Memristive excitable cellular automata
The memristor is a device whose resistance changes depending on the polarity
and magnitude of a voltage applied to the device's terminals. We design a
minimalistic model of a regular network of memristors using
structurally-dynamic cellular automata. Each cell gets info about states of its
closest neighbours via incoming links. A link can be one 'conductive' or
'non-conductive' states. States of every link are updated depending on states
of cells the link connects. Every cell of a memristive automaton takes three
states: resting, excited (analog of positive polarity) and refractory (analog
of negative polarity). A cell updates its state depending on states of its
closest neighbours which are connected to the cell via 'conductive' links. We
study behaviour of memristive automata in response to point-wise and spatially
extended perturbations, structure of localised excitations coupled with
topological defects, interfacial mobile excitations and growth of information
pathways.Comment: Accepted to Int J Bifurcation and Chaos (2011
Tele-operated high speed anthropomorphic dextrous hands with object shape and texture identification
This paper reports on the development of two number of robotic hands have been developed which focus on tele-operated high speed anthropomorphic dextrous robotic hands. The aim of developing these hands was to achieve a system that seamlessly interfaced between humans and robots. To provide sensory feedback, to a remote operator tactile sensors were developed to be mounted on the robotic hands. Two systems were developed, the first, being a skin sensor capable of shape reconstruction placed on the palm of the hand to feed back the shape of objects grasped and the second is a highly sensitive tactile array for surface texture identification
InGaN nano-ring structures for high-efficiency light emitting diodes
A technique based on the Fresnel diffraction effect for the fabrication of nano-scale site-controlled ring structures in InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well structures has been demonstrated. The ring structures have an internal diameter of 500 nm and a wall width of 300 nm. A 1 cm-1 Raman shift has been measured, signifying substantial strain relaxation from the fabricated structure. The 9 nm blueshift observed in the cathodoluminescence spectra can be attributed to band filling and/or screening of the piezoelectric field. A light emitting diode based on this geometry has been demonstrated
Phenomenological constraints on minimally coupled exotic lepton triplets
By introducing a set of new triplet leptons (with nonzero hypercharge) that
can Yukawa couple to their Standard Model counterparts, new sources of
tree-level flavor changing currents are induced via mixing. In this work, we
study some of the consequences of such new contributions on processes such as
the leptonic decays of gauge bosons, and which violate lepton flavor, and mu-e conversion in
atomic nuclei. Constraints are then placed on the parameters associated with
the exotic triplets by invoking the current low-energy experimental data.
Moreover, the new physics contribution to the lepton anomalous magnetic moments
is calculated.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables (REVTeX4.1); v2: refs added, to appear

Intermittent generalized synchronization in unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators
A new behavior type of unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators near the
generalized synchronization transition has been detected. It has been shown
that the generalized synchronization appearance is preceded by the intermitted
behavior: close to threshold parameter value the coupled chaotic systems
demonstrate the generalized synchronization most of the time, but there are
time intervals during which the synchronized oscillations are interrupted by
non-synchronous bursts. This type of the system behavior has been called
intermitted generalized synchronization (IGS) by analogy with intermitted lag
synchronization (ILS) [Phys. Rev. E \textbf{62}, 7497 (2000)].Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, using epl.cls; published in Europhysics Letters.

A new neurosurgical tool incorporating differential geometry and cellular automata techniques
Using optical coherence imaging, it is possible to visualize seizure progression intraoperatively. However, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact epileptic focus. This is crucial in attempts to minimize the amount of resection necessary during surgical therapeutic interventions for epilepsy and is typically done approximately from visual inspection of optical coherence imaging stills. In this paper, we create an algorithm with the potential to pinpoint the source of a seizure from an optical coherence imaging still. To accomplish this, a grid is overlaid on optical coherence imaging stills. This then serves as a grid for a two-dimensional cellular automation. Each cell is associated with a Riemannian curvature tensor representing the curvature of the brain's surface in all directions for a cell. Cells which overlay portions of the image which show neurons that are firing are considered "depolarized"
Micro Raman Spectroscopy of Annealed Erbium Implanted GaN
Wurtzite GaN epilayers grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition on sapphire substrates were subsequently ion implanted with Er to a dose of 5×10¹⁵ cm⁻². The implanted samples were annealed in nitrogen atmosphere at different temperatures to facilitate recovery from implantation related damage. In this paper we report the annealing behavior of Erbium implanted GaN by using micro Raman spectroscopy and optimized annealing condition. We have observed almost full damage recovery of the crystalline quality of Er implanted GaN after annealing at 1000°C for 2 minute. This observation is further confirmed by using AFM images.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
Evidence for Factorization in Three-body B --> D(*) K- K0 Decays
Motivated by recent experimental results, we use a factorization approach to
study the three-body B --> D(*) K- K0 decay modes. Two mechanisms are proposed
for kaon pair production: current-produced (from vacuum) and transition (from B
meson). The Bbar0 --> D(*)+ K- K0 decay is governed solely by the
current-produced mechanism. As the kaon pair can be produced only by the vector
current, the matrix element can be extracted from e+ e- --> K Kbar processes
via isospin relations. The decay rates obtained this way are in good agreement
with experiment. Both current-produced and transition processes contribute to
B- --> D(*)0 K- K0 decays. By using QCD counting rules and the measured B- -->
D(*)0 K- K0 decay rates, the measured decay spectra can be understood.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Interacting classical and quantum particles
We apply Hall and Reginatto's theory of interacting classical and quantum
ensembles to harmonically coupled particles, with a view to understanding its
experimental implications. This hybrid theory has no free parameters and makes
distinctive predictions that should allow it to be experimentally distinguished
from quantum mechanics. It also bears on the questions of quantum measurement
and quantum gravity.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Charmless Two-body Baryonic B Decays
We study charmless two-body baryonic B decays in a diagramatic approach.
Relations on decay amplitudes are obtained. In general there are more than one
tree and more than one penguin amplitudes. The number of independent amplitudes
can be reduced in the large m_B limit. It leads to more predictive results.
Some prominent modes for experimental searches are pointed out.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
