    A derivation of Maxwell’s equations using the Heaviside notation

    Maxwell's four differential equations describing electromagnetism are among the most famous equations in science. Feynman said that they provide four of the seven fundamental laws of classical physics. In this paper, we derive Maxwell's equations using a well-established approach for deriving time-dependent differential equations from static laws. The derivation uses the standard Heaviside notation. It assumes conservation of charge and that Coulomb's law of electrostatics and Ampere's law of magnetostatics are both correct as a function of time when they are limited to describing a local system. It is analogous to deriving the differential equation of motion for sound, assuming conservation of mass, Newton's second law of motion and that Hooke's static law of elasticity holds for a system in local equilibrium. This work demonstrates that it is the conservation of charge that couples time-varying E-fields and B-fields and that Faraday's Law can be derived without any relativistic assumptions about Lorentz invariance. It also widens the choice of axioms, or starting points, for understanding electromagnetism

    Graphene Bilayer Field-Effect Phototransistor for Terahertz and Infrared Detection

    A graphene bilayer phototransistor (GBL-PT) is proposed and analyzed. The GBL-PT under consideration has the structure of a field-effect transistor with a GBL as the channel and the back and top gates. The positive bias of the back gate results in the formation of conducting source and drain sections in the channel, while the negatively biased top gate provides the potential barrier which is controlled by the charge of the photogenerated holes. The features of the GBL-PT operation are associated with the variations of both the potential distribution and the energy gap in different sections of the channel when the gate voltages and the charge in the barrier section change. Using the developed GBL-PT device model, the spectral characteristics, dark current, responsivity and detectivity are calculated as functions of the applied voltages, energy of incident photons, intensity of electron and hole scattering, and geometrical parameters. It is shown that the GBL-PT spectral characteristics are voltage tuned. The GBL-PT performance as photodetector in the terahertz and infrared photodetectors can markedly exceed the performance of other photodetectors.Comment: 7 Pages, 7 figure

    Use of complementary and alternative medicines by a sample of Turkish women for infertility enhancement: a descriptive study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Infertility patients are a vulnerable group that often seeks a non-medical solution for their failure to conceive. World-wide, women use CAM for productive health, but only a limited number of studies report on CAM use to enhance fertility. Little is known about traditional and religious forms of therapies that are used in relation to conventional medicine in Turkey. We investigated the prevalence and types of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) used by infertile Turkish women for fertility enhancement.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A face-to-face questionnaire inquiring demographic information and types of CAM used for fertility enhancement were completed by hundred infertility patients admitted to a primary care family planning centre in Van, Turkey between January and July 2009.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The vast majority of infertile women had used CAM at least once for infertility. CAM use included religious interventions, herbal products and recommendations of traditional "hodja's" (faith healers). Of these women, 87.8% were abused in the last 12 months, 36.6% felt not being supported by her partner and 80.5% had never spoken with a physician about CAM.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Infertile Turkish women use complementary medicine frequently for fertility enhancement and are in need of information about CAM. Religious and traditional therapies are used as an adjunct to, rather than a substitute for, conventional medical therapy. Physicians need to approach fertility patients with sensitivity and should be able to council their patients about CAM accordingly.</p

    Is complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) cost-effective? a systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Out-of-pocket expenditures of over $34 billion per year in the US are an apparent testament to a widely held belief that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies have benefits that outweigh their costs. However, regardless of public opinion, there is often little more than anecdotal evidence on the health and economic implications of CAM therapies. The objectives of this study are to present an overview of economic evaluation and to expand upon a previous review to examine the current scope and quality of CAM economic evaluations. METHODS: The data sources used were Medline, AMED, Alt-HealthWatch, and the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Citation Index; January 1999 to October 2004. Papers that reported original data on specific CAM therapies from any form of standard economic analysis were included. Full economic evaluations were subjected to two types of quality review. The first was a 35-item checklist for reporting quality, and the second was a set of four criteria for study quality (randomization, prospective collection of economic data, comparison to usual care, and no blinding). RESULTS: A total of 56 economic evaluations (39 full evaluations) of CAM were found covering a range of therapies applied to a variety of conditions. The reporting quality of the full evaluations was poor for certain items, but was comparable to the quality found by systematic reviews of economic evaluations in conventional medicine. Regarding study quality, 14 (36%) studies were found to meet all four criteria. These exemplary studies indicate CAM therapies that may be considered cost-effective compared to usual care for various conditions: acupuncture for migraine, manual therapy for neck pain, spa therapy for Parkinson's, self-administered stress management for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, pre- and post-operative oral nutritional supplementation for lower gastrointestinal tract surgery, biofeedback for patients with "functional" disorders (eg, irritable bowel syndrome), and guided imagery, relaxation therapy, and potassium-rich diet for cardiac patients. CONCLUSION: Whereas the number and quality of economic evaluations of CAM have increased in recent years and more CAM therapies have been shown to be of good value, the majority of CAM therapies still remain to be evaluated

    Electronics and Information Engineering: a new approach to modelling 1890 - 1950

    Towards the end of the nineteenth century electrical and telegraph engineers turned their attention both to modelling the phenomena they observed in the new technologies and to designing systems that would behave in the desired way. Although the mathematical techniques they used were well established, such engineers developed novel ways of developing and employing them. Oliver Heaviside, for example, as well as simplifying and re-casting Maxwell’s equations in the vector form that subsequently became universal, developed his operational calculus (effectively equivalent to Laplace transforms) to model the behaviour of electrical circuits. By the early decades of the twentieth century the whole array of Fourier techniques was being developed, including convolution in the time domain as an equivalent to multiplication in the frequency domain. Feedback circuits presented a particular challenge, as they were known to become easily unstable. Researchers at Bell Labs studied this problem in detail, resulting in the Nyquist stability criterion of 1932 and Bode’s monumental work on circuit design some years later. Karl Küpfmüller in Germany carried out similar, but rather less well-known work. Some of the most impressive, and still under-estimated, techniques involved graphical tools for design. The Nichols Chart removed the need for difficult computation of closed-loop behaviour based on open-loop modelling or experimental recording, while the Smith Chart provided a similar resource for engineers concerned with transmission lines. These charts now form an integral part of computer tools – not, now, to replace calculation, but because they are still unsurpassed as ways of presenting information to the skilled engineer
