Facilitation of transmitter release at squid synapses
Facilitation is shown to decay as a compound exponential with two
time constants (T1, T2) at both giant and non-giant synapses in squid steilate ganglia
bathed in solutions having low extracellular calcium concentrations ([Ca++]o).
Maximum values of facilitation (F~) were significantly larger, and T1 was significantly
smaller in giant than non-giant synapses. Decreases in [Ca++]o or increases in
[Mn++]o had variable effects on T1 and F1, whereas decreases in temperature
increased T~ but had insignificant effects on/'1. The growth of facilitation during
short trains of equal interval stimuli was adequately predicted by the linear
summation model developed by Mallart and Martin (1967.J. Physiol. (Lond.). 193:
676-694) for frog neuromuscular junctions. This result suggests that the underlying
mechanisms of facilitation are similar in squid and other synapses which release

Clergy work-related psychological health : listening to the Ministers of Word and Sacrament within the United Reformed Church in England
Drawing on the classic model of balanced affect proposed by Bradburn (The structure of psychological well-being, Aldine, Chicago, IL, 1969), this study conceptualised poor work-related psychological health in terms of high levels of negative affect in the absence of acceptable levels of positive affect. In order to illuminate self-perceptions of work-related psychological health among a well-defined group of clergy, a random sample of 58 ministers of word and sacrament serving within the west midlands synod of the United Reformed Church in England completed an open-ended questionnaire concerned with the following six guiding questions. Do you enjoy your work? How would you define stress? How would you define burnout? What stresses are there in your ministry? What do you do to keep healthy? What can the church do to enhance the work-related psychological health of ministers? Content analysis highlighted the main themes recurring through these open-ended responses. The conclusion is drawn that ministers of word and sacrament within the United Reformed Church in England are exposed to a number of recurrent recognisable sources of stress. Suggestions are advanced regarding the need for future more detailed research and for the development of more effective pastoral strategies
Geographically weighted correspondence matrices for local error reporting and change analyses: mapping the spatial distribution of errors and change
This letter describes and applies generic methods for generating local measures from the correspondence table. These were developed by integrating the functionality of two existing R packages: gwxtab and diffeR. They demonstrate how spatially explicit accuracy and error measures can be generated from local geographically weighted correspondence matrices, for example to compare classified and reference data (predicted and observed) for error analyses, and classes at times t1 and t2 for change analyses. The approaches in this letter extend earlier work that considered the measures derived from correspondence matrices in the context of generalized linear models and probability. Here the methods compute local, geographically weighted correspondence matrices, from which local statistics are directly calculated. In this case a selection of the overall and categorical difference measures proposed by Pontius and Milones (2011) and Pontius and Santacruz (2014), as well as spatially distributed estimates of kappa coefficients, User and Producer accuracies. The discussion reflects on the use of the correspondence matrix in remote sensing research, the philosophical underpinnings of local rather than global approaches for modelling landscape processes and the potential for policy and scientific benefits that local approaches support
The Advantage of Increased Resolution in the Study of Quasar Absorption Systems
We compare a new R = 120,000 spectrum of PG1634+706 (z_QSO = 1.337,m_V =
14.9) obtained with the HDS instrument on Subaru to a R = 45, 000 spectrum
obtained previously with HIRES/Keck. In the strong MgII system at z = 0.9902
and the multiple cloud, weak MgII system at z = 1.0414, we find that at the
higher resolution, additional components are resolved in a blended profile. We
find that two single-cloud weak MgII absorbers were already resolved at R =
45,000, to have b = 2 - 4 km/s. The narrowest line that we measure in the R =
120, 000 spectrum is a component of the Galactic NaI absorption, with b =
0.90+/-0.20 km/s. We discuss expectations of similarly narrow lines in various
applications, including studies of DLAs, the MgI phases of strong MgII
absorbers, and high velocity clouds. By applying Voigt profile fitting to
synthetic lines, we compare the consistency with which line profile parameters
can be accurately recovered at R = 45,000 and R = 120,000. We estimate the
improvement gained from superhigh resolution in resolving narrowly separated
velocity components in absorption profiles. We also explore the influence of
isotope line shifts and hyperfine splitting in measurements of line profile
parameters, and the spectral resolution needed to identify these effects. Super
high resolution spectra of quasars, which will be routinely possible with
20-meter class telescopes, will lead to greater sensitivity for absorption line
surveys, and to determination of more accurate physical conditions for cold

Making meaningful decisions about time, workload and pedagogy in the digital age: the Course Resource Appraisal Model
This article reports on a design-based research project to create a modelling tool to analyse the costs and learning benefits involved in different modes of study. The Course Resource Appraisal Model (CRAM) provides accurate cost-benefit information so that institutions are able to make more meaningful decisions about which kind of courses—online, blended or traditional face-to-face—make sense for them to provide. The tool calculates the difference between expenses and income over three iterations of the course and presents a pedagogical analysis of the learning experience provided. The article draws on a CRAM analysis of the costs and learning benefits of a massive open online course to show how the tool can illuminate the pedagogical and financial viability of a course of this kind
Intense Source of Slow Positrons
We describe a novel design for an intense source of slow positrons based on
pair production with a beam of electrons from a 10 MeV accelerator hitting a
thin target at a low incidence angle. The positrons are collected with a set of
coils adapted to the large production angle. The collection system is designed
to inject the positrons in a Greaves-Surko trap [1]. Such a source could be the
basis for a series of experiments in fundamental and applied research and would
also be a prototype source for industrial applications which concern the field
of defect characterization in the nanometer scale.Comment: submitted to N.I.M.
