-cellular localization of proteins. The protein trap transgenic flies have green fluorescent protein (GFP) reporter tags to the full-length endogenous proteins that allow observation of their cellular as well as sub-cellular distribution. Since the life cycle of Drosophila is short, it is easy to rear them in the lab and also use them as an excellent model for an undergraduate lab curriculum. The goal of this exercise is to train undergraduate students and teach them the use of one such powerful tool which enables the localization of proteins

    Ultra-wideband Impulse-based Radar Signals for Through-the-wall Imaging

Ultra-wideband (UWB) is the promising technology for localization of the objects behind the walls. Recent terrorist activities and law-enforcement situations underscore the need for effective through-wall detection. The approval of UWB technology made by federal communications commission (FCC) in 2002 makes the researchers to have a look on this technology. UWB radar signals has extremely large frequency spectrum and since low frequencies has more penetration capabilities through dielectric materials it is best suitable for through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI). Signal processing in TWRI has a greater impact in getting the information of the scanned area. This paper uses impulse signals in TWRI, examines the factors impacting in TWRI and obtains the two dimensional information of the scanned scene. Electromagnetic simulation software is used to generate the room like structure, and to obtain the raw radar data.Defence Science Journal, 2012, 62(1), pp.187-192, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.62.84
