    The mechanical behaviour of an ultrafine grained Ti-47Al-2Cr (at%) alloy in tension and compression and at different temperatures

    A bulk ultrafine grained (UFG) Ti-47Al-2Cr (at%) alloy has been produced using a powder metallurgy process that combines high energy mechanical milling (HEMM) of a mixture of Ti, Al and Cr powders to produce a Ti/Al/Cr composite powder and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of the composite powder compact. The purpose of the present study is to determine the mechanical behaviour of the alloy in tension and compression at room temperature (RT) and elevated temperatures, and also to compare the compression behaviour of the material with its tensile behaviour. It has been found that due to the residual pores, lack of full level interparticle bonding and high oxygen content (0.87wt%) in the consolidated samples, the UFG TiAl based alloy has a very low room temperature tensile fracture strength of 100 MPa and shows no tensile ductility. However these microstructural defects and high oxygen content have much less significant effect on the room temperature compressive mechanical properties, and the alloy shows a high compressive yield strength of 1410 MPa, and some ductility (plastic strain to fracture 4%). At elevated temperatures of 800oC and above, the alloy shows high tensile and compressive ductility as demonstrated by 75% tensile elongation to fracture and no cracking in upset forging with a height reduction of 50% at 900oC. The yield strength of the alloy at 900oC is 55 MPa in tension and 33 MPa in compression, both of which are lower than those of coarse grained TiAl based alloys with similar compositions at 900oC. This is due to a higher creep rate of the UFG alloy caused by the small grains. The good formability of the UFG TiAl based alloy as reflected by the lower critical temperature above which the alloy becomes highly formable indicates that the material can be used as a suitable precursor for secondary thermomechanical processing and super-plastic forming

    Added Value of Computed Tomography Virtual Intravascular Endoscopy in the Evaluation of Coronary Arteries with Stents or Plaques

    Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a widely used imaging modality for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) but is limited by a high false positive rate when evaluating coronary arteries with stents and heavy calcifications. Virtual intravascular endoscopy (VIE) images generated from CCTA can be used to qualitatively assess the vascular lumen and might be helpful for overcoming this challenge. In this study, one hundred subjects with coronary stents underwent both CCTA and invasive coronary angiography (ICA). A total of 902 vessel segments were analyzed using CCTA and VIE. The vessel segments were first analyzed on CCTA alone. Then, using VIE, the segments were classified qualitatively as either negative or positive for in-stent restenosis (ISR) or CAD. These results were compared, using ICA as the reference, to determine the added diagnostic value of VIE. Of the 902 analyzed vessel segments, CCTA/VIE had sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value (shown in %) of 93.9/90.2, 96.2/98.2, 96.0/97.7, 70.0/83.1, and 99.4/99.0, respectively, in diagnosing ISR or CAD, with significantly improved specificity (p = 0.025), accuracy (p = 0.046), and positive predictive value (p = 0.047).     Clogmia albipunctatus (Duckhouse) is a cosmopolitan fly belonging to the family Psychodidae and is one of the medically important insects associated with urban environments ( Smith and Thomas 1979 ). Psychodid larvae can cause myiasis in humans through infestation of healthy or traumatized tissues ( Hall and Smith 1993 ). Human myiasis can be presented in various forms with cutaneous myiasis the most common form ( Tu et al. 2007 ). Other infestation sites include nasal, aural, pulmonary, ophthalmic cavities, body cavities, and the gastrointestinal and urogenital systems ( Tu et al. 2007 , El-Badry et al. 2014 ). Intestinal myiasis may result from accidental ingestion of larvae. Subsequently, this form of myiasis presents symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and distention, loss of appetite, weight loss, and episodic diarrhea ( Ramana 2012 ). This is the second reported case of human intestinal myiasis in Malaysia caused by larvae of C. albipunctatus .     The linear trirhodium compound, Rh-3(dpa)(4)Cl-2 (1), and its one-electron oxidation product, [Rh-3(dpa)(4)Cl-2]BF4 (2), have been synthesized and studied extensively. The magnetic measurement for compound 1 shows that it possesses one unpaired electron that is assigned to occupy the sigma(nb) orbital ((2)A(2)) by DFT calculations. Upon oxidation, a beta-spin electron of 1 is removed, that causes compound 2 to exhibit a triplet ground state. DFT calculations indicate that the two unpaired electrons of 2 occupy sigma(nb) and delta* orbitals (B-3(1)), which is supported by H-1 NMR spectrum. Unlike their isoelectronic analogues [Co-3(dpa)(4)Cl-2] (3) and [Co-3(dpa)(4)(Cl)(2)]BF4 (4), both compound 1 and 2 do not display the spin-crossover phenomenon. The reason may be attributed to the relative large energy gap between B-3(1) and open-shell singlet B-1(1) states

    Exploring morphological correlations among H2CO, 12CO, MSX and continuum mappings

    There are relatively few H2CO mappings of large-area giant molecular cloud (GMCs). H2CO absorption lines are good tracers for low-temperature molecular clouds towards star formation regions. Thus, the aim of the study was to identify H2CO distributions in ambient molecular clouds. We investigated morphologic relations among 6-cm continuum brightness temperature (CBT) data and H2CO (111-110; Nanshan 25-m radio telescope), 12CO (1--0; 1.2-m CfA telescope) and midcourse space experiment (MSX) data, and considered the impact of background components on foreground clouds. We report simultaneous 6-cm H2CO absorption lines and H110\alpha radio recombination line observations and give several large-area mappings at 4.8 GHz toward W49 (50'\times50'), W3 (70'\times90'), DR21/W75 (60'\times90') and NGC2024/NGC2023 (50'\times100') GMCs. By superimposing H2CO and 12CO contours onto the MSX color map, we can compare correlations. The resolution for H2CO, 12CO and MSX data was about 10', 8' and 18.3", respectively. Comparison of H2CO and 12CO contours, 8.28-\mu m MSX colorscale and CBT data revealed great morphological correlation in the large area, although there are some discrepancies between 12CO and H2CO peaks in small areas. The NGC2024/NGC2023 GMC is a large area of HII regions with a high CBT, but a H2CO cloud to the north is possible against the cosmic microwave background. A statistical diagram shows that 85.21% of H2CO absorption lines are distributed in the intensity range from -1.0 to 0 Jy and the \Delta V range from 1.206 to 5 km/s.Comment: 18 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables.     Acute anal stretch inhibits NMDA-dependent pelvic-urethra reflex potentiation via spinal GABAergic inhibition in anesthetized rats

    The impact of acute anal stretch on the pelvic-urethra reflex potentiation was examined in urethane-anesthetized rats by recording the external urethra sphincter electromyogram activity evoked by the pelvic afferent stimulation. Test stimulation (1 stimulation/30 s) evoked a baseline reflex activity with a single action potential that was abolished by gallamine (5 mg/kg iv). On the other hand, the repetitive stimulation (1 stimulation/1 s) induced spinal reflex potentiation (SRP) that was attenuated by intrathecal 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline- 2,4-dione (a glutamatergic alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl- 4-isoxazoleproprionat receptor antagonist, 100 mu M, 10 mu l) and D-2-amino-5-phosphonovalerate [a glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, 100 mu M, 10 mu l]. Acute anal stretch using a mosquito clamp with a distance of 4 mm exhibited no effect, whereas distances of 8 mm attenuated and 12 mm abolished the repetitive stimulation-induced SRP. Intrathecal NMDA (100 mu M, 10 mu l) reversed the abolition on SRP caused by anal stretch. On the other hand, pretreated bicuculline [gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) A receptor antagonist, 100 mu M, 10 mu l] but not hydroxysaclofen (GABA(B) receptor antagonist) counteracted the abolition on the repetitive stimulation-induced SRP caused by the anal stretch. All of the results suggested that anal stretch may be used as an adjunct to assist voiding dysfunction in patients with overactive urethra sphincter and that GABAergic neurotransmission is important in the neural mechanisms underlying external urethra sphincter activity inhibited by anal stretch

    Nuclear effects in the Drell-Yan process at very high energies

    We study Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production in proton(deuterium)-nucleus and in nucleus-nucleus collisions within the light-cone color dipole formalism. This approach is especially suitable for predicting nuclear effects in the DY cross section for heavy ion collisions, as it provides the impact parameter dependence of nuclear shadowing and transverse momentum broadening, quantities that are not available from the standard parton model. For p(D)+A collisions we calculate nuclear shadowing and investigate nuclear modification of the DY transverse momentum distribution at RHIC and LHC for kinematics corresponding to coherence length much longer than the nuclear size. Calculations are performed separately for transversely and longitudinally polarized DY photons, and predictions are presented for the dilepton angular distribution. Furthermore, we calculate nuclear broadening of the mean transverse momentum squared of DY dileptons as function of the nuclear mass number and energy. We also predict nuclear effects for the cross section of the DY process in heavy ion collisions.     Transverse momentum resummation for Higgs boson produced via bb-bar fusion at hadron colliders

    We study the impact of initial-state multiple parton radiation on transverse momentum (qT)(q_T) distribution of Higgs boson produced via bottom quark fusion at hadron colliders. The shape of the resulting qTq_T distribution is affected by the bottom-quark mass corrections and by the strong kinematical behavior of the bottom-quark parton density. We account for both features in the full range of qTq_T. To do this, we formulate the resummation calculation in a general-mass factorization (S-ACOT) scheme and introduce a correction in the resummed-term to account for the effect from large-qTq_T kinematics of Higgs boson. The results of this resummation are compared to fixed-order and PYTHIA predictions.Comment: LaTex, 20 pages, 7 figure
