    Long-term variations in abundance and distribution of sulfuric acid vapor in the Venus atmosphere inferred from Pioneer Venus and Magellan radio occultation studies

    Radio occultation experiments have been used to study various properties of planetary atmospheres, including pressure and temperature profiles, and the abundance profiles of absorbing constituents in those planetary atmospheres. However, the reduction of amplitude data from such experiments to determine abundance profiles requires the application of the inverse Abel transform (IAT) and numerical differentiation of experimental data. These two operations preferentially amplify measurement errors above the true signal underlying the data. A new technique for processing radio occultation data has been developed that greatly reduces the errors in the derived absorptivity and abundance profiles. This technique has been applied to datasets acquired from Pioneer Venus Orbiter radio occultation studies and more recently to experiments conducted with the Magellan spacecraft. While primarily designed for radar studies of the Venus surface, the high radiated power (EIRP) from the Magellan spacecraft makes it an ideal transmitter for measuring the refractivity and absorptivity of the Venus atmosphere by such experiments. The longevity of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter has made it possible to study long-term changes in the abundance and distribution of sulfuric acid vapor, H2SO4(g), in the Venus atmosphere between 1979 and 1992. The abundance of H2SO4(g) can be inferred from vertical profiles of 13-cm absorptivity profiles retrieved from radio occultation experiments. Data from 1979 and 1986-87 suggest that the abundance of H2SO4(g) at latitudes northward of 70 deg decreased over this time period. This change may be due to a period of active volcanism in the late 1970s followed by a relative quiescent period, or some other dynamic process in the Venus atmosphere. While the cause is not certain, such changes must be incorporated into dynamic models of the Venus atmosphere. Potentially, the Magellan spacecraft will extend the results of Pioneer Venus Orbiter and allow the continued monitoring of the abundance of distribution of H2SO4(g) in the Venus atmosphere, as well as other interesting atmospheric properties. Without such measurements it will be difficult to address other issues such as the short-term spatial variability of the abundance of H2SO4(g) at similar latitudes in Venus atmosphere, and the identities of particles responsible for large-scale variations observed in NIR images

    Sociological Knowledge and Transformation at ‘Diversity University’, UK

    This chapter is based on a case study of one UK university sociology department and shows how sociology knowledge can transform the lives of ‘non-traditional’ students. The research from which the case is drawn focused on four departments teaching sociology-related subjects in universities positioned differently in UK league tables. It explored the question of the relationship between university reputation, pedagogic quality and curriculum knowledge, challenging taken-for-granted judgements about ‘quality’ and in conceptualising ‘just’ university pedagogy by taking Basil Bernstein’s ideas about how ‘powerful’ knowledge is distributed in society to illuminate pedagogy and curriculum. The project took the view that ‘power’ lies in the acquisition of specific (inter)disciplinary knowledges which allows the formation of disciplinary identities by way of developing the means to think about and act in the world in specific ways. We chose to focus on sociology because (1) university sociology is taken up by all socio-economic classes in the UK and is increasingly taught in courses in which the discipline is applied to practice; (2) it is a discipline that historically pursues social and moral ambition which assists exploration of the contribution of pedagogic quality to individuals and society beyond economic goals; (3) the researchers teach and research sociology or sociology of education - an understanding of the subjects under discussion is essential to make judgements about quality. ‘Diversity’ was one of four case study universities. It ranks low in university league tables; is located in a large, multi-cultural English inner city; and, its students are likely to come from lower socio-economic and/or ethnic minority groups, as well as being the first in their families to attend university. To make a case for transformative teaching at Diversity, the chapter draws on longitudinal interviews with students, interviews with tutors, curriculum documents, recordings of teaching, examples of student work, and a survey. It establishes what we can learn from the case of sociology at Diversity, arguing that equality, quality and transformation for individuals and society are served by a university curriculum which is research led and challenging combined with pedagogical practices which give access to difficult-to-acquire and powerful knowledge

    Revealing the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium with OVI Absorption

    Hydrodynamic simulations of growth of cosmic structure suggest that 30-50% of the total baryons at z=0 may be in a warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) with temperatures ~10^5-10^7K. The O VI \lambda \lambda 1032, 1038 absorption line doublet in the FUV portion of QSO spectra provides an important probe of this gas. Utilizing recent hydrodynamic simulations, it is found that there should be ~5 O VI absorption lines per unit redshift with equivalent widths >= 35 mA, decreasing rapidly to ~0.5 per unit redshift at >= 350 mA. About 10% of the total baryonic matter or 20-30% of the WHIM is expected to be in the O VI absorption line systems with equivalent width >= 20 mA; the remaining WHIM gas may be too hot or have too low metallicity to be detected in O VI. We find that the simulation results agree well with observations with regard to the line abundance and total mass contained in these systems. Some of the O VI systems are collisionally ionized and some are photoionized, but most of the mass is in the collisionally ionized systems. We show that the gas that produces the O VI absorption lines does not reside in virialized regions such as galaxies, groups, or clusters of galaxies, but rather has an overdensity of 10-40 times the average density. These regions form a somewhat connected network of filaments.     Universal velocity distributions in an experimental granular fluid

    We present experimental results on the velocity statistics of a uniformly heated granular fluid, in a quasi-2D configuration. We find the base state, as measured by the single particle velocity distribution f(c)f(c), to be universal over a wide range of filling fractions and only weakly dependent on all other system parameters. There is a consistent overpopulation in the distribution's tails, which scale as fexp(const.×c3/2)f\propto\exp(\mathrm{const.}\times c^{-3/2}). More importantly, the high probability central region of f(c)f(c), at low velocities, deviates from a Maxwell-Boltzmann by a second order Sonine polynomial with a single adjustable parameter, in agreement with recent theoretical analysis of inelastic hard spheres driven by a stochastic thermostat. In addition, the user can process the measured data from the same computer terminal used for range control. The design of the laser metrology system was completed. It provides precise measruement of probe location during near-field measurements as well as position data for control of the translation beam and probe cart.     The Decay D0Kˉ0πe+νeD^0\to \bar K^{*0} \pi^- e^+ \nu_e in the Context of Chiral Perturbation Theory

    We study the decay D0Kˉ0πe+νeD^0\rightarrow \bar K^{*0} \pi^- e^+ \nu_e, using SU(2)LSU(2)RSU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R chiral perturbation theory for heavy charmed mesons and vector mesons, in the kinematic regime where pMpπ/mMp_M \cdot p_\pi/m_M (here M=D0M = D^0 or Kˉ0\bar K^{*0}) is much smaller than the chiral symmetry breaking scale, ΛχSB\Lambda_{\chi SB} ( ΛχSB\Lambda_{\chi SB} \sim 1 GeV). We present the leading diagrams and amplitude, and calculate the rate, in the region where, to leading order in our calculations, the Kˉ0\bar K^{*0} is at zero recoil in the D0D^0 rest frame. The rate thus calculated is given in terms of a known form factor and depends on the DDπDD^* \pi coupling constant gDg_D of the heavy (charmed) meson chiral perturbation theory Lagrangian. A measurement of the above decay, in the aforementioned kinematic regime, can result in the extraction of an experimental value for gDg_D, accurate at the level of our approximations, and give us a measure of the validity of approaches based on chiral perturbation theory in studying similar processes.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, 2 embedded postscript figure
