    Questions of quality in repositories of open educational resources: a literature review

    Open educational resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials which are freely available and openly licensed. Repositories of OER (ROER) are platforms that host and facilitate access to these resources. ROER should not just be designed to store this content – in keeping with the aims of the OER movement, they should support educators in embracing open educational practices (OEP) such as searching for and retrieving content that they will reuse, adapt or modify as needed, without economic barriers or copyright restrictions. This paper reviews key literature on OER and ROER, in order to understand the roles ROER are said or supposed to fulfil in relation to furthering the aims of the OER movement. Four themes which should shape repository design are identified, and the following 10 quality indicators (QI) for ROER effectiveness are discussed: featured resources; user evaluation tools; peer review; authorship of the resources; keywords of the resources; use of standardised metadata; multilingualism of the repositories; inclusion of social media tools; specification of the creative commons license; availability of the source code or original files. These QI form the basis of a method for the evaluation of ROER initiatives which, in concert with considerations of achievability and long-term sustainability, should assist in enhancement and development.     Measurements of the effect of a magnetic field on the light output and current through an organic light emitting diode made with deuterated aluminium tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) have shown that hyperfine coupling with protons is not the cause of the intrinsic organic magnetoresistance.     Hyper-resistivity to global-superconductivity transition by annealing in quench-condensed Pb films

    The rapid rise in resistance occurring in barely conducting quench-condensed Pb films cooled through temperatures characteristic of the bulk superconducting transition is found to be strongly current dependent, the resistance increasing rapidly with decreasing current and temperature. Annealing the same film at temperatures below 40 K changes the behavior to that of a conventional superconductor with resistance that drops as the film current and temperature decrease. Experimental evidence suggests this results from a transition from quasiparticle-dominated to Josephson-dominated tunneling

    Contact pressure prediction in sheet metal forming using finite element analysis

    Tool wear has become a significant issue associated with the forming of high strength sheet steels in the automotive industry. In order to combat this problem, recent research has been devoted to utilizing the contact results obtained from current sheet metal forming software predictions, in order to develop/apply tool wear models or tool material selection criteria for use in the stamping plant. This investigation aims to determine whether a specialized sheet metal forming software package can correctly capture the complex contact conditions that occur during a typical sheet metal stamping process. The contact pressure at the die radius was compared to results obtained using a general-purpose finite element software package, for a simple channel-forming process. Although some qualitative similarities between the two predictions were observed, it was found that significant differences in the magnitude and distribution of the contact pressure exists. The reasons for the discrepancies in results are discussed with respect to the simplifications and assumptions adopted in the finite element model definitions, and with regards to other results available in the literature.<br /

    Improved grazing management practices in the catchments of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia: Does climate variability influence their adoption by landholders?

    The declining health of the Great Barrier Reef from diffuse source pollutants has resulted in substantial policy attention on increasing the adoption of improved management practices by agricultural producers. Although economic modelling indicates that many improved management practices are financially rewarding, landholders with dated management practices remain hesitant to change. This research involved bio-economic modelling to understand the variance in private returns for grazing enterprises across a climate cycle. Results show that financial returns to landholders can vary substantially across different 20-year periods of a climate cycle, demonstrating that the variability in expected returns may be an important reason why landholders are cautious about changing their management practices. Although previous research has separately identified financial returns and attitudes to risk and uncertainty of landholders as key influences on decisions concerning adoption of improved management practices, this research demonstrates that it is the interaction between these factors that is important to understand when designing policy settings. © Australian Rangeland Society

    Development of material models to predict the crashworthiness of tubes

    Metallic tubes have been extensively studied for their crashworthiness as they closely resemble automotive crash rails. Recently, the demand to produce light weight yet safer vehicles has led to the need to understand the behaviour of novel materials such as composites, metallic foams and sandwich structures durign a crash. This paper presents a method to predict the crashworthiness of structural components using material modes. The material factors that most affect the crushing response are determined and quantified by developing and validating the crushing of a square tube model in Abaqus. The inputs from the model are used to construct a simple, physically realistic constitutive model and new test methods for predicting the material behaviour at high strain rates using low test speeds. These material models enable a designer to predict the crash behaviour of a structure without the need to perform extensive physical tests, thus reducing the time and cost of development

    Effects of temperature in relation to sheet metal stamping

    The demand to reduce the use of lubricants and increase tool life in sheet metal stamping has resulted in increased research on the sliding contact between the tool and the sheet materials. Unlubricated sliding wear tests for soft carbon steel sliding on D2 tool steel were performed using a pin-on-disk tribometer. The results revealed that temperature has an influencing role in the wear of tool steel and that material transfer between tool and sheet can be minimized at a certain temperature range in sheet metal stamping
