Along the 250 kilometer coastline of the Gulf of Kutch, there are no prawn farming activities Millions of juveniles of prawns ascending the creeks in the little Rann of Kutch are trapped by staked bag nets are marketed for meagre revenue. The fishermen remain in perpetual poverty due to drought prone conditions of the coast during remaining period of the year. A tidal range of 2.6 metres and high salinity conditions of the Gulf of Kutch necessitate capital investment for supply, retention and exchange of seawater in farming operations. The available seed are not of quick growing variety of prawns. An experimental project was initiated in 1979 firstly to explore the feasibility of utilisation of low saline reservoirs of solar salt works in Okha mandal for extensive prawn farming using the indigenous seed and there after to assess the culturability, economic viability and management problems associated with small scale intensive farming. During September 1986 to IVIarch 1987, seed of Penaeus mergulensis and Metapenaeus kutchensis @ 36332 nos/hectare were stocked in three ponds of 1.92 hectare each. A growth rate of 0.437 mm/day length and 0.056 gm/day weight in respect of the former and 0.33 mm/day length and 0.037 gm/day weight in respect of the latter species in 187 days of rearing was achieved. The harvested prawns were acceptable to freezing industry and fetched Rs. 14000-23000 (Headon) per tonne. The advantages of employment generation, economic up liftment and utilisation of the monsoon seed resources for farming are discussed

A study of comparitive analysis of the outcome of Hardinge’s and Moore’s approach of hemi arthroplasty of hip

Background: The posterior (Moore) approach is generally considered to be easy to perform and has less tissue dissection, which leads to shorter operation times and less blood loss. The lateral (Hardinge) approach can provide generous exposure of the acetabulum, which facilitates cup positioning results may decrease rates of hip dislocation. Methods: In this study a prospective comparative study of outcome of Hardinge’s vs. Moore’s approach in hemi arthroplasty of hip done on 60 consecutive consenting cases who presented with a primary diagnosis of neck of femur fractures. The Selection of patients was randomized by selecting every alternate case of neck of femur fractures by Moore’s approach or Hardinge’s approach. Study recruited 30 cases in each group after the preoperative parameters like age, sex, side, mechanism of injury and the type of fracture. Results: 30 cases underwent hemi - arthroplasty of hip by Hardinge’s approach vs. Moore’s technique and we found that there was difference in duration of hospital stay, the duration of healing and the rate of complications were much higher in the Moore’s technique. In our study there was no mortality. Conclusions: Based on the findings of our study we recommend that between Hardinge’s and Moore’s approach, Hardinge’s approach is recommended as better than Moore’s approach due to number of complications is lower in Hardinge’s

The angst of the Dehumanized: Ubuntu for Solidarity

This article attempts to delve into the multiple forms of violence experienced by South African women, within the theoretical framework of the ecological model of abuse proposed by Lori L. Heise (1998). The objective of the article is to explore how the communitarian dimension of ubuntu is absent when the womenfolk is in question. Their existence itself appears to be insignificant compared to their counterparts. Ubuntu cannot be lived or practiced while some are excluded from this concept. Gender inequality and inequitable status of existence cannot be part of ubuntu, as “I am, because you are” or the meaning of ubuntu cannot be fully experienced in such unbalanced circumstances. The violence against women by members of the same community and family is quite alarming. It is evident in such instances that women are commodified for the benefit of men due to their patriarchal nature. The subtle ways in which patriarchy operates, silence women and make them incapable of standing for their rights or resisting the oppression. The article thus discusses the oppressive social systems that exist in South Africa and their implications for the practical living of ubuntu

Duration of analgesia, sensory and motor blockade and intra operative hemodynamic changes caused by intrathecal bupivacaine, bupivacaine plus clonidine and bupivacaine plus dexmedetomidine in spinal anesthesia: prospective, comparative study

Background: This is comparative study to differentiate the effects of Dexmedetomidine and clonidine on duration of analgesia, motor and sensory blockade and the intraoperative hemodynamic profile when mixed with Bupivacaine. Methods: Patients aged 15-45 years having ASA 1 and ASA 2 scheduled for elective orthopedic surgeries under spinal anaesthesia were included and divided into 3 groups equally (50 patients each)’ i.e. Group B received only 3.0 ml of 0.5% Bupivacaine (Heavy); Group C received 3.0ml of 0.5% Bupivacaine (Heavy) mixed with Clonidine 30 µg; and Group D administered with 3.0 ml of 0.5% Bupivacaine (Heavy) mixed with 5µg Dexmedetomidine. Results: Majority of the cases enrolled in the study were knee disorders and the rest being fracture femur, tibia. At preoperative interval mean systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure of Group B was slightly higher than Group C and Group D. At the time when spinal anaesthesia was given, a slight fall in DBP of patients was observed in all Group B, Group C and Group D. Mean heart rate of patients at preoperative interval in patients of Group B, Group C and Group D respectively, with Group C and Group D showing slightly lower mean heart rate as compared with that of the mean heart rate of Group B but the values were not statistically significant. There were no any significant changes in the hemodynamic status. Conclusions: Both of used combinations provide prolonged sensory and motor blockade, hemodynamic stability, minimal side effects, and excellent intraoperative and postoperative analgesia

Influence of Cost Share and EQIP Incentive Payments on Adoptions of Best Management Practices by Louisiana Dairy Farmers

Adoption of best management practices (BMPs) minimizes the negative externalities created by the manure by-product of milk production. Logistic regression procedure was used to understand the impact of socioeconomic attributes of Louisiana dairy farmers on BMP adoption decision relative to the cost share and incentive payment.Farm Management,

Logistic and tobit models were used to understand the factors affecting dairy program participation and stated bid values by respondents. Results indicated that past participation is the key variable in regression. Bootstrap result confirms that most of the estimated parameters fall within the range of bootstrap confidence interval.Livestock Production/Industries,

Factors Influencing and Steps Leading to the Adoption of Best Management Practices by Louisiana Dairy Farmers

A logistic regression procedure was used to assess the impact of socioeconomic attributes on the best management practices (BMPs) adoption decision by Louisiana dairy farmers relative to cost-share and fixed incentive payments. Analysis of the steps in the BMP adoption decision process indicated visits between producers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture–Natural Resource Conservation Service significantly increase likelihood of BMP adoption. Producer willingness-to-pay results indicate that marginal increases in dairy BMP adoption and associated improvement in environmental quality require increased technical and financial assistance.best management practices, bootstrap, cost-share, manure, steps in BMP adoption, Agribusiness, Agricultural and Food Policy, Farm Management, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Q16, Q25, Q53,
