The BaBar Calorimeter Light Pulser System
To make precision measurements with a CsI(Tl) calorimeter in a high
luminosity environment requires that the crystals are well calibrated and
continually monitored for radiation damage. This should not effect the total
integrated luminosity which is particularly important for the \babar
calorimeter to enable it to make CP violation measurements in the meson
system. To achieve this goal a fibre-optic light pulser system was designed
using xenon flash lamps as the light source. A novel light distribution method
was developed using an array of graded index microlenses. Some initial results

In this paper, based on the predictive processing approach to cognition, an enactive theory of need satisfaction is discussed. The theory can be seen as a first step towards a computational cognitive model of need satisfaction
The spatio-temporal spectrum of turbulent flows
Identification and extraction of vortical structures and of waves in a
disorganised flow is a mayor challenge in the study of turbulence. We present a
study of the spatio-temporal behavior of turbulent flows in the presence of
different restitutive forces. We show how to compute and analyse the
spatio-temporal spectrum from data stemming from numerical simulations and from
laboratory experiments. Four cases are considered: homogeneous and isotropic
turbulence, rotating turbulence, stratified turbulence, and water wave
turbulence. For homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, the spectrum allows
identification of sweeping by the large scale flow. For rotating and for
stratified turbulence, the spectrum allows identification of the waves, precise
quantification of the energy in the waves and in the turbulent eddies, and
identification of physical mechanisms such as Doppler shift and wave absorption
in critical layers. Finally, in water wave turbulence the spectrum shows a
transition from gravity-capillary waves to bound waves as the amplitude of the

The nature of 1WGA J1958.2+3232: a new intermediate polar
We present low and intermediate resolution spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to the recently discovered pulsating X-ray source 1WGA J1958.2+3232. The presence of strong HI , HeI and HeII emission lines together with the absence of absorption features rules out the possibility that the object is a massive star, as had recently been suggested. The observed X-ray and optical characteristics are consistent with the object being an intermediate polar. The double-peaked structure of the emission lines indicates that an accretion disc is present

An Annotated Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of Texas, with Keys to Identification of Species
Forty-five families and 247 species of fishes are known to inhabit the freshwaters of Texas. We report on the distribution and status of these fishes and provide a key to their identification. Of the native fishes originally found in Texas, five taxa, Notropis orca (phantom shiner), Notropis simus simus (Rio Grande bluntnose shiner), Cyprinella lutrensis blairi (Maravillas red shiner), Gambusia amistadensis (Amistad gambusia) and Gambusia georgei (San Marcos gambusia) are apparently extinct, and three, Oncorhynchus clarki virginalis (Rio Grande cutthroat trout), Hybognathus amarus (Rio Grande silvery minnow) and Gambusia senilis (blotched gambusia) appear to be extirpated from the state. More than 20 percent of the remaining primary freshwater species appear to be in some need of protection.Integrative Biolog
The threatened status of restricted-range coral reef fish species
Coral reefs are the most diverse ecosystem in the sea. Throughout the world they are being overfished, polluted and destroyed, placing biodiversity at risk. To date, much of the concern over biodiversity loss has centred on local losses and the possibility of global extinction has largely been discounted. However, recent research has shown that 24% of reef fish species have restricted ranges (< 800 000 km(2)), with 9% highly restricted (< 50 000 km(2)). Restricted-range species are thought to face a greater risk of extinction than more widespread species since local impacts could cause global loss. We searched for information on status in the wild and characteristics of 397 restricted-range reef fish species. Fish body size, habitat requirements and usefulness to people were compared with those of a taxonomically-matched sample of more widespread species. We found that on average species with restricted ranges were significantly smaller (mean total length 19.1 cm versus 24.4 cm), tended to have narrower habitat requirements and were less used by people. Greater habitat specificity will tend to increase extinction risk while, if real, more limited usefulness (equivalent to exploitation) may reduce risk. Fifty-eight percent of restricted-range species were considered common/abundant in the wild and 42% uncommon/rare. Population status and threats to 319 species for which data were available were assessed according to the categories and criteria of the IUCN red list of threatened animals. A number of species were found to be rare, were exploited and had highly restricted ranges overlapping areas where reef degradation is particularly severe, placing them at a high risk of extinction. Five species were listed as Critically Endangered, two of them possibly already extinct in the wild, one as Endangered and 172 as Vulnerable. A further 126 species fell into Lower Risk categories and 11 were considered Data Deficient. Given the intensity of impacts to reefs, the broad geographical areas affected and the large numbers of restricted-range species, global extinctions seem likely.
