Customer perception of switch-feel in luxury sports utility vehicles
Successful new product introduction requires that product characteristics relate to the customer on functional, emotional, aesthetic and cultural levels. As a part of research into automotive human machine interfaces (HMI), this paper describes holistic customer research carried out to investigate how the haptics of switches in luxury sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are perceived by customers. The application of these techniques, including an initial proposal for objective specifications, is addressed within the broader new product introduction context, and benefits described.
One-hundred and one customers of SUVs assessed the feel of automotive push switches, completing the tasks both in, and out of vehicles to investigate the effect of context. Using the semantic differential technique, hedonic testing, and content analysis of customersâ verbatim comments, a holistic picture has been built up of what influences the haptic experience. It was found that customers were able to partially discriminate differences in switch-feel, alongside considerations of visual appearance, image, and usability. Three factors named âAffectiveâ, âRobustness and Precisionâ, and âSilkinessâ explained 61% of the variance in a principle components analysis. Correlations of the factors with acceptance scores were 0.505, 0.371, and 0.168, respectively
Third Party Reforms In Corrections: A Qualitative Analysis Of Interest Groupsâ Effectiveness At Reducing Entropy Using Litigation
Interest groups have been prevalent in American society for decades. Much of interest groupsâ (IGs) influence has been examined by their effect on decision-making. IGsâ ability to affect policy choices is undeniable both legislatively and judicially. Analyses of judicial decision-making generally focus on the use of amicus curiae briefs (ACBs) by IGs. While most analyses of IGsâ influence have been conducted using quantitative methods, few have assessed IGsâ effect on decision-making qualitatively. Although the literature on IGs and decision-making is well established among political scientists, these concepts have been discussed much less among criminologists. The current analysis fill this void by conducting a qualitative content analysis of ACBs submitted by IGs working to reform corrections through USSC litigation. By doing so, this analysis more exhaustively identifies IGs involved in corrections reform and their stances on various issues. Additionally, this approach provides a more in depth understanding of how and why ACBs have been an effective strategy for IGs
Constrained Dynamics of Universally Coupled Massive Spin 2-spin 0 Gravities
The 2-parameter family of massive variants of Einstein's gravity (on a
Minkowski background) found by Ogievetsky and Polubarinov by excluding lower
spins can also be derived using universal coupling. A Dirac-Bergmann
constrained dynamics analysis seems not to have been presented for these
theories, the Freund-Maheshwari-Schonberg special case, or any other massive
gravity beyond the linear level treated by Marzban, Whiting and van Dam. Here
the Dirac-Bergmann apparatus is applied to these theories. A few remarks are
made on the question of positive energy. Being bimetric, massive gravities have
a causality puzzle, but it appears soluble by the introduction and judicious

Composite Flexible Blanket Insulation
Composite flexible multilayer insulation systems (MLI) were evaluated for thermal performance and compared with the currently used fibrous silica (baseline) insulation system. The systems described are multilayer insulations consisting of alternating layers of metal foil and scrim ceramic cloth or vacuum metallized polymeric films quilted together using ceramic thread. A silicon carbide thread for use in the quilting and the method of making it are also described. These systems are useful in providing lightweight insulation for a variety of uses, particularly on the surface of aerospace vehicles subject to very high temperatures during flight

Nominal Equational Logic is an extension of ordinary equational logic with assertions about the freshness of names. Cross-cultural differences in automotive HMI design : a comparative study between UK and Indian usersâ design preferences
This paper presents a research study examining the importance of understanding automotive usersâ cultural values and their individual preferences for human machine interface (HMI) design features and functionalities. The goal of this research was to explore how a cultural model can be applied in the development of automotive HMI solutions and future design localization. To meet this goal, it was necessary to (a) identify the characteristics of the Hofstede cultural model, (b) identify the differences in cultural values using the model, and (c) identify regional differences in HMI design needs and preferences across drivers from India and the UK. The results highlighted differences in expectations for HMI systems between the groups, suggesting an influence of culture on the perception of vehicle user interface technology. This led to the conclusion that an understanding of cultural biases can influence design localization and support development strategies. In addition, two main categories of further research have arisen as a result of this project. The first category focuses on identifying methodologies to establish relationships between culture and regional driversâ HMI design preferences. The second category comprises new research questions on tools and processes to deal with cultural influences
Fresh-Register Automata
What is a basic automata-theoretic model of computation with names and fresh-name generation? We introduce Fresh-Register Automata (FRA), a new class of automata which operate on an infinite alphabet of names and use a finite number of registers to store fresh names, and to compare incoming names with previously stored ones. These finite machines extend Kaminski and Francezâs Finite-Memory Automata by being able to recognise globally fresh inputs, that is, names fresh in the whole current run. We exam-ine the expressivity of FRAâs both from the aspect of accepted languages and of bisimulation equivalence. We establish primary properties and connections between automata of this kind, and an-swer key decidability questions. As a demonstrating example, we express the theory of the pi-calculus in FRAâs and characterise bisimulation equivalence by an appropriate, and decidable in the finitary case, notion in these automata
