Nonperturbative solution of the Nonconfining Schwinger Model with a generalized regularization

Nonconfining Schwinger Model [AR] is studied with a one parameter class of kinetic energy like regularization. It may be thought of as a generalization over the regularization considered in [AR]. Phasespace structure has been determined in this new situation. The mass of the gauge boson acquires a generalized expression with the bare coupling constant and the parameters involved in the regularization. Deconfinement scenario has become transparent at the quark-antiquark potential level.Comment: 13 pages latex fil

995-22 The Effect of Perioperative Storage Solutions on the Long Term Vein Graft Function and Morphology

It has been shown that suboptimal preparation of a vein graft prior to its insertion results in immediate morphological and functional damage to the endothelial cells but not to the underlying smooth muscle cells. However. little is known if such perioperative injury to the vein grafts may influence the subsequent development of intimal hyperplasia and smooth muscle cell contractility. This study examines the influence of storage in saline or Ringer's lactate on the development of intimal hyperplasia and vasomotor function in experimental vein grafts. Twenty-six NM rabbits had a carotid vein bypass graft performed after the veins had been immersed (15 minutes) in either heparinized saline (Sal; n=13) or Ringer's lactate (RL; n=13) and each group was harvested after 28 days for either histology (n=8) or functional studies (n=5; four 5 mm rings/graft). Saline storage of the vein graft resulted in a 38% increase in the thickness of the intimal hyperplasia (113±2 vs. 83±Όm, Sal vs. RL; mean±SEM, p<0.05) without a change in medial thickness (87±5 vs. 86±8Όm, Sal vs. RL; p>0.05). There was no difference in the sensitivity to norepinephrine, serotonin and bradykinin between the two sets of vein grafts. The maximal contractile forces to serotonin and bradykinin were increased in the saline compared to Ringer's lactate stored vein grafts.SalineRinger'sp-valueNorepinephrine0.88±0.121.57±020<0.05Serotonin1.23±0.150.37±013<0.01Bradykinin2.08±0.110.52±007<0.01Values are the standardized maximal contractile force (maximal contraction/contraction to 60 mM KCI) expressed as mean±SEM.Saline storage of the vein graft results in the increased development of intimal hyperplasia with an overall enhanced contractility but without changes in agonist sensitivity. This study places further emphasis on the need for good perioperative care of the vein bypass graft because it results not only in the previously documented short term problems but also in long term structural and contractile changes which may contribute to decreased graft patency

    HS 1857+5144 : a hot and young pre-cataclysmic variable

Aims. We report the discovery of a new white dwarf/M dwarf binary, HS 1857+5144, identified in the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS). Methods. Time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry were carried out to determine the properties of this new cataclysmic variable progenitor (pre-CV). Results. The light curves of HS 1857+5144 display a sinusoidal variation with a period of Porb = 383.52 min and peak-to-peak amplitudes of 0.7 mag and 1.1mag in the B-band and R-band, respectively. The large amplitude of the brightness variation results from a reflection effect on the heated inner hemisphere of the companion star, suggesting a very high temperature of the white dwarf. Our radial velocity study confirms the photometric period as the orbital period of the system. A model atmosphere fit to the spectrum of the white dwarf obtained at minimum light provides limits to its mass and temperature of Mwd 0.6−1.0 M and Twd 70 000−100 000 K, respectively. The detection of He II λ4686 absorption classifies the primary star of HS 1857+5144 as a DAO white dwarf. Combining the results from our spectroscopy and photometry, we estimate the mass of the companion star and the binary inclination to be Msec 0.15−0.30 M and i 45◩−55◩, respectively. Conclusions. We classify HS 1857+5144 as one of the youngest pre-CV known to date. The cooling age of the white dwarf suggests that the present system has just emerged from a common envelope phase ∌105 yr ago. HS 1857+5144 will start mass transfer within or below the 2–3 h period gap

A Generalized Gauge Invariant Regularization of the Schwinger Model

The Schwinger model is studied with a new one - parameter class of gauge invariant regularizations that generalizes the usual point - splitting or Fujikawa schemes. The spectrum is found to be qualitatively unchanged, except for a limiting value of the regularizing parameter, where free fermions appear in the spectrum.Comment: 16 pages, SINP/TNP/93-1

Operator Ordering Problem of the Nonrelativistic Chern-Simons Theory

The operator ordering problem due to the quantization or regularization ambiguity in the Chern-Simons theory exists. However, we show that this can be avoided if we require Galilei covariance of the nonrelativistic Abelian Chern-Simons theory even at the quantum level for the extended sources. The covariance can be recovered only by choosing some particular operator orderings for the generators of the Galilei group depending on the quantization ambiguities of the gauge−mattergauge-matter commutation relation. We show that the desired ordering for the unusual prescription is not the same as the well-known normal ordering but still satisfies all the necessary conditions. Furthermore, we show that the equations of motion can be expressed in a similar form regardless of the regularization ambiguity. This suggests that the different regularization prescriptions do not change the physics. On the other hand, for the case of point sources the regularization prescription is uniquely determined, and only the orderings, which are equivalent to the usual one, are allowed.Comment: 18 page

    Covariance systems

We introduce new definitions of states and of representations of covariance systems. The GNS-construction is generalized to this context. It associates a representation with each state of the covariance system. Next, states are extended to states of an appropriate covariance algebra. Two applications are given. We describe a nonrelativistic quantum particle, and we give a simple description of the quantum spacetime model introduced by Doplicher et al.Comment: latex with ams-latex, 23 page

Uniqueness Theorem for Static Black Hole Solutions of sigma-models in Higher Dimensions

We prove the uniqueness theorem for self-gravitating non-linear sigma-models in higher dimensional spacetime. Applying the positive mass theorem we show that Schwarzschild-Tagherlini spacetime is the only maximally extended, static asymptotically flat solution with non-rotating regular event horizon with a constant mapping.Comment: 5 peges, Revtex, to be published in Class.Quantum Gra

Comprehensive geriatric care for patients with hip fractures: a prospective, randomised, controlled trial

Background: Most patients with hip fractures are characterised by older age (>70 years), frailty, and functional deterioration, and their long-term outcomes are poor with increased costs. We compared the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of giving these patients comprehensive geriatric care in a dedicated geriatric ward versus the usual orthopaedic care. Methods: We did a prospective, single-centre, randomised, parallel-group, controlled trial. Between April 18, 2008, and Dec 30, 2010, we randomly assigned home-dwelling patients with hip-fractures aged 70 years or older who were able to walk 10 m before their fracture, to either comprehensive geriatric care or orthopaedic care in the emergency department, to achieve the required sample of 400 patients. Randomisation was achieved via a web-based, computer-generated, block method with unknown block sizes. The primary outcome, analysed by intention to treat, was mobility measured with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) 4 months after surgery for the fracture. The type of treatment was not concealed from the patients or staff delivering the care, and assessors were only partly masked to the treatment during follow-up. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00667914. Findings: We assessed 1077 patients for eligibility, and excluded 680, mainly for not meeting the inclusion criteria such as living in a nursing home or being aged less than 70 years. Of the remaining patients, we randomly assigned 198 to comprehensive geriatric care and 199 to orthopaedic care. At 4 months, 174 patients remained in the comprehensive geriatric care group and 170 in the orthopaedic care group; the main reason for dropout was death. Mean SPPB scores at 4 months were 5·12 (SE 0·20) for comprehensive geriatric care and 4·38 (SE 0·20) for orthopaedic care (between-group difference 0·74, 95% CI 0·18–1·30, p=0·010). Interpretation: Immediate admission of patients aged 70 years or more with a hip fracture to comprehensive geriatric care in a dedicated ward improved mobility at 4 months, compared with the usual orthopaedic care. The results suggest that the treatment of older patients with hip fractures should be organised as orthogeriatric care.mĂ„sjekke

On the Nonabelian Aharonov Bohm Scattering of Spinless Particles

The Aharonov Bohm scattering for spinless, isospin 1/2, particles interacting through a nonabelian Chern-Simons field is studied. Starting from the relativistic quantum field theory and using a Coulomb gauge formulation, the one loop renormalization program is implemented. Through the introduction of an intermediary cutoff, separating the regions of high and low integration momentum, the nonrelativistic limit is derived. The next to leading relativistic approximation is also determined. In this approach quantum field theory vacuum polarization effects are automatically incorporated.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, revtex. Misspelled reference corrected and new references adde
