On the energy efficiency of NOMA for wireless backhaul in multi-tier heterogeneous CRAN
This paper addresses the problem of wireless backhaul in a multi-tier heterogeneous cellular network coordinated by a cloud-based central station (CCS), namely heterogeneous cloud radio access network (HCRAN). A non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is adopted in the power domain for improved spectral efficiency and network throughput of the wireless downlink in the HCRAN. We first develop a power allocation for multiple cells of different tiers taking account of the practical power consumption of different cell types and wireless backhaul. By analysing the energy efficiency (EE) of the NOMA for the practical HCRAN downlink, we show that the power available at the cloud, the propagation environment and cell types have significant impacts on the EE performance. In particular, in a large network, the cells located at the cloud edge are shown to suffer from a very poor performance with a considerably degraded EE, which accordingly motivates us to propose an iteration algorithm for determining the maximal number of cells that can be supported in the HCRAN. The results reveal that a double number of cells can be covered in the urban environment compared to those in the shadowed urban environment and more than 1.5 times of the number of microcells can be deployed over the macrocells, while only a half number of cells can be supported when the distance between them increases threefol
Positive Psychology: The Use of the Framework of Achievement Bests to Facilitate Personal Flourishing
The Framework of Achievement Bests, which was recently published in Educational Psychology Review, makes a theoretical contribution to the study of positive psychology. The Framework of Achievement Bests provides an explanatory account of a person’s optimal best practice from his/her actual best. Another aspect emphasizes on the saliency of the psychological process of optimization, which is central to our understanding of person’s optimal functioning in a subject matter. Achieving an exceptional level of best practice (e.g. achieving excellent grades in mathematics) does not exist in isolation, but rather depends on the potent impact of optimization. This chapter, theoretical in nature, focuses on an in‐depth examination of the expansion of the Framework of Achievement Bests. Our discussion of the Framework of Achievement Bests, reflecting a methodical conceptualization, is benchmarked against another notable theory for understanding, namely: Martin Seligman’s PERMA theory. For example, for consideration, one aspect that we examine entails the extent to which the Framework of Achievement Bests could explain the optimization of each of the five components of PERMA (e.g. how does the Framework of Achievement Bests explain the optimization of engagement?)
Achievement Bests Framework, Cognitive Load Theory, and Equation Solving
The Framework of Achievement Bests provides an explanatory account into the process of optimization, which details how a person reaches from one level of best practice to that of a more optimal level. This framework, we contend, is significant in its explanatory account of personal growth, an internal state of flourishing, and the achievement of exceptionality. This chapter conceptualizes the applicability of the Framework of Achievement Bests to the context of instructional designs. We highlight the tenet of element interactivity, which is integral to the design of a particular mathematics instruction and its potential effectiveness. Element interactivity entails the interaction between elements within a learning material. Owing to the limited working memory capacity, an instruction that incurs high level of element interactivity would impose high cognitive load leading to reduced learning. Our conceptualization postulates the possible alignment between suboptimal and optimal instructional designs with realistic and optimal levels of best practice, respectively. This postulation (e.g., suboptimal instructional design → realistic level of best practice), which recognizes the importance of cognitive load imposition, is significant from a practical point of view. By focusing on instructional designs, it is possible to assist individuals to achieve optimal best practice in learning
Magnetocaloric effect in nano- and polycrystalline manganite
samples were prepared in nano- and polycrystalline
forms by sol-gel and solid state reaction methods, respectively, and
structurally characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The magnetic
properties determined by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements
are discussed. The magnetocaloric effect in this nanocrystalline manganite is
spread over a broader temperature interval than in the polycrystalline case.
The relative cooling power of the poly- and nanocrystalline manganites is used
to evaluate a possible application for magnetic cooling below room temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 5 (double) figures, 1 table, 16 references; submitted to

Detection of lithium in nearby young late-M dwarfs
Late M-type dwarfs in the solar neighborhood include a mixture of very
low-mass stars and brown dwarfs which is difficult to disentangle due to the
lack of constraints on their age such as trigonometric parallax, lithium
detection and space velocity.
We search for young brown dwarf candidates among a sample of 28 nearby late-M
dwarfs with spectral types between M5.0 and M9.0, and we also search for debris
disks around three of them.
Based on theoretical models, we used the color , the -band absolute
magnitude and the detection of the Li I 6708 doublet line as a strong
constraint to estimate masses and ages of our targets. For the search of debris
disks, we observed three targets at submillimeter wavelength of 850 m.
We report here the first clear detections of lithium absorption in four
targets and a marginal detection in one target. Our mass estimates indicate
that two of them are young brown dwarfs, two are young brown dwarf candidates
and one is a young very low-mass star. The closest young field brown dwarf in
our sample at only 15 pc is an excellent benchmark for further studying
physical properties of brown dwarfs in the range 100150 Myr. We did not
detect any debris disks around three late-M dwarfs, and we estimated upper
limits to the dust mass of debris disks around them.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and
