Superconducting Gap Function in Antiferromagnetic Heavy-Fermion UPd_2Al_3 Probed by Angle Resolved Magnetothermal Transport Measurements

The superconducting gap structure of heavy fermion UPd_2Al_3, in which unconventional superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetic (AF) order with atomic size local moments, was investigated by the thermal conductivity measurements in a magnetic field rotating in various directions relative to the crystal axes. The results provide strong evidence that the gap function \Delta(k) has a single line node orthogonal to the c-axis located at the AF Brillouin zone boundary, while \Delta(k) is isotropic within the basal plane. The determined nodal structure is compatible with the resonance peak in the dynamical susceptibility observed in neutron inelastic scattering experiments. Based on these results, we conclude that the superconducting pairing function of UPd_2Al_3 is most likely to be d-wave with a form \Delta(k)=\Delta_0 cos(k_zc)Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

Uniform Mixing of High-Tc Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism on a Single CuO2 Plane in Hg-based Five-layered Cuprate

We report a site selective Cu-NMR study on under-doped Hg-based five-layered high-TcT_{\rm c} cuprate HgBa2Ca4Cu5Oy with a Tc=72 K. Antiferromagnetism (AF) has been found to take place at TN=290 K, exhibiting a large antiferromagnetic moment of 0.67-0.69uB at three inner planes (IP's). This value is comparable to the values reported for non-doped cuprates, suggesting that the IP may be in a nearly non-doped regime. Most surprisingly, the AF order is also detected with M(OP)=0.1uB even at two outer planes (OP's) that are responsible for the onset of superconductivity (SC). The high-Tc SC at Tc = 72 K can uniformly coexist on a microscopic level with the AF at OP's. This is the first microscopic evidence for the uniform mixed phase of AF and SC on a single CuO2 plane in a simple environment without any vortex lattice and/or stripe order.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Doping Dependence of Anisotropic Resistivities in Trilayered Superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta (Bi-2223)

The doping dependence of the themopower, in-plane resistivity rho_ab(T), out-of-plane resistivity rho_c(T), and susceptibility has been systematically measured for high-quality single crystal Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta. We found that the transition temperature Tc and pseudogap formation temperature T_rho_c*, below which rho_c shows a typical upturn, do not change from their optimum values in the "overdoped" region, even though doping actually proceeds. This suggests that, in overdoped region, the bulk TcT_c is determined by the always underdoped inner plane, which have a large superconducting gap, while the carriers are mostly doped in the outer planes, which have a large phase stiffness.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. to be published in PR

Phase Diagram of Spinless Fermions on an Anisotropic Triangular Lattice at Half-filling

The strong coupling phase diagram of the spinless fermions on the anisotropic triangular lattice at half-filling is presented. The geometry of inter-site Coulomb interactions rules the phase diagram. Unconventional charge ordered phases are detected which are the recently reported pinball liquid and the striped chains. Both are induced by the quantum dynamics out of classical disordered states and afford extremely correlated metallic states and the particular domain wall-type of excitations, respectively. The disorder once killed by the quantum effect revives at the finite temperature, which is discussed in the terms of the organic θ\theta-ET2X_2X.Comment: 4pages 6figure

Aluminum matrix texture and particle characterization in Al-Al3Ti FGMs produced by a centrifugal solid-particle method

The centrifugal solid-particle method has proved to be effective in producing functionally graded materials (FGMs). In this study, Al-Al3Ti FGMs, were produced by this centrifugal method, from an Al-5 wt % Ti master alloy. Applied centrifugal forces were 30, 60 and 120G (units of gravity). Samples from the outer surface of each specimen were cut and aluminum matrix texture analyzed by Schulz reflection method. Analysis of the resulting pole figures indicates a preferred orientation along the (200) plane for the aluminum matrix crystals. Furthermore, increasing the applied centrifugal force enhances the orientation effect. Al3Ti platelet orientation and area fraction at the samples’ outer surface along three observation planes were also measured. The Al3Ti platelets in the outer region are orientated perpendicular to the centrifugal force direction along two of the observed planes, also an increase in centrifugal force leads to an increase in orientation in those two planes. The intermetallic particle volume fraction also increases with higher applied centrifugal force, although not significantly. A correlation appears to exist between particle orientation and the preferred orientation of the matrix.(undefined

Particle distribution and orientation in Al-Al3Zr and Al-Al3Ti FGMs produced by the centrifugal method

Al-Al3Zr and Al-Al3Ti functionally graded materials (FGMs) were produced by a centrifugal method from Al-5wt% Zr and Al-5wt% Ti alloys, respectively. Applied centrifugal forces were 30, 60 and 120G (units of gravity). Microstructural characterization was performed to evaluate the intermetallic particles’ distribution and orientation. Knoop hardness tests were carried out, with the indenter’s long diameter normal to the centrifugal force direction. Both the Al3Zr and the Al3Ti intermetallic particles are platelet in morphology. These platelets tend to be oriented normal to the centrifugal force direction. Higher applied centrifugal force increases both the intermetallic platelet volume fraction as well as their orientation in the outer regions of the fabricated FGM rings. Also higher orientation and volume fraction distribution are observed in the Al- Al3Ti FGMs. Knoop hardness measurements in general follow the same trend as the intermetallic particle volume fraction for each sample.(undefined
