    Charged complexes at the surface of liquid helium

    Full text link
    Charged clusters in liquid helium in an external electric field form a two-dimensional system below the helium surface. This 2D system undergoes a phase transition from a liquid to a Wigner crystal at rather high temperatures. Contrary to the electron Wigner crystal, the Wigner lattice of charged clusters can be detected directly.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur

    Fast Incomplete Decoherence of Nuclear Spins in Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

    Full text link
    A scenario of quantum computing process based on the manipulation of a large number of nuclear spins in Quantum Hall (QH) ferromagnet is presented. It is found that vacuum quantum fluctuations in the QH ferromagnetic ground state at filling factor ν=1\nu =1, associated with the virtual excitations of spin waves, lead to fast incomplete decoherence of the nuclear spins. A fundamental upper bound on the length of the computer memory is set by this fluctuation effect

    Spin-Peierls transition with strong structural fluctuations in the vanadium oxide VOSb2_{2}O4_{4}

    Full text link
    We report on the magnetic susceptibility and electron spin resonance measurements on polycrystalline samples of the vanadium oxide VOSb2_{2}O4_{4}, a quasi-one dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg system. We show that the susceptibility vanishes at zero temperature, as in a gapped system, and we argue that this is due to a spin-Peierls transition with strong structural fluctuations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
