"Doubled" generalized Landau-Lifshiz hierarchies and special quasigraded Lie algebras
Using special quasigraded Lie algebras we obtain new hierarchies of
integrable nonlinear vector equations admitting zero-curvature representations.
Among them the most interesting is extension of the generalized Landau-Lifshitz
hierarchy which we call "doubled" generalized Landau-Lifshiz hierarchy. This
hierarchy can be also interpreted as an anisotropic vector generalization of
"modified" Sine-Gordon hierarchy or as a very special vector generalization of

Green consumer markets in the fight against climate change
Climate change has become one of the greatest threats to environmental security, as attested by the growing frequency of severe flooding and storms, extreme temperatures and droughts. Accordingly, the European Union’s (EU) 6th Environment Action Programme (2010) lists tackling climate change as its first priority. A key aim of the EU has been to cut CO2 emissions, a major factor in climate change, by 8% until 2012 and 20% until 2020. The European Commission has proposed the encouragement of private consumer market for green products and services as one of several solutions to this problem. However, existing research suggests that the market share of these products has been only 3%, although 30% of individuals favour environmental and ethical goods. This article uses Public Goods Theory to explain why the contribution of the green consumer market to fighting climate change has been and possibly may remain limited without further public intervention
New way to achieve chaotic synchronization in spatially extended systems
We study the spatio-temporal behavior of simple coupled map lattices with
periodic boundary conditions. The local dynamics is governed by two maps,
namely, the sine circle map and the logistic map respectively. It is found that
even though the spatial behavior is irregular for the regularly coupled
(nearest neighbor coupling) system, the spatially synchronized (chaotic
synchronization) as well as periodic solution may be obtained by the
introduction of three long range couplings at the cost of three nearest

Shear induced grain boundary motion for lamellar phases in the weakly nonlinear regime
We study the effect of an externally imposed oscillatory shear on the motion
of a grain boundary that separates differently oriented domains of the lamellar
phase of a diblock copolymer. A direct numerical solution of the
Swift-Hohenberg equation in shear flow is used for the case of a
transverse/parallel grain boundary in the limits of weak nonlinearity and low
shear frequency. We focus on the region of parameters in which both transverse
and parallel lamellae are linearly stable. Shearing leads to excess free energy
in the transverse region relative to the parallel region, which is in turn
dissipated by net motion of the boundary toward the transverse region. The
observed boundary motion is a combination of rigid advection by the flow and
order parameter diffusion. The latter includes break up and reconnection of
lamellae, as well as a weak Eckhaus instability in the boundary region for
sufficiently large strain amplitude that leads to slow wavenumber readjustment.
The net average velocity is seen to increase with frequency and strain
amplitude, and can be obtained by a multiple scale expansion of the governing
equations
Spatiotemporal pulses in a liquid crystal optical oscillator
A nonlinear optical medium results by the collective orientation of liquid
crystal molecules tightly coupled to a transparent photoconductive layer. We
show that such a medium can give a large gain, thus, if inserted in a ring
cavity, it results in an unidirectional optical oscillator. Dynamical regimes
with many interacting modes are made possible by the wide transverse size and
the high nonlinearity of the liquid crystals. We show the generation of
spatiotemporal pulses, coming from the random superposition of many coexisting
modes with different frequencies
Ultra-short pulses in linear and nonlinear media
We consider the evolution of ultra-short optical pulses in linear and
nonlinear media. For the linear case, we first show that the initial-boundary
value problem for Maxwell's equations in which a pulse is injected into a
quiescent medium at the left endpoint can be approximated by a linear wave
equation which can then be further reduced to the linear short-pulse equation.
A rigorous proof is given that the solution of the short pulse equation stays
close to the solutions of the original wave equation over the time scales
expected from the multiple scales derivation of the short pulse equation. For
the nonlinear case we compare the predictions of the traditional nonlinear
Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE) approximation which those of the short pulse
equation (SPE). We show that both equations can be derived from Maxwell's
equations using the renormalization group method, thus bringing out the
contrasting scales. The numerical comparison of both equations to Maxwell's
equations shows clearly that as the pulse length shortens, the NLSE
approximation becomes steadily less accurate while the short pulse equation
provides a better and better approximation
A systematic review of current knowledge of HIV epidemiology and of sexual behaviour in Nepal
OBJECTIVE: To systematically review information on HIV epidemiology and on sexual behaviour in Nepal with a view to identifying gaps in current knowledge.
METHODS: Systematic review covering electronic databases, web-based information, personal contact with experts and hand searching of key journals.
RESULTS: HIV-1 seroprevalence has been rising rapidly in association with high-risk behaviours, with current levels of 40% amongst the nation's injecting drug users and approaching 20% amongst Kathmandu's female commercial sex workers (FCSWs). HIV seroprevalence remains low in the general population (0.29% of 15–49 year olds). There are significant methodological limitations in many of the seroprevalence studies identified, and these estimates need to be treated with caution. There are extensive migration patterns both within the country and internationally which provide the potential for considerable sexual networking. However, studies of sexual behaviour have focused on FCSWs and the extent of sexual networks within the general population is largely unknown.
CONCLUSIONS: Whilst some of the ingredients are present for an explosive HIV epidemic in Nepal, crucial knowledge on sexual behaviour in the general population is missing. Research on sexual networking is urgently required to guide HIV control in Nepal. There is also a need for further good-quality epidemiological studies of HIV seroprevalence
