Particle acceleration mechanisms in supermassive black hole jets, such as shock acceleration, magnetic reconnection, and turbulence, are expected to have observable signatures in the multiwavelength polarization properties of blazars. The recent launch of the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) enables us, for the first time, to use polarization in the X-ray band (2-8 keV) to probe the properties of the jet synchrotron emission in high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac objects (HSPs). We report the discovery of X-ray linear polarization (degree pi(x) = 15% +/- 2% and electric vector position angle psi (x) = 35 degrees +/- 4 degrees) from the jet of the HSP Mrk 421 in an average X-ray flux state. At the same time, the degree of polarization at optical, infrared, and millimeter wavelengths was found to be lower by at least a factor of 3. During the IXPE pointing, the X-ray flux of the source increased by a factor of 2.2, while the polarization behavior was consistent with no variability. The higher level of pi(x) compared to longer wavelengths, and the absence of significant polarization variability, suggest a shock is the most likely X-ray emission site in the jet of Mrk 421 during the observation. The multiwavelength polarization properties are consistent with an energy-stratified electron population, where the particles emitting at longer wavelengths are located farther from the acceleration site, where they experience a more disordered magnetic field

Microtron Irradiation Induced Tuning of Band Gap and Photoresponse of Al-ZnO Thin Films Synthesized by mSILAR

Al-doped polycrystalline nano ZnO (Al-ZnO) thin films with different doping concentrations were successfully prepared by the microwave-assisted successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (mSILAR) technique. The structural analysis along with the orientation of the prepared films was examined by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns. The deposited film is polycrystalline and the (002) orientation enhanced upon doping. Additional investigations were carried out to study the effect of electron beam irradiation (e−-irradiation) on the band gap and photoconductivity of both irradiated and unirradiated samples. Both the Al doping and e−-irradiation led to the enhancement of the photoconductivity of prepared materials. This property enables us to tune the properties of materials for various applications by controlling dopant concentrations and e−-irradiation. The dependence of photocurrent on e−-irradiation of Al-ZnO thin films was not reported previously. Therefore, Al-doped polycrystalline nano-ZnO thin film is a promising material for band gap engineering and for the development of solar cells

Cortical F-actin stabilization generates apical–lateral patterns of junctional contractility that integrate cells into epithelia

E-cadherin cell-cell junctions couple the contractile cortices of epithelial cells together, generating tension within junctions that influences tissue organization. Although junctional tension is commonly studied at the apical zonula adherens, we now report that E-cadherin adhesions induce the contractile actomyosin cortex throughout the apical lateral axis of junctions. However, cells establish distinct regions of contractile activity even within individual contacts, producing high tension at the zonula adherens but substantially lower tension elsewhere. We demonstrate that N-WASP (also known as WASL) enhances apical junctional tension by stabilizing local F-actin networks, which otherwise undergo stress-induced turnover. Further, we find that cells are extruded from monolayers when this pattern of intra-junctional contractility is disturbed, either when N-WASP redistributes into lateral junctions in H-Ras(V12)-expressing cells or on mosaic redistribution of active N-WASP itself. We propose that local control of actin filament stability regulates the landscape of intra-junctional contractility to determine whether or not cells integrate into epithelial populations
