    Energy Conservation Constraints on Multiplicity Correlations in QCD Jets

    We compute analytically the effects of energy conservation on the self-similar structure of parton correlations in QCD jets. The calculations are performed both in the constant and running coupling cases. It is shown that the corrections are phenomenologically sizeable.     Pion and Kaon Production in e+e−e^+e^- and epep Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order

    We present new sets of fragmentation functions for charged pions and kaons, both at leading and next-to-leading order. They are fitted to data on inclusive charged-hadron production in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation taken by TPC at PEP (s=29\sqrt s=29~GeV) and to similar data by ALEPH at LEP, who discriminated between events with charm, bottom, and light- flavour fragmentation in their charged-hadron sample. We treat all partons independently and to properly incorporate the charm and bottom thresholds. Due to the sizeable energy gap between PEP and LEP, we are sensitive to the scaling violation in the fragmentation process, which allows us to extract a value for the asymptotic scale parameter of QCD, Λ\Lambda. Recent data on inclusive charged-hadron production in tagged three-jet events by OPAL and similar data for longitudinal electron polarization by ALEPH allow us to pin down the gluon fragmentation functions. Our new fragmentation functions lead to an excellent description of a multitude of other e+e−e^+e^- data on inclusive charged-hadron production, ranging from s=5.2\sqrt s=5.2~GeV to LEP energy. In addition, they agree nicely with the transverse-momentum spectra of single charged hadrons measured by H1 and ZEUS in photoproduction at the epep collider HERA, which represents a nontrivial check of the factorization theorem of the QCD-improved parton model.Comment: 22 pages, latex, 13 compressed ps figures in separate fil

    Generalised Factorial Moments and QCD Jets

    { In this paper we present a natural and comprehensive generalisation of the standard factorial moments (\clFq) analysis of a multiplicity distribution. The Generalised Factorial Moments are defined for all qq in the complex plane and, as far as the negative part of its spectrum is concerned, could be useful for the study of infrared structure of the Strong Interactions Theory of high energy interactions (LEP multiplicity distribution under the Z0{\cal Z}_0). The QCD calculation of the Generalised Factorial Moments for negative qq is performed in the double leading log accuracy and is compared to OPAL experimental data.     We calculate the inclusive production of charged hadrons in \pbp collisions to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the QCD improved parton model using a new set of NLO fragmentation functions for charged pions and kaons. We predict transverse-momentum distributions and compare them with experimental data from the CERN S\pbpS Collider and the Fermilab Tevatron.Comment: the file containing the figures has been replaced: we correct a mistake in the uuencoding procedure and we give the real Fig 4 instead of the spurious one which was accidentally included in the previous file. the text is unchanged

    Multiplicity with a Thrust Cut

    We evaluate the multiplicity of hadrons in the e+e−e^+e^--annihilation at a given thrust TT in the modified leading-log approximation, including O(αs)O(\sqrt{\alpha_s}) corrections. The calculation is done at a large value of τ=1−T\tau =1-T by the use of the factorisation which takes place in the one-particle-inclusive cross section at a given τ\tau. At a small τ\tau, a different type of factorisation takes place, which also enable us to evaluate the multiplicity. Two approaches are compared numerically. Measuring this quantity near τ=1/3\tau =1/3, we can determine the multiplicity ratio between a gluon-jet and a quark-jet.Comment: OCHA-PP-32, LATEX FILE, 21

    CP Violation and the Width Z→bbˉZ\rightarrow b\bar{b}

    We discuss the effect of CP-violating ZbbˉZb\bar{b}, ZbbˉGZb\bar{b}G and ZbbˉγZb\bar{b}\gamma couplings on the width Γ(Z→bbˉX)\Gamma(Z\rightarrow b\bar bX). The presence of such couplings leads in a natural way to an increase of this width relative to the prediction of the standard model. Various strategies of a direct search for such CP-violating couplings by using CP-odd observables are outlined. The number of ZZ bosons required to obtain significant information on the couplings in this way is well within the reach of present LEP experiments.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, no figure

    Complete Order alpha_s^3 Results for e^+ e^- to (gamma,Z) to Four Jets

    We present the next-to-leading order (O(alpha_s^3)) perturbative QCD predictions for e^+e^- annihilation into four jets. A previous calculation omitted the O(alpha_s^3) terms suppressed by one or more powers of 1/N_c^2, where N_c is the number of colors, and the `light-by-glue scattering' contributions. We find that all such terms are uniformly small, constituting less than 10% of the correction. For the Durham clustering algorithm, the leading and next-to-leading logarithms in the limit of small jet resolution parameter y_{cut} can be resummed. We match the resummed results to our fixed-order calculation in order to improve the small y_{cut} prediction.Comment: Latex2e, 17 pages with 5 encapsulated figures.     Optimized Variables of the Study of Λb\Lambda_b Polarization

    The value of the bb-baryon polarization can be extracted from inclusive data at LEP with better than 10\% precision based on current statistics. We present a new variable by which to measure the polarization, which is the ratio of the average electron energy to the average neutrino energy.     A Monte-Carlo generator for statistical hadronization in high energy e+e- collisions

    We present a Monte-Carlo implementation of the Statistical Hadronization Model in e+e- collisions. The physical scheme is based on the statistical hadronization of massive clusters produced by the event generator Herwig within the microcanonical ensemble. We present a preliminary comparison of several observables with measurements in e+e- collisions at the Z peak. Although a fine tuning of the model parameters is not carried out, a general good agreement between its predictions and data is found.Comment: 19 pages, 28 figures, 6 tables. v2: added sections on comparison between the Statistical Hadronization Model and the Cluster Model and on the interplay between Herwig cluster splitting algorithm and Statistical Hadronization Model predictions.     CP violation at colliders

    The prospects of experimental detection of CPCP violation at e+e−e^+e^- and pp/pp‟pp/p\overline{p} colliders are reviewed. After a general discussion on the quantities which can measure CPCP violation and on the implications of the CPTCPT theorem, various possibilities of measuring CPCP violation arising outside the standard model are taken up. CPCP violation in leptonic processes, especially polarization effects in e+e−→l+l−e^+e^-\rightarrow l^+l^- are discussed next. CPCP violation in tt‟t\overline{t} and W+W−W^+W^- production and decay is also described.
