    Spectrophotometry with a transmission grating for detecting faint occultations

    High-precision spectrophotometry is highly desirable in detecting and characterizing close-in extrasolar planets to learn about their makeup and temperature. For such a goal, a modest-size telescope with a simple low-resolution spectroscopic instrument is potentially as good or better than a complex general purpose spectrograph since calibration and removal of systematic errors is expected to dominate. We use a transmission grating placed in front of an imaging CCD camera on Steward Observatory's Kuiper 1.5 m telescope to provide a high signal-to-noise, low dispersion visible spectrum of the star HD 209458. We attempt to detect the reflected light signal from the extra-solar planet HD 209458b by differencing the signal just before and after secondary occultation. We present a simple data reduction method and explore the limits of ground based low-dispersion spectrophotometry with a diffraction grating. Reflected light detection levels of 0.1% are achievable for 5000-7000A, too coarse for useful limits on ESPs but potentially useful for determining spectra of short-period binary systems with large (Delta m_vis=6) brightness ratios. Limits on the precison are set by variations in atmospheric seeing in the low-resolution spectrum. Calibration of this effect can be carried out by measurement of atmospheric parameters from the observations themselves, which may allow the precision to be limited by the noise due to photon statistics and atmospheric scintillation effects.Comment: 34 pages and 17 figures.     Mathematical and physical approaches to infer absolute zenith wet delays from double differential interferometric observations using ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis

    Atmospheric water vapor (WV) is one of the driving constituents of the atmosphere. The modelling and forecasting of WV and derived quantities like precipitable water is reliable on regional scales but challenging on small scales because of its high spatial and temporal variation. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) can be exploited to retrieve integrated atmospheric water vapor (IWV) from path delay observations along the radar line of sight. InSAR-derived IWV maps feature a very high spatial resolution but the double-differential interferometric observations only provide changes of IWV between acquisition times and with respect to a certain spatial reference. In this study we present a method to derive the absolute IWV by combining ERA5 numerical weather model data with differential path delay observations from InSAR time series. We propose different functional approaches to merge the regional trend of WV from ERA5 with the high resolution IWV signal from InSAR. We apply this to a Sentinel-1 Persistent Scatterer InSAR time series in the Upper Rhine Graben and validate against IWV observations at GNSS stations of the Upper Rhine Graben Network

    Weak inter-band coupling in Mg10^{10}B2_{2}: a specific heat analysis

    The superconducting state of Mg10^{10}B2_{2} is investigated by specific heat measurements in detail. The specific heat in the normal state is analyzed using a recently developed computer code. This allows for an extraction of the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state with high accuracy and a fair determination of the main lattice features. One of the two investigated samples shows a hump in the specific heat at low temperatures within the superconducting state, accompanied by an unusual low value of the small gap, Δπ(0)=1.32meV\Delta_{\pi}(0)=1.32 meV, pointing to a very weak inter-band coupling. This sample allows for a detailed analysis of the contribution from the π\pi-band to the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state. Therefore the usual analysis method is modified, to include the individual conservation of entropy of both bands. From analyzing the deviation function D(t)D(t) of MgB2_{2}, the theoretically predicted weak inter-band coupling scenario is confirmed.Comment: major revision

    Ingredient selection for plastic composite supports for L-(+)-lactic acid biofilm fermentation by Lactobacillus casei subsp. rhamnosus

    Plastic composite supports containing 50% agricultural products (oat hulls, soybean hulls, yeast extract, soybean flour, dried bovine erythrocytes, bovine albumin, and/or mineral salts) and 50% (wt/wt) polypropylene were produced by high-temperature twin-screw extrusion. The research employed two half sets of a five-factorial fractional design (2(5 - 1)) to evaluate the effects of different agricultural components on the properties of the plastic composite supports and to select the best plastic composite support formulation for lactic acid fermentation. The biofilm population was affected by the contact angle and relative hydrophobicity of the supports (r = 0.79 to 0.82). Lactic acid was produced by the suspended cells (r = 0.96) and the biofilm on the plastic composite support discs (r = 0.85). Incorporation of yeast extract into plastic composite supports enhanced growth of free and attached cells in minimal medium (P \u3c 0.0001). The presence of soybean hulls, yeast extract, or mineral salts in plastic composite supports produced less hydrophobic supports (P \u3c 0.0001) and enhanced cell attachment (P \u3c 0.03). Under all conditions, suspended-cell and polypropylene disc controls gave negligible lactic acid production and cell density. Plastic composite supports containing soybean hulls, yeast extract, soybean flour, bovine albumin, and mineral salts gave the highest biofilm population (2.3 x 10(9) CFU/g of support), cell density (absorbance of 1.8 at 620 nm), and lactic acid concentration (7.6 g/liter) in minimal medium

    An apodizing phase plate coronagraph for VLT/NACO

    We describe a coronagraphic optic for use with CONICA at the VLT that provides suppression of diffraction from 1.8 to 7 lambda/D at 4.05 microns, an optimal wavelength for direct imaging of cool extrasolar planets.     "Better Safe than Sorry" - Individual Risk-free Pension Schemes in the European Union - Macroeconomic Benefits, the Mobile Working Citizen's Perspective and Why Nots

    Variations between the diverse pension systems in the member states of the European Union hamper labour market mobility, across country borders but also within the countries of the European Union. From a macroeconomic perspective, and in the light of demographic pressure, this paper argues that allowing individual instead of collective pension building would greatly improve labour market flexibility and thus enhance the functioning of the monetary union. I argue that working citizens would benefit, for three reasons, from pension saving in a risk-free savings account. First, citizens would have a clear picture of the accumulation of their own pension savings throughout their working life. Second, they would pay hardly any extra costs and, third, once retired they would not be subject to the whims of government or other pension fund managers. This paper investigates the feasibility of individual pension building under various parameter settings by calculating the pension saved during a working life and the pension dis-saved after retirement. The findings show that there are no reasons why the European Union and individual member states should not allow individual risk-free pension savings accounts. This would have macroeconomic benefits and provide a solid pension provision that can enhance mobility, instead of engaging workers in different mandatory collective pension schemes that exist around in the European Union
