    Semi-automatic tumor boundary detection in MR image sequences

    The authors present a semi-automatic approach for the detection of tumor boundary in MR image sequences. An initial slice with an obvious tumor is selected from the image sequence. The tumor is roughly segmented using fuzzy c-means algorithm and its boundary can be further refined by region and contour deformation. For the rest of the slices, the initial plan applied for each slice is extracted from the resulting boundary of the previous slice. The tumor boundary is located using region and contour deformation. Performance of our approach is evaluated on the MR image sequence. Comparisons with manual tracing show the accuracy and effectiveness of our approach.published_or_final_versio

    In this paper, we present a new approach for the extraction of brain tumor boundary in a series of 2D MR image slices. The shape and position of tumor in one slice could be assumed to be similar to that in its neighboring slices. Using this correlation between consecutive images, the initial plan applied for each slice is extracted from the resulting boundary of the previous slice. The tumor boundary is located using region and contour deformation, which tolerates a rough initial plan. Therefore, only one coarse manual initial plan is required for the whole series of MR image slices. Performance of our approach is evaluated on MR image set.     Constraints on the Universal Varying Yukawa Couplings: from SM-like to Fermiophobic

    Varying the Standard Model (SM) fermion Yukawa couplings universally by a generic positive scale factor (FYuF_{Yu}), we study the phenomenological fit to the current available experimental results for the Higgs boson search at hadron colliders. We point out that the Higgs production cross section and its decay branching ratio to ฮณฮณ\gamma\gamma can be varied oppositely by FYuF_{Yu} to make their product almost invariant. Thus, our scenario and the SM Higgs are indistinguishable in the inclusive Hโ†’ฮณฮณH\to \gamma\gamma channel. The current measurements on direct Yukawa coupling strength in the Hโ†’bbห‰/ฯ„ฯ„H\to b\bar{b}/\tau\tau channel are not precise enough to fix the scale factor FYuF_{Yu}. The most promising is the vector-boson-fusion channel in which the CMS has already observed possible suppression effect on the Yukawa couplings. Further more, the global ฯ‡2\chi^2 fit of the experimental data can get the optimal value by introducing a suppression factor FYuโˆผ1/2F_{Yu}\sim1/2 on the SM Yukawa couplings.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, update analysis is supplemente

    Surface plasmon-enhanced electroluminescence in organic light-emitting diodes incorporating Au nanoparticles

    Surface plasmon-enhanced electroluminescence (EL) in an organic light-emitting diode is demonstrated by incorporating the synthesized Au nanoparticles (NPs) in the hole injection layer of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonic acid. An increase of โˆผ25% in the EL intensity and efficiency are achieved for devices with Au NPs, whereas the spectral and electrical properties remain almost identical to the control device. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals that the EL enhancement is ascribed to the increase in spontaneous emission rate due to the plasmonic near-field effect induced by Au NPs. ยฉ 2012 American Institute of Physics

    Polymorphisms of toll-like receptors 2 and 9 and severity and prognosis of bacterial meningitis in Chinese children

    Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a crucial role in innate immunity, protecting the host from bacterial pathogens. We investigated whether bacterial meningitis (BM) in children was associated with gene polymorphisms in TLR2 (rs3804099), TLR3 (rs3775291 and rs3775290) and TLR9 (rs352139 and rs352140). Blood samples were taken from 218 child patients with confirmed BM and 330 healthy adult controls (HC) and polymorphisms of these genes were analyzed by PCR-based sequencing. For TLR2 rs3804099, frequencies of the minor allele C were markedly higher in patients with severe BM (defined as CSF glucose concentration <= 1.5 mmol/L and seizures) than those without (43.5% and 40.1% vs. 30.1% and 29.1%, p = 0.008 and p = 0.016, respectively). For TLR9 rs352139, patients who carried genotype AA and minor allele A developed seizures less often than those without (OR = 0.289, p = 0.003 and OR = 0.568, p = 0.004, respectively). However, for TLR9 rs352140, patients who carried genotype TT and minor allele T developed seizures more often than those without (OR = 3.385, p = 0.004 and OR = 1.767, p = 0.004, respectively). Our finding suggested that genetic variations in TLR2 and TLR9 are associated with severity and prognosis of bacterial meningitis in Chinese children. However, the results should be interpreted with caution since the number of subjects included was limited

    Probing for Invisible Higgs Decays with Global Fits

    We demonstrate by performing a global fit on Higgs signal strength data that large invisible branching ratios Br_{inv} for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs particle are currently consistent with the experimental hints of a scalar resonance at the mass scale m_h ~ 124 GeV. For this mass scale, we find Br_{inv} < 0.64 (95 % CL) from a global fit to individual channel signal strengths supplied by ATLAS, CMS and the Tevatron collaborations. Novel tests that can be used to improve the prospects of experimentally discovering the existence of a Br_{inv} with future data are proposed. These tests are based on the combination of all visible channel Higgs signal strengths, and allow us to examine the required reduction in experimental and theoretical errors in this data that would allow a more significantly bounded invisible branching ratio to be experimentally supported. We examine in some detail how our conclusions and method are affected when a scalar resonance at this mass scale has couplings deviating from the SM ones.Comment: 32pp, 15 figures v2: JHEP version, ref added & comment added after Eq.

    Multiple Neural Oscillators and Muscle Feedback Are Required for the Intestinal Fed State Motor Program

    After a meal, the gastrointestinal tract exhibits a set of behaviours known as the fed state. A major feature of the fed state is a little understood motor pattern known as segmentation, which is essential for digestion and nutrient absorption. Segmentation manifests as rhythmic local constrictions that do not propagate along the intestine. In guinea-pig jejunum in vitro segmentation constrictions occur in short bursts together with other motor patterns in episodes of activity lasting 40โ€“60 s and separated by quiescent episodes lasting 40โ€“200 s. This activity is induced by luminal nutrients and abolished by blocking activity in the enteric nervous system (ENS). We investigated the enteric circuits that regulate segmentation focusing on a central feature of the ENS: a recurrent excitatory network of intrinsic sensory neurons (ISNs) which are characterized by prolonged after-hyperpolarizing potentials (AHPs) following their action potentials. We first examined the effects of depressing AHPs with blockers of the underlying channels (TRAM-34 and clotrimazole) on motor patterns induced in guinea-pig jejunum, in vitro, by luminal decanoic acid. Contractile episode durations increased markedly, but the frequency and number of constrictions within segmenting bursts and quiescent period durations were unaffected. We used these observations to develop a computational model of activity in ISNs, excitatory and inhibitory motor neurons and the muscle. The model predicted that: i) feedback to ISNs from contractions in the circular muscle is required to produce alternating activity and quiescence with the right durations; ii) transmission from ISNs to excitatory motor neurons is via fast excitatory synaptic potentials (EPSPs) and to inhibitory motor neurons via slow EPSPs. We conclude that two rhythm generators regulate segmentation: one drives contractions within segmentation bursts, the other the occurrence of bursts. The latter depends on AHPs in ISNs and feedback to these neurons from contraction of the circular muscle

    Groundwater Nitrogen Pollution and Assessment of Its Health Risks: A Case Study of a Typical Village in Rural-Urban Continuum, China

    Protecting groundwater from nitrogen contamination is an important public-health concern and a major national environmental issue in China. In this study, we monitored water quality in 29 wells from 2009 to 2010 in a village in Shanghai city, whick belong to typical rural-urban continuum in China. The total N and NO3-N exhibited seasonal changes, and there were large fluctuations in NH4-N in residential areas, but without significant seasonal patterns. NO2-N in the water was not stable, but was present at high levels. Total N and NO3-N were significantly lower in residential areas than in agricultural areas. The groundwater quality in most wells belonged to Class III and IV in the Chinese water standard, which defines water that is unsuitable for human consumption. Our health risk assessments showed that NO3-N posed the greatest carcinogenic risk, with risk values ranging from 19ร—10โˆ’6 to 80ร—10โˆ’6, which accounted for more than 90% of the total risk in the study area
