    Phenotypic Effects of an Allele Causing Obligate Parthenogenesis in a Rotifer

    Transitions to obligate asexuality have been documented in almost all metazoan taxa, yet the conditions favoring such transitions remained largely unexplored. We address this problem in the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. In this species, a polymorphism at a single locus, op, can result in transitions to obligate parthenogenesis. Homozygotes for the op allele reproduce strictly by asexual reproduction, whereas heterozygous clones (+/op) and wild-type clones (+/+) are cyclical parthenogens that undergo sexual reproduction at high population densities. Here, we examine dosage effects of the op allele by analyzing various life-history characteristics and population traits in 10 clones for each of the 3 possible genotypes (op/op, +/op, and +/+). For most traits, we found that op/op clones differed significantly (P < 0.05) from the 2 cyclical parthenogenetic genotypes (+/+ and +/op). By contrast, the 2 cyclical parthenogenetic genotypes were almost indistinguishable, except that heterozygote individuals were slightly but significantly smaller in body size compared with wild-type individuals. Overall, this indicates that the op allele is selectively neutral in the heterozygous state. Thus, selective sweeps of this allele in natural populations would first require conditions favoring the generation of homozygotes. This may be given by inbreeding in very small populations or by double mutants in very large populations

    Phytoplankton Community and Algal Toxicity at a Recurring Bloom in Sullivan Bay, Kabetogama Lake, Minnesota, USA

    Kabetogama Lake in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, USA suffers from recurring late summer algal blooms that often contain toxin-producing cyanobacteria. Previous research identified the toxin microcystin in blooms, but we wanted to better understand how the algal and cyanobacterial community changed throughout an open water season and how changes in community structure were related to toxin production. Therefore, we sampled one recurring bloom location throughout the entire open water season. The uniqueness of this study is the absence of urban and agricultural nutrient sources, the remote location, and the collection of samples before any visible blooms were present. Through quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), we discovered that toxin-forming cyanobacteria were present before visible blooms and toxins not previously detected in this region (anatoxin-a and saxitoxin) were present, indicating that sampling for additional toxins and sampling earlier in the season may be necessary to assess ecosystems and human health risk

    Numerical study of surface-induced reorientation and smectic layering in a nematic liquid crystal

    Surface-induced profiles of both nematic and smectic order parameters in a nematic liquid crystal, ranging from an orienting substrate to "infinity", were evaluated numerically on base of an extended Landau theory. In order to obtain a smooth behavior of the solutions at "infinity" a boundary energy functional was derived by linearizing the Landau energy around its equilibrium solutions. We find that the intrinsic wave number of the smectic structure, which plays the role of a coupling between nematic and smectic order, strongly influences the director reorientation. Whereas the smectic order is rapidly decaying when moving away from the surface, the uniaxial nematic order parameter shows an oscillatory behavior close to the substrate, accompanied by a non-zero local biaxiality.Comment: LaTeX, 17 pages, with 4 postscript figure

    Parenting influences on executive functions development during childhood: A review

    El término prácticas de crianza (PC) hace referencia a una serie de comportamientos y manifestaciones afectivas de los progenitores y/o responsables del menor, que se caracterizan por estar orientados principalmente a la socialización y al cuidado del infante. Diversas investigaciones han hallado un vínculo entre las PC y el desarrollo de ciertas habilidades cognitivas y emocionales del niño. Entre ellas destacan las funciones ejecutivas (FE), que conforman un conjunto de procesos cognitivos de orden superior, cuyo desarrollo está fuertemente asociado a la plasticidad cerebral dependiente de la experiencia. El presente artículo constituye una revisión del vínculo hallado entre las PC y el desarrollo de las FE durante la infancia. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar los diferentes diseños utilizados para el estudio de la relación entre ambos constructos, confrontando los resultados de las distintas investigaciones. Se concluye señalando que la diversidad metodológica y operativa de los estudios analizados no permite efectuar una afirmación definitiva respecto del vínculo entre las PC y el desarrollo de FE. Por tal motivo, se plasmarán algunas consideraciones metodológicas que podrían clarificar el vínculo entre ambos constructos.Parenting practices refer to a set of behavioral and emotional manifestations aimed at the socialization and care of children. Several investigations have found relationships between quality of parenting and children’s cognitive and affective development. Among those cognitive processes, the executive functions are strongly associated with brain plasticity which, in turn, is affected by experience. This article is a review of the main links found between parenting practices and the development of executive processes during childhood. The objective of this work is to present different designs used for the study of the relationship between executive functions and parenting practices and to confront their results. It is concluded that the methodological and operational diversity of the analyzed studies does not support a definitive relationship between parenting practices and the development of executive functions.     Poly(hydroxy alkanoate)s in Medical Applications

    This review summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge of the usage of poly(hydroxy alkanoate)s in medical and sanitary applications. Depending on the monomers incorporated into the polymers and copolymers, this class of polymers exhibits a broad range of (thermo-)plastic properties, enabling their processing by, e.g., solution casting or melt extrusion. In this review, strategies for the polymer analogous modification of these materials and their surfaces are highlighted and correlated with the potential applications of the corresponding materials and blends. While the commercial availability of purified PHAs is addressed in brief, special focus is put on the (bio-)degradability of these polymers and ways to influence the degradation mechanism and/or the duration of degradation

    The t W- Mode of Single Top Production

    The t W- mode of single top production is proposed as an important means to study the weak interactions of the top quark. While the rate of this mode is most likely too small to be observed at Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron, it is expected to be considerably larger at the CERN LHC. In this article the inclusive t W- rate is computed, including O(1 / log (m_t^2 / m_b^2)) corrections, and when combined with detailed Monte Carlo simulations including the top and W decay products, indicate that the t W- single top process may be extracted from the considerable t tbar and W+ W- j backgrounds at low luminosity runs of the LHC.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

    Director configuration of planar solitons in nematic liquid crystals

    The director configuration of disclination lines in nematic liquid crystals in the presence of an external magnetic field is evaluated. Our method is a combination of a polynomial expansion for the director and of further analytical approximations which are tested against a numerical shooting method. The results are particularly simple when the elastic constants are equal, but we discuss the general case of elastic anisotropy. The director field is continuous everywhere apart from a straight line segment whose length depends on the value of the magnetic field. This indicates the possibility of an elongated defect core for disclination lines in nematics due to an external magnetic field.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, 8 postscript figure

    Discovery of Extremely Embedded X-ray Sources in the R Coronae Australis Star Forming Core

    With the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories, we detected two extremely embedded X-ray sources in the R Corona Australis (R CrA) star forming core, near IRS 7. These sources, designated as XB and XA, have X-ray absorption columns of ~3e23 cm-2 equivalent to AV ~180 mag. They are associated with the VLA centimeter radio sources 10E and 10W, respectively. XA is the counterpart of the near-infrared source IRS 7, whereas XB has no K-band counterpart above 19.4 mag. This indicates that XB is younger than typical Class I protostars, probably a Class 0 protostar or in an intermediate phase between Class 0 and Class I. The X-ray luminosity of XB varied between 29<log LX <31.2 ergs s-1 on timescales of 3-30 months. XB also showed a monotonic increase in X-ray brightness by a factor of two in 30 ksec during an XMM-Newton observation. The XMM-Newton spectra indicate emission from a hot plasma with kT ~3-4 keV and also show fluorescent emission from cold iron. Though the X-ray spectrum from XB is similar to flare spectra from Class I protostars in luminosity and temperature, the light curve does not resemble the lightcurves of magnetically generated X-ray flares because the variability timescale of XB is too long and because variations in X-ray count rate were not accompanied by variations in spectral hardness. The short-term variation of XB may be caused by the partial blocking of the X-ray plasma, while the month-long flux enhancement may be driven by mass accretion.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, To be published in ApJ in April 200
