RAPID WEBGIS DEVELOPMENT FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
The use of spatial data during emergency response and management helps to make faster and better decisions. Moreover spatial data should be as much updated as possible and easy to access. To face the challenge of rapid and updated data sharing the most efficient solution is largely considered the use of internet where the field of web mapping is constantly evolving. ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action) is a non profit association founded by Politecnico di Torino and SITI (Higher Institute for the Environmental Systems) as a joint project with the WFP (World Food Programme). The collaboration with the WFP drives some projects related to Early Warning Systems (i.e. flood and drought monitoring) and Early Impact Systems (e.g. rapid mapping and assessment through remote sensing systems). The Web GIS team has built and is continuously improving a complex architecture based entirely on Open Source tools. This architecture is composed by three main areas: the database environment, the server side logic and the client side logic. Each of them is implemented respecting the MCV (Model Controller View) pattern which means the separation of the different logic layers (database interaction, business logic and presentation). The MCV architecture allows to easily and fast build a Web GIS application for data viewing and exploration. In case of emergency data publication can be performed almost immediately as soon as data production is completed. The server side system is based on Python language and Django web development framework, while the client side on OpenLayers, GeoExt and Ext.js that manage data retrieval and user interface. The MCV pattern applied to javascript allows to keep the interface generation and data retrieval logic separated from the general application configuration, thus the server side environment can take care of the generation of the configuration file. The web application building process is data driven and can be considered as a view of the current architecture composed by data and data interaction tools. A near-infrared survey for Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars
Initial results, techniques, and rationale for a near-infrared survey of
evolved emission-line stars toward the Galactic Center are presented. We use
images taken through narrow-band emission-line and continuum filters to select
candidates for spectroscopic follow-up. The filters are optimized for the
detection of Wolf-Rayet stars and other objects which exhibit emission-lines in
the 2 micron region. Approximately three square degrees along the Galactic
plane have been analyzed in seven narrow-filters (four emission-lines and three
continuum). Four new Wolf-Rayet stars have been found which are the subject of

Cu-catalyzed Si-NWS grown on “carbon paper” as anodes for Li-ion cells
The very high theoretical capacity of the silicon (4200mAh/g more than 10 times larger than graphite), environmental-friendly, abundant and low-cost, makes it a potential candidate to replace graphite in high energy density Li-ion batteries. As a drawback, silicon suffers from huge volume changes (300%) on alloying and dealloying with Li, leading a structural deformation that induces disruption. The use of nanostructured silicon materials has been shown to be an effective way to avoid this mechanical degradation of the active material. In this paper the synthesis of silicon nanowires, grown on a highly porous 3D-like carbon paper substrate by CVD using Cu as the catalyst, is presented. The use of carbon paper allows to achieve remarkable loadings of active material (2-5 mg/cm2) and, consequently, high capacity densities. The silicon electrode was investigated both morphologically and electrochemically. To improve the electrochemical performance various strategies have been carried out. It was observed that a very slow first cycle (C/40), which helps the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase on the silicon surface, improves the performance of the cells; nevertheless, their cycle life has been found not fully satisfactory. Morphological analysis of the Si-NWs electrodes before and after cycling showed the presence of a dense silicon layer below the nanowires which could reduce the electrical contact between the active material and the substrate
Wolf-Rayet nebulae as tracers of stellar ionizing fluxes: I. M1-67
We use WR124 (WN8h) and its associated nebula M1-67, to test theoretical
non-LTE models for Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. Lyman continuum ionizing flux
distributions derived from a stellar analysis of WR124, are compared with
nebular properties via photo-ionization modelling. Our study demonstrates the
significant role that line blanketing plays in affecting the Lyman ionizing
energy distribution of WR stars, of particular relevance to the study of HII
regions containing young stellar populations.
We confirm previous results that non-line blanketed WR energy distributions
fail to explain the observed nebular properties of M1-67, such that the
predicted ionizing spectrum is too hard. A line blanketed analysis of WR124 is
carried out using the method of Hillier & Miller (1998), with stellar
properties in accord with previous results, except that the inclusion of
clumping in the stellar wind reduces its wind performance factor to only
approx2. The ionizing spectrum of the line blanketed model is much softer than
for a comparable temperature unblanketed case, such that negligible flux is
emitted with energy above the HeI 504 edge. Photo-ionization modelling,
incorporating the observed radial density distribution for M1-67 reveals
excellent agreement with the observed nebular electron temperature, ionization
balance and line strengths. An alternative stellar model of WR124 is
calculated, following the technique of de Koter et al. (1997), augmented to
include line blanketing following Schmutz et al. (1991). Good consistency is
reached regarding the stellar properties of WR124, but agreement with the
nebular properties of M1-67 is somewhat poorer than for the Hillier & Miller

Mapping a Homopolymer onto a Model Fluid
We describe a linear homopolymer using a Grand Canonical ensemble formalism,
a statistical representation that is very convenient for formal manipulations.
We investigate the properties of a system where only next neighbor interactions
and an external, confining, field are present, and then show how a general pair
interaction can be introduced perturbatively, making use of a Mayer expansion.
Through a diagrammatic analysis, we shall show how constitutive equations
derived for the polymeric system are equivalent to the Ornstein-Zernike and
P.Y. equations for a simple fluid, and find the implications of such a mapping
for the simple situation of Van der Waals mean field model for the fluid.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Mean Field and the Single Homopolymer
We develop a statistical model for a confined chain molecule based on a
monomer grand canonical ensemble. The molecule is subject to an external
chemical potential, a backbone interaction, and an attractive interaction
between all monomers. Using a Gaussian variable formalism and a mean field
approximation, we analytically derive a minimum principle from which we can
obtain relevant physical quantities, such as the monomer density, and we
explore the limit in which the chain is subject to a tight confinement. Through
a numerical implementation of the minimization process we show how we can
obtain density profiles in three dimensions for arbitraty potentials, and we

Su repentina popularidad –aun entre los más escĂ©pticos– ha sido el resultado de buscar una respuesta a las necesidades de los pacientes, que se han encontrado bruscamente sin atenciĂłn dermatolĂłgica presencial tanto en lo privado como en lo pĂşblico. Incluso aquellos servicios que incluĂan la modalidad asĂncrona tuvieron que generar sistemas que permitieran la atenciĂłn directa (direct-to-consumer) entre el especialista y el paciente. El siguiente artĂculo propone algunas maneras prácticas de implementaciĂłn segura para agilizar y optimizar las consultas dermatolĂłgicas, aplicables no solamente a tiempos de pandemia.The use and acceptance of teledermatology increased more in the last 2 months of the recent lockdown owing to coronavirus disease 2019 than in the preceding 20 years. This sudden popularity –even among the greatest skeptics– was driven by the need to offer solutions to patients in both public and private settings who suddenly found themselves unable to access in-person dermatological care. Even departments already offering an asynchronous, store-and-forward teledermatology service were obliged to create new systems to support direct interaction between specialists and patients (the direct-to-consumer model). This article suggests some practical ways to implement TD safely and to expedite and optimize teleconsultations; these ideas are not just applicable to a pandemic situation
Elevated cerebral spinal fluid biomarkers in children with mucopolysaccharidosis I-H.
Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type-IH is a lysosomal storage disease that results from mutations in the IDUA gene causing the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Historically, children with the severe phenotype, MPS-IH (Hurler syndrome) develop progressive neurodegeneration with death in the first decade due to cardio-pulmonary complications. New data suggest that inflammation may play a role in MPS pathophysiology. To date there is almost no information on the pathophysiologic changes within the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) of these patients. We evaluated the CSF of 25 consecutive patients with MPS-IH. While CSF glucose and total protein were within the normal range, we found a significantly mean elevated CSF opening pressure at 24 cm H2O (range 14-37 cm H2O). We observed a 3-fold elevation in CSF heparan sulfate and a 3-8 fold increase in MPS-IH specific non-reducing ends, I0S0 and I0S6. Cytokine analyses in CSF of children with MPS-IH showed significantly elevated inflammatory markers including: MCP-1 SDF-1a, IL-Ra, MIP-1b, IL-8, and VEGF in comparison to unaffected children. This is the largest report of CSF characteristics in children with MPS-IH. Identification of key biomarkers may provide further insight into the inflammatory-mediated mechanisms related to MPS diseases and perhaps lead to improved targeted therapies
The HI content of the recently discovered field dwarf galaxy APPLES1
We present observations in a search for neutral hydrogen associated with the
recently detected field dwarf galaxy APPLES1, performed with the Parkes
radiotelescope. The observed radio spectrum shows no evident (> 3sigma rms)
line emission indicating an upper limit for the HI content of the galaxy of ~
10E6 solar masses and providing an upper value for the M(HI)/L(B) ratio equal
to 2.4 solar masses/solar luminosities. The low value of the HI content
suggested by the observations, together with the galaxy optical morphology,
might indicate that APPLES1 is a dwarf spheroidal. This indication is in
contrast with the evidence of recent star formation, which is typical for dwarf
irregular galaxies. This may suggest that APPLES1 belongs to the class of mixed
dwarf irregular/spheroidal transition-type galaxies. We also conclude that the
relatively low neutral gas mass in APPLES1 can be explained by an extended and
inefficient star formation process, without the need for a dramatic event such
as enhanced star formation or a past encounter with a massive galaxy or galaxy
