Dynamics and genetic structure of Argentine ant supercolonies in their native range.
Some introduced ant populations have an extraordinary social organization, called unicoloniality, whereby individuals mix freely within large supercolonies. We investigated whether this mode of social organization also exists in native populations of the Argentine ant Linepithema humile. Behavioral analyses revealed the presence of 11 supercolonies (width 1 to 515 m) over a 3-km transect. As in the introduced range, there was always strong aggression between but never within supercolonies. The genetic data were in perfect agreement with the behavioral tests, all nests being assigned to identical supercolonies with the different methods. There was strong genetic differentiation between supercolonies but no genetic differentiation among nests within supercolonies. We never found more than a single mitochondrial haplotype per supercolony, further supporting the view that supercolonies are closed breeding units. Genetic and chemical distances between supercolonies were positively correlated, but there were no other significant associations between geographic, genetic, chemical, and behavioral distances. A comparison of supercolonies sampled in 1999 and 2005 revealed a very high turnover, with about one-third of the supercolonies being replaced yearly. This dynamic is likely to involve strong competition between supercolonies and thus act as a potent selective force maintaining unicoloniality over evolutionary time
Porous silicon formation and electropolishing
Electrochemical etching of silicon in hydrofluoride containing electrolytes
leads to pore formation for low and to electropolishing for high applied
current. The transition between pore formation and polishing is accompanied by
a change of the valence of the electrochemical dissolution reaction. The local
etching rate at the interface between the semiconductor and the electrolyte is
determined by the local current density. We model the transport of reactants
and reaction products and thus the current density in both, the semiconductor
and the electrolyte. Basic features of the chemical reaction at the interface
are summarized in law of mass action type boundary conditions for the transport
equations at the interface. We investigate the linear stability of a planar and
flat interface. Upon increasing the current density the stability flips either
through a change of the valence of the dissolution reaction or by a nonlinear

Algebras of Measurements: the logical structure of Quantum Mechanics
In Quantum Physics, a measurement is represented by a projection on some
closed subspace of a Hilbert space. We study algebras of operators that
abstract from the algebra of projections on closed subspaces of a Hilbert
space. The properties of such operators are justified on epistemological
grounds. Commutation of measurements is a central topic of interest. Classical
logical systems may be viewed as measurement algebras in which all measurements

Local Ranking Problem on the BrowseGraph
The "Local Ranking Problem" (LRP) is related to the computation of a
centrality-like rank on a local graph, where the scores of the nodes could
significantly differ from the ones computed on the global graph. Previous work
has studied LRP on the hyperlink graph but never on the BrowseGraph, namely a
graph where nodes are webpages and edges are browsing transitions. Recently,
this graph has received more and more attention in many different tasks such as
ranking, prediction and recommendation. However, a web-server has only the
browsing traffic performed on its pages (local BrowseGraph) and, as a
consequence, the local computation can lead to estimation errors, which hinders
the increasing number of applications in the state of the art. Also, although
the divergence between the local and global ranks has been measured, the
possibility of estimating such divergence using only local knowledge has been
mainly overlooked. These aspects are of great interest for online service
providers who want to: (i) gauge their ability to correctly assess the
importance of their resources only based on their local knowledge, and (ii)
take into account real user browsing fluxes that better capture the actual user
interest than the static hyperlink network. We study the LRP problem on a
BrowseGraph from a large news provider, considering as subgraphs the
aggregations of browsing traces of users coming from different domains. We show
that the distance between rankings can be accurately predicted based only on
structural information of the local graph, being able to achieve an average
rank correlation as high as 0.8
Density of states of helium droplets
Accurate analytical expressions for the state densities of liquid He-4
droplets are derived, incorporating the ripplon and phonon degrees of freedom.
The microcanonical temperature and the ripplon angular momentum level density
are also evaluated. The approach is based on inversions and systematic

A quantitative analysis of measures of quality in science
Condensing the work of any academic scientist into a one-dimensional measure
of scientific quality is a difficult problem. Here, we employ Bayesian
statistics to analyze several different measures of quality. Specifically, we
determine each measure's ability to discriminate between scientific authors.
Using scaling arguments, we demonstrate that the best of these measures require
approximately 50 papers to draw conclusions regarding long term scientific
performance with usefully small statistical uncertainties. Further, the
approach described here permits the value-free (i.e., statistical) comparison

How to identify and recruit nurses to a survey 14 and 24 years after graduation in a context of scarce data: lessons learnt from the 2012 nurses at work pilot study on nurses' career paths.
BACKGROUND: Nursing workforce data are scarce in Switzerland, with no active national registry of nurses. The worldwide nursing shortage is also affecting Switzerland, so that evidence-based results of the nurses at work project on career paths and retention are needed as part of the health care system stewardship; nurses at work is a retrospective cohort study of nurses who graduated in Swiss nursing schools in the last 30 years. Results of the pilot study are presented here (process and feasibility). The objectives are (1) to determine the size and structure of the potential target population by approaching two test-cohorts of nursing graduates (1988 and 1998); (2) to test methods of identifying and reaching them 14 and 24 years after graduation; (3) to compute participation rates, and identify recruitment and participation biases.
METHODS: Graduates' names were retrieved from 26 Swiss nursing schools: 488 nurses from the 1988 cohort and 597 from 1998 were invited to complete a web-based questionnaire. Initial updated addresses (nâ=â278, seed sample) were found using the Swiss Nursing Association member file. In addition, a snowball method was applied for recruitment, where directly-contacted respondents provided additional names of graduate mates or sent them the invitation. The study was further advertized through the main employers, study partners, and a press release.
RESULTS: Participation rate was 26.5% (nâ=â287), higher for the older cohort of 1988 (29.7%, nâ=â145) than for 1998 (15.6%, nâ=â93). Additional nurses (nâ=â363) not belonging to the test cohorts also answered. All schools were represented among respondents. Only 18 respondents (6%) worked outside nursing or not at all. Among respondents, 94% would 'probably' or 'maybe' agree to participate in the main study.
CONCLUSION: The pilot study demonstrated that targeted nurses could be identified and approached. There is an overwhelming interest in the project from them and from policymakers. Recommendations to increase nurses' participation rate for nurses at work include: (1) to open nurses at work recruitment to all nurses in Switzerland, while recreating cohorts post-hoc for relevant analysis; (2) to define a comprehensive communication strategy with special attention to graduate nurses who are harder to reach
Proton Lifetime and Baryon Number Violating Signatures at the LHC in Gauge Extended Models
There exist a number of models in the literature in which the weak
interactions are derived from a chiral gauge theory based on a larger group
than SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y. Such theories can be constructed so as to be
anomaly-free and consistent with precision electroweak measurements, and may be
interpreted as a deconstruction of an extra dimension. They also provide
interesting insights into the issues of flavor and dynamical electroweak
symmetry breaking, and can help to raise the mass of the Higgs boson in
supersymmetric theories. In this work we show that these theories can also give
rise to baryon and lepton number violating processes, such as nucleon decay and
spectacular multijet events at colliders, via the instanton transitions
associated with the extended gauge group. For a particular model based on
SU(2)_1 x SU(2)_2, we find that the violating scattering cross sections
are too small to be observed at the LHC, but that the lower limit on the
lifetime of the proton implies an upper bound on the gauge couplings.Comment: 36 page
