Aim To investigate, firstly, research priorities for people with periodontitis and those with periodontitis and diabetes. Secondary aims were to explore disease self-management barriers, difficulties and enhancers for people with periodontitis and/or diabetes, mutual learning in patient groups regarding self-care and views of academic researchers on patient-derived research prioritisation. Materials and methods Research prioritisation and self-care management was based on the James Lind Alliance workshop methodology. Participants generated and ranked research priorities and enhancers and barriers to self-care management. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken to explore the views of academic staff about patient and public involvement (PPI) and the findings from this research. Results Periodontitis patients ranked preventive educational interventions highest, whereas the top priority for those with both periodontitis and diabetes was increasing public awareness about periodontitis and systemic health links. Regarding self-care, both periodontitis and diabetes groups highly ranked the importance of being able to self-assess their condition and efficacy of management. Important barriers for the diabetes patients were psychological issues, while for periodontitis patients, the main barrier was receiving conflicting or lacking information. Both groups reported that shared learning helped to develop a better understanding of their conditions and improved management. Academics believed it was essential to involve patients in developing research and most felt the findings would influence their institutions' research priorities; however, they would not change their own research only based on patients' perspectives. Conclusions The workshops led to new insights for research priorities and approaches for health self-management. PPI should be further investigated across oral health applications

Vibrational dynamics of fullerene molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces studied with synchrotron infrared radiation

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy of chemisorbed C60 on Ag (111), Au (110) and Cu (100) reveals that a non-IR-active mode becomes active upon adsorption, and that its frequency shifts proportionally with the charge transferred from the metal to the molecule by about 5 cm−1 per electron. The temperature dependence of the frequency and the width of this IR feature have also been followed for C60/Cu (100) and were found to agree well with a weak anharmonic coupling (dephasing) to a low-frequency mode, which we suggest to be the frustrated translational mode of the adsorbed molecules. Additionally, the adsorption is accompanied by a broad-band reflectance change, which is interpreted as due to the scattering of conduction electrons of the metal surface by the adsorbate. The reflectance change allows determination of the friction coefficient of the C60 molecules, which results in rather small values (∼2×10^9 s−1 for Ag and Au, and ∼1.6×10^9 s−1 for Cu), consistent with a marked metallic character of the adsorbed molecules. Pre-dosing of alkali atoms onto the metal substrates drastically changes the IR spectra recorded during subsequent C60 deposition: anti-absorption bands, as well as an increase of the broadband reflectance, occur and are interpreted as due to strong electron–phonon coupling with induced surface states.

Background: The aim of this study is to examine the knowledge of human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected female adolescents attending Antenatal OPD in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Government Medical College, Miraj, Maharashtra, India. Methods: Subjects were recruited randomly from OPD attending patients.  A total of 30 subjects, 15 HIV-infected and 15 HIV-uninfected were selected via randomization and completed a measure of HPV knowledge, based on a previously validated instrument. The study took place in December 2017.Results: The overall mean score on the measure for all subjects was 43.3% (S.D. 10.9). There was no significant difference in HPV knowledge between the HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected groups. Based on results from a previous large-scale study using the same validated measure, this sample scored significantly worse on general HPV knowledge than samples from the other studies. Conclusions: Given the limited knowledge of HPV in this sample, there is greater need for education about the prevention of cervical cancer, specifically among high-risk adolescent women

Multilingual Android based application for Meteorological Units Conversions and Calculation of empirical relationship.

Meteorological data can be expressed in several units. Various climatological and physical parameters are used for calculating evapotranpiration, irrigation demand, soil moisture etc. from meteorological data. Some of these data are directly measured in weather stations. Other parameters are related to commonly measured data on field and can be derived with the help of a direct or empirical relationship. Many a times on field and on time calculation or conversion are required. Android is a mobile based, free of cost operating system; used by majority of the mobile manufactures and equally appreciated and used by handheld users. Person working on field collects data and an android mobile based multilingual converter and calculator can assist in solving major issues pertaining to on field and on time conversions and calculation in regional language. Znaczna poprawa kliniczna u chorego z niewydolnością serca i zespołem obturacyjnego bezdechu sennego po właściwym ustaleniu stałego, dodatniego ciśnienia w drogach oddechowych

Zaburzenia oddychania w czasie snu często towarzyszą niewydolności krążenia i mogą przybierać postać zespołu obturacyjnego i ośrodkowego bezdechu sennego. Pneumonol. Alergol. Pol. 2011; 79, 1: 48-51Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is frequently present in heart failure (HF), and it may take the form of obstructive (OSA) and central (CSA) sleep apnea. The use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients with OSA and HF is associated with an improved neuroendocrine profile and cardiac function. The degree of upper airway obstruction and the airway closing pressure (and the PAP pressure used to relieve it) may all be highly variable in a setting of uncontrolled HF, mostly due to variable airway oedema. We present a case of a man with HF whose cardiac symptoms radically improved after adequate treatment of his OSA with an auto-adjusting PAP device. Pneumonol. Alergol. Pol. 2011; 79, 1: 48-5

Renal arteriovenous malformation presenting with massive hematuria

AbstractRenal arteriovenous malformations are abnormal communications between the intrarenal arterial and venous systems. They are a rare cause of hematuria. Color Doppler ultrasonography, multislice CT angiography, and DSA are important tools for making the diagnosis. We describe the case of a 62-year-old man with renal arteriovenous malformation who presented with gross hematuria

Cancer is a leading cause of death. Rubia cordifolia is a traditional ayurvedic medicine being used as a remedy for various ailments. Dichloromethane fraction of Rubia cordifolia extract exhibited potent inhibition of human leukaemia cell line and human histolytic lymphoma cell line while was found to be lesser active against normal human kidney cells displaying safety for normal cells. Rubia cordifolia can be a source of potent pharmacophore for treatment of disease like cancer. Keywords: Rubia cordifolia; Cell line; Anticance
