Development and Validation of the FSIQ-RMS: A New Patient-Reported Questionnaire to Assess Symptoms and Impacts of Fatigue in Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis

Objectives: A new patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument to measure fatigue symptoms and impacts in relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS) was developed in a qualitative stage, followed by psychometric validation and migration from paper to an electronic format. Methods: Adult patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) were interviewed to elicit fatigue-related symptoms and impacts. A draft questionnaire was debriefed in cognitive interviews with further RRMS patients, and revised. Content confirmation interviews were conducted with patients with progressive-relapsing multiple sclerosis (PRMS) and relapsing secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (RSPMS). Psychometric analyses used data from adult patients with different RMS subtypes and matched non-RMS controls in a multicenter, observational study. After item reduction, the final instrument was migrated to a smartphone (eDiary) and usability was confirmed in interviews with additional adult RMS patients. Results: The qualitative stage included 37 RRMS, 5 PRMS, and 5 RSPMS patients. Saturation of concepts was reached during concept elicitation. Cognitive interviews confirmed that participants understood the instructions, items, and response options of the instrument—named FSIQ-RMS—as intended. Psychometric validation included 164 RMS and 74 control patients. Internal consistency and test–retest reliability were demonstrated. The symptoms domain discriminated along the RMS symptom-severity continuum and between patients and controls. Patients were able to attribute fatigue-related symptoms to RMS. Usability and conceptual equivalence of the eDiary were confirmed (n = 10 participants). Conclusions: With 7 symptom items and 13 impact items (in 3 impacts subdomains: physical, cognitive and emotional, and coping) after item reduction, the FSIQ-RMS is a comprehensive, valid, and reliable measure of fatigue-related symptoms and impacts in RMS patients

Polarity of bacterial magnetotaxis is controlled by aerotaxis through a common sensory pathway

Most motile bacteria navigate within gradients of external chemical stimuli by regulating the length of randomly oriented swimming episodes. Magnetotactic bacteria are characterized by chains of intracellular ferromagnetic nanoparticles and their ability to sense the geomagnetic field, which is believed to facilitate directed motion, but is not well understood at the behavioural and molecular level. Here, we show that cells of Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense unexpectedly display swimming polarity that depends on aerotactic signal transduction through one of its four chemotaxis operons (cheOp1). Growth of cells in magnetic fields superimposed on oxygen gradients results in a gradual inherited bias of swimming runs with one of the cell poles leading, such that the resulting overall swimming direction of entire populations can be reversed by changes in oxygen concentration. These findings clearly show that there is a direct molecular link between aerotactic sensing and the determination of magnetotactic polarity, through the sensory pathway, CheOp1

Spin rotation schemes at the ILC for two interaction regions and positron polarization with both helicities

    No full text
This note describes a spin rotation scheme for the ILC that allows the polarization spin vector of the electron and positron beams to be tuned independently for two Interaction Regions (IR). The correct spin direction for a particular IR can be selected by directing the beam into one of two parallel spin rotation beam lines located between the damping ring and the linac. With suitable fast kicker magnets, it is possible to rapidly switch between these parallel beam lines, so that polarized beams can be delivered to two IRs on a pulse train by pulse train basis. A similar scheme can be employed in the insertion beam line to the positron damping ring, to allow rapid helicity switching for polarized positrons

Bandwidth renormalization due to the intersite Coulomb interaction

The theory of correlated electrons is currently moving beyond the paradigmatic Hubbard UU, towards the investigation of intersite Coulomb interactions. Recent investigations have revealed that these interactions are relevant for the quantitative description of realistic materials. Physically, intersite interactions are responsible for two rather different effects: screening and bandwidth renormalization. We use a variational principle to disentangle the roles of these two processes and study how appropriate the recently proposed Fock treatment of intersite interactions is in correlated systems. The magnitude of this effect in graphene is calculated based on cRPA values of the intersite interaction. We also observe that the most interesting charge fluctuation phenomena actually occur at elevated temperatures, substantially higher than studied in previous investigations.Comment: New appendix on benzen

Critics have called Else Lasker-Schüler the greatest of all German women poets and one of the finest Jewish poets. This large and representative selection of translations by Robert P. Newton, supplemented by a biographical and critical introduction and a selected bibliography, was the first substantial presentation of her works in English at its original publication in 1982
