High-temperature molten salt thermal energy storage systems
The results of comparative screening studies of candidate molten carbonate salts as phase change materials (PCM) for advanced solar thermal energy storage applications at 540 to 870 C (1004 to 1600 F) and steam Rankine electric generation at 400 to 540 C (752 to 1004 F) are presented. Alkali carbonates are attractive as latent heat storage materials because of their relatively high storage capacity and thermal conductivity, low corrosivity, moderate cost, and safe and simple handling requirements. Salts were tested in 0.1 kWhr lab scale modules and evaluated on the basis of discharge heat flux, solidification temperature range, thermal cycling stability, and compatibility with containment materials. The feasibility of using a distributed network of high conductivity material to increase the heat flux through the layer of solidified salt was evaluated. The thermal performance of an 8 kWhr thermal energy storage (TES) module containing LiKCO3 remained very stable throughout 5650 hours and 130 charge/discharge cycles at 480 to 535 C (896 to 995 F). A TES utilization concept of an electrical generation peaking subsystem composed of a multistage condensing steam turbine and a TES subsystem with a separate power conversion loop was defined. Conceptual designs for a 100 MW sub e TES peaking system providing steam at 316 C, 427 C, and 454 C (600 F, 800 F, and 850 F) at 3.79 million Pa (550 psia) were developed and evaluated. Dynamical quantum phase transition of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice
We study dynamics of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate where the two
components are coupled via an optical lattice. In particular, we focus on the
dynamics as one drives the system through a critical point of a first order
phase transition characterized by a jump in the internal populations. Solving
the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we analyze; breakdown of
adiabaticity, impact of non-linear atom-atom scattering, and the role of a
harmonic trapping potential. Our findings demonstrate that the phase transition
is resilient to both contact interaction between atoms and external trapping
confinement.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

Spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a tilted optical lattice
Bloch oscillations appear for a particle in a weakly tilted periodic
potential. The intrinsic spin Hall effect is an outcome of a spin-orbit
coupling. We demonstrate that both these phenomena can be realized
simultaneously in a gas of weakly interacting ultracold atoms exposed to a
tilted optical lattice and to a set of spatially dependent light fields
inducing an effective spin-orbit coupling. It is found that both the spin Hall
as well as the Bloch oscillation effects may coexist, showing, however, a
strong correlation between the two. These correlations are manifested as a
transverse spin current oscillating in-phase with the Bloch oscillations.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Statistical properties of acoustic emission signals from metal cutting processes
Acoustic Emission (AE) data from single point turning machining are analysed
in this paper in order to gain a greater insight of the signal statistical
properties for Tool Condition Monitoring (TCM) applications. A statistical
analysis of the time series data amplitude and root mean square (RMS) value at
various tool wear levels are performed, nding that ageing features can
be revealed in all cases from the observed experimental histograms. In
particular, AE data amplitudes are shown to be distributed with a power-law
behaviour above a cross-over value. An analytic model for the RMS values
probability density function (pdf) is obtained resorting to the Jaynes' maximum
entropy principle (MEp); novel technique of constraining the modelling function
under few fractional moments, instead of a greater amount of ordinary moments,
leads to well-tailored functions for experimental histograms.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Metamitron replacing carbaryl in post bloom thinning of apple trees.
Carbaryl or the mixture of carbaryl with NAA (naphthalene acetic acid) or BA (benzyladenine) are the post-bloom chemical thinners most widely used in apple thinning in Brazil. The marketing restriction of carbaryl demands new options of apple post-bloom thinners, requiring the evaluation of others compounds for this purpose. Metamitron is one of the substances that may be used in chemical thinning of apples. Metamitron was evaluated at two concentrations, alone or in mixture with BA, in "MaxiGala", "Fuji Suprema" and "Fred Hough" apple cultivars. Applications of metamitron at 384 mg L-1 and at 768 mg L-1 in a mixture with BA, ranging from 40 mg L-1 to 80 mg L-1, sprayed on fruits with diameter ranging from 5 to 25 mm were compared ith the standard treatment and hand thinning. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4-6 repetitions of a single plant. The variables analyzed were: fruit set (%); percentage of floral clusters with 1, 2, 3, 4 or more fruits; fruit yield (kg); verage fruit fresh mass (g) and percentage of dropped fruit after thinning. Metamitron alone or in combination with BA reduced production per plant and significantly increased the fresh weight of fruits in all cultivars tested. Metamitron at 800 mg L-1 resulted in excessive fruit thinning, especially in ?MaxiGala? cultivar. Metamitron or metamitron + BA have potential to compose the program of chemical thinning of apple trees to replace carbaryl. Index terms: Plant growth regulators, concentration, fruit set, fruit production.
