Numerical modeling of dynamic powder compaction using the Kawakita equation of state

    Get PDF
Dynamic powder compaction is analyzed using the assumption that the powder behaves, while it is being compacted, like a hydrodynamic fluid in which deviatoric stress and heat conduction effects can be ignored throughout the process. This enables techniques of computational fluid dynamics such the equilibrium flux method to be used as a modeling tool. The equation of state of the powder under compression is assumed to be a modified version of the Kawakita loading curve. Computer simulations using this model are performed for conditions matching as closely as possible with those from experiments by Page and Killen [Powder Metall. 30, 233 (1987)]. The numerical and experimental results are compared and a surprising degree of qualitative agreement is observed

A simple method to combine multiple molecular biomarkers for dichotomous diagnostic classification

BACKGROUND: In spite of the recognized diagnostic potential of biomarkers, the quest for squelching noise and wringing in information from a given set of biomarkers continues. Here, we suggest a statistical algorithm that – assuming each molecular biomarker to be a diagnostic test – enriches the diagnostic performance of an optimized set of independent biomarkers employing established statistical techniques. We validated the proposed algorithm using several simulation datasets in addition to four publicly available real datasets that compared i) subjects having cancer with those without; ii) subjects with two different cancers; iii) subjects with two different types of one cancer; and iv) subjects with same cancer resulting in differential time to metastasis. RESULTS: Our algorithm comprises of three steps: estimating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for each biomarker, identifying a subset of biomarkers using linear regression and combining the chosen biomarkers using linear discriminant function analysis. Combining these established statistical methods that are available in most statistical packages, we observed that the diagnostic accuracy of our approach was 100%, 99.94%, 96.67% and 93.92% for the real datasets used in the study. These estimates were comparable to or better than the ones previously reported using alternative methods. In a synthetic dataset, we also observed that all the biomarkers chosen by our algorithm were indeed truly differentially expressed. CONCLUSION: The proposed algorithm can be used for accurate diagnosis in the setting of dichotomous classification of disease states

Statistical Arbitrage Mining for Display Advertising

We study and formulate arbitrage in display advertising. Real-Time Bidding (RTB) mimics stock spot exchanges and utilises computers to algorithmically buy display ads per impression via a real-time auction. Despite the new automation, the ad markets are still informationally inefficient due to the heavily fragmented marketplaces. Two display impressions with similar or identical effectiveness (e.g., measured by conversion or click-through rates for a targeted audience) may sell for quite different prices at different market segments or pricing schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel data mining paradigm called Statistical Arbitrage Mining (SAM) focusing on mining and exploiting price discrepancies between two pricing schemes. In essence, our SAMer is a meta-bidder that hedges advertisers' risk between CPA (cost per action)-based campaigns and CPM (cost per mille impressions)-based ad inventories; it statistically assesses the potential profit and cost for an incoming CPM bid request against a portfolio of CPA campaigns based on the estimated conversion rate, bid landscape and other statistics learned from historical data. In SAM, (i) functional optimisation is utilised to seek for optimal bidding to maximise the expected arbitrage net profit, and (ii) a portfolio-based risk management solution is leveraged to reallocate bid volume and budget across the set of campaigns to make a risk and return trade-off. We propose to jointly optimise both components in an EM fashion with high efficiency to help the meta-bidder successfully catch the transient statistical arbitrage opportunities in RTB. Both the offline experiments on a real-world large-scale dataset and online A/B tests on a commercial platform demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution in exploiting arbitrage in various model settings and market environments.Comment: In the proceedings of the 21st ACM SIGKDD international conference on Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDD 2015

Theory of NMR as a local probe for the electronic structure in the mixed state of the high-TcT_c cuprates

We argue that nuclear magnetic resonance experiments are a site-sensitive probe for the electronic spectrum in the mixed state of the high-TcT_c cuprates. Within a spin-fermion model, we show that the Doppler-shifted electronic spectrum arising from the circulating supercurrent changes the low-frequency behavior of the imaginary part of the spin-susceptibility. For a hexagonal vortex lattice, we predict that these changes lead to {\it (a)} a unique dependence of the 63^{63}Cu spin lattice relaxation rate, 1/T11/T_1, on resonance frequency, and {\it (b)} a temperature dependence of T1T_1 which varies with frequency. We propose a nuclear quadrupole experiment to study the effects of a uniform supercurrent on the electronic structure and predict that T1T_1 varies with the direction of the supercurrent.Comment: RevTex, 5 pages, 3 figures embedded in the tex

Low temperature superfluid stiffness of d-wave superconductor in a magnetic field

The temperature and field dependence of the superfluid density ρs\rho_s in the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor are calculated using a microscopic model in the quasiclassical approximation. We show that at temperatures below T^{*} \varpropto \sqrt{H}$, the linear T dependence of rho_s crosses over to a T^2 dependence differently from the behavior of the effective penetration depth, lambda_eff^{-2}(T). We point out that the expected dependences could be probed by a mutual-inductance technique experiment.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX4, 2 EPS figures; minor revisions made and 1 new reference added; final version published in PR

Dynamical effects of an unconventional current-phase relation in YBCO dc-SQUIDs

The predominant d-wave pairing symmetry in high temperature superconductors allows for a variety of current-phase relations in Josephson junctions, which is to a certain degree fabrication controlled. In this letter we report on direct experimental observations of the effects of a non-sinusoidal current-phase dependence in YBCO dc-SQUIDs, which agree with the theoretical description of the system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 ps figures, to apprear in Phys.
