Comparison of work fluctuation relations
We compare two predictions regarding the microscopic fluctuations of a system
that is driven away from equilibrium: one due to Crooks [J. Stat. Phys. 90,
1481 (1998)] which has gained recent attention in the context of nonequilibrium
work and fluctuation theorems, and an earlier, analogous result obtained by
Bochkov and Kuzovlev [Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 72(1), 238247 (1977)]. Both results
quantify irreversible behavior by comparing probabilities of observing
particular microscopic trajectories during thermodynamic processes related by
time-reversal, and both are expressed in terms of the work performed when
driving the system away from equilibrium. By deriving these two predictions
within a single, Hamiltonian framework, we clarify the precise relationship
between them, and discuss how the different definitions of work used by the two
sets of authors gives rise to different physical interpretations. We then
obtain a extended fluctuation relation that contains both the Crooks and the

Biosurfactants produced by Bacillus subtilis A1 and Pseudomonas stutzeri NA3 reduce longevity and fecundity of Anopheles stephensi and show high toxicity against young instars
Anopheles stephensi acts as vector of Plasmodium parasites, which are responsible for malaria in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. Currently, malaria management is a big challenge due to the presence of insecticide-resistant strains as well as to the development of Plasmodium species highly resistant to major antimalarial drugs. Therefore, the present study focused on biosurfactant produced by two bacteria Bacillus subtilis A1 and Pseudomonas stutzeri NA3, evaluating them for insecticidal applications against malaria mosquitoes. The produced biosurfactants were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which confirmed that biosurfactants had a lipopeptidic nature. Both biosurfactants were tested against larvae and pupae of A. stephensi. LC50 values were 3.58 (larva I), 4.92 (II), 5.73 (III), 7.10 (IV), and 7.99 (pupae) and 2.61 (I), 3.68 (II), 4.48 (III), 5.55 (IV), and 6.99 (pupa) for biosurfactants produced by B. subtilis A1 and P. stutzeri NA3, respectively. Treatments with bacterial surfactants led to various physiological changes including longer pupal duration, shorter adult oviposition period, and reduced longevity and fecundity. To the best of our knowledge, there are really limited reports on the mosquitocidal and physiological effects due to biosurfactant produced by bacterial strains. Overall, the toxic activity of these biosurfactant on all young instars of A. stephensi, as well as their major impact on adult longevity and fecundity, allows their further consideration for the development of insecticides in the fight against malaria mosquitoes

Relative Susceptibility of Whiteflies to Danital® + Orthone® Over a 5-year Period
As part of a program to assess differences in susceptibility to insecticides among regional populations of Bemisia tabaci, insecticide resistance monitoring was carried out at the Maricopa Agricultural Center from fall, 1995 through 1999. Monitoring efforts were concentrated on Danitol®+Orthene® following reports of control problems and documentation of resistance to this mixture in 1995. We were interested in the longer-term dynamics of resistance in light of radically altered treatment regimens beginning with the use of IGRs in 1996. Although the frequency of susceptible individuals to Danitol+Orthene tended to increase in the later years, highly resistant individuals were still present 5 years after the resistance episode of 1995. Whitefly adults collected from various insecticide treatment plots other than Danitol+Orthene were generally uniform in their responses from the time of initial whitefly infestation until defoliation. However, a dramatic shift in susceptibility occurred following a single application of Danitol+Orthene in 1997 and 1999. The increased frequency of resistant individuals following treatment suggests that any large scale return to the use of Danitol+Orthene could rapidly select for proportionally higher numbers of resistant whiteflies and perhaps reduced control in cotton fields
