The optical and near-infrared properties of nearby groups of galaxies
We present a study of the optical (BRI) and near-infrared (JHK) luminosity
fuctions (LFs) of the GEMS sample of 60 nearby groups of galaxies between
0<z<0.04, with our optical CCD photometry and near-IR photometry from the 2MASS
survey. The LFs in all filters show a depletion of galaxies of intermediate
luminosity, two magnitudes fainter than L*, within 0.3 R{500} from the centres
of X-ray faint groups. This feature is not as pronounced in X-ray bright
gropus, and vanishes when LFs are found out to R{500}, even in the X-ray dim
groups. We argue that this feature arises due to the enhanced merging of
intermediate-mass galaxies in the dynamically sluggish environment of low
velocity-dispersion groups, indicating that merging is important in galaxy

Weather on Other Worlds. IV. H emission and photometric variability are not correlated in L0T8 dwarfs
Recent photometric studies have revealed that surface spots that produce flux
variations are present on virtually all L and T dwarfs. Their likely magnetic
or dusty nature has been a much-debated problem, the resolution to which has
been hindered by paucity of diagnostic multi-wavelength observations. To test
for a correlation between magnetic activity and photometric variability, we
searched for H emission among eight L3T2 ultra-cool dwarfs with
extensive previous photometric monitoring, some of which are known to be
variable at 3.6 m or 4.5 m. We detected H only in the
non-variable T2 dwarf 2MASS J125453930122474. The remaining seven objects do
not show H emission, even though six of them are known to vary
photometrically. Combining our results with those for 86 other L and T dwarfs
from the literature show that the detection rate of H emission is very
high (94) for spectral types between L0 and L3.5 and much smaller (20)
for spectral types L4, while the detection rate of photometric variability
is approximately constant (3055) from L0 to T8 dwarfs. We conclude
that chromospheric activity, as evidenced by H emission, and
large-amplitude photometric variability are not correlated. Consequently, dust
clouds are the dominant driver of the observed variability of ultra-cool dwarfs

Rotational modulation of the linear polarimetric variability of the cool dwarf TVLM 51346546
Aims: We aimed to monitor the optical linear polarimetric signal of the
magnetized, rapidly rotating M8.5 dwarf TVLM 51346546.
Methods: - and -band linear polarimetry images were collected with the
ALFOSC instrument of the 2.56-m Nordic Optical Telescope on two consecutive
nights covering about 0.5 and 4 rotation cycles in the and filters,
respectively. We also obtained simultaneous intensity curves by means of
differential photometry. The typical precision of the data is 0.46\%
(), 0.35\% () in the linear polarization degree and 9 mmag
(), 1.6 mmag () in the differential intensity curves.
Results: Strong and variable linear polarization is detected in the and
filters, with values of maximum polarization ( = 1.300.35 \%)
similar for both bands. The intensity and the polarimetric curves present a
sinusoid-like pattern with a periodicity of 1.98 h, which we ascribe to
structures in TVLM 51346's surface synchronized with rotation. We found that
the peaks of the intensity and polarimetric curves occur with a phase
difference of 0.180.01, and that the maximum of the linear polarization
happens nearly half a period (0.590.03) after the radio pulse. We
discussed different scenarios to account for the observed properties of the

Simultaneous optical and near-infrared linear spectropolarimetry of the earthshine
Aims: We aim to extend our current observational understanding of the
integrated planet Earth spectropolarimetry from the optical to the
near-infrared wavelengths. Major biomarkers like O and water vapor
are strong flux absorbents in the Earth atmosphere and some linear polarization
of the reflected stellar light is expected to occur at these wavelengths.
Methods: Simultaneous optical ( m) and near-infrared (
m) linear spectropolarimetric data of the earthshine were acquired by
observing the nightside of the waxing Moon. The data have sufficient spectral
resolution (2.51 nm in the optical, and 1.83 and 2.91 nm in the near-infrared)
to resolve major molecular species present in the Earth atmosphere.
Results: We find the highest values of linear polarization () at
the bluest wavelengths, which agrees with the literature. Linear polarization
intensity steadily decreases towards red wavelengths reaching a nearly flat
value beyond 0.8 m. In the near-infrared, we measured a polarization
degree of for the continuum. We report the detection of molecular
features due to O at m and HO at 0.6530.725
m, 0.7800.825 m, 0.93 and 1.12 m in the spectropolarimetric
data; most of them show high linear polarimetry degrees above the continuum. In
particular, the broad HO 1.12 m band displays a polarimetric
intensity as high as that of the blue optical. These features may become a

DichroMatch: a website for similarity searching of circular dichroism spectra
Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a widely used method for examining the structure, folding and conformational changes of proteins. A new online CD analysis server (DichroMatch) has been developed for identifying proteins with similar spectral characteristics by detecting possible structurally and functionally related proteins and homologues. DichroMatch includes six different methods for determining the spectral nearest neighbours to a query protein spectrum and provides metrics of how similar these spectra are and, if corresponding crystal structures are available for the closest matched proteins, information on their secondary structures and fold classifications. By default, DichroMatch uses all the entries in the Protein Circular Dichroism Data Bank (PCDDB) for its comparison set, providing the broadest range of publicly available protein spectra to match with the unknown protein. Alternatively, users can download or create their own specialized data sets, thereby enabling comparisons between the structures of related proteins such as wild-type versus mutants or homologues or a series of spectra of the same protein under different conditions. Challenging the empire
This paper considers how Paul Gilroy transformed hitherto dominant understandings of the relationship between race and class by developing an innovative account that foregrounded questions of racist oppression and collective resistance amid the organic crisis of British capitalism. The returns from this rethinking were profound in that he was able to make transparent both the structuring power of racism within the working class, and the necessity for autonomous black resistance. At the same time, significant lacunae in his account are identified, including the neglect of the episodic emergence of working-class anti-racism and the part played by socialists, particularly those of racialized minority descent in fashioning a major anti-racist social movement. The paper concludes with a lament for the disappearance of such work informed by a ‘Marxism without guarantees’ in the contemporary field of racism studies, and asks readers to consider the gains to be derived from such a re-engagement
Robust interferometer for the routing of light beams carrying orbital angular momentum
We have developed an interferometer requiring only minimal angular alignment for the routing of beams carrying orbital angular momentum. The Mach–Zehnder interferometer contains a Dove prism in each arm where each has a mirror plane around which the transverse phase profile is inverted. One consequence of the inversions is that the interferometer needs no alignment. Instead the interferometer defines a unique axis about which the input beam must be coupled. Experimental results are presented for the fringe contrast, reaching a maximum value of 93±1%
Unsolicited written narratives as a methodological genre in terminal illness: challenges and limitations
Stories about illness have proven invaluable in helping health professionals understand illness experiences. Such narratives have traditionally been solicited by researchers through interviews and the collection of personal writings, including diaries. These approaches are, however, researcher driven; the impetus for the creation of the story comes from the researcher and not the narrator. In recent years there has been exponential growth in illness narratives created by individuals, of their own volition, and made available for others to read in print or as Internet accounts. We sought to determine whether it was possible to identify such material for use as research data to explore the subject of living with the terminal illness amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease—the contention being that these accounts are narrator driven and therefore focus on issues of greatest importance to the affected person. We encountered and sought to overcome a number of methodological and ethical challenges, which is our focus here
Statistical analysis of the owl:sameAs network for aligning concepts in the linking open data cloud
The massively distributed publication of linked data has brought to the attention of scientific community the limitations of classic methods for achieving data integration and the opportunities of pushing the boundaries of the field by experimenting this collective enterprise that is the linking open data cloud. While reusing existing ontologies is the choice of preference, the exploitation of ontology alignments still is a required step for easing the burden of integrating heterogeneous data sets. Alignments, even between the most used vocabularies, is still poorly supported in systems nowadays whereas links between instances are the most widely used means for bridging the gap between different data sets. We provide in this paper an account of our statistical and qualitative analysis of the network of instance level equivalences in the Linking Open Data Cloud (i.e. the sameAs network) in order to automatically compute alignments at the conceptual level. Moreover, we explore the effect of ontological information when adopting classical Jaccard methods to the ontology alignment task. Automating such task will allow in fact to achieve a clearer conceptual description of the data at the cloud level, while improving the level of integration between datasets. <br/
