    Investment analysts' forecasts of earnings

    The literature on investment analysts' forecasts of firms' earnings and their forecast errors is enormous. This paper summarizes the evidence on the distribution of analysts' forecasts and forecast errors using data for all U.S. firms from 1990 to 2004. The evidence indicates substantial asymmetry of earnings, earning forecasts, and forecast errors. There is strong support for average and median earning forecasts being higher than actual earnings a year before the earnings announcement. Such differences between earnings and forecasts also exist across time periods and industries. A month before the earnings announcement, the mean and median differences are small.Investments ; Forecasting

    We discuss a fast cross-Wigner transform based technique for detecting gravitational wave bursts, and estimating the direction of arrival, using a network of (three) non co-located interferometric detectors. The performances of the detector as a function of signal strength and source location, and the accuracy of the direction of arrival estimation are investigated by numerical simulations.Comment: accepted in Class.     Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric dysbiosis: Can probiotics administration be useful to treat this condition?

    Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is responsible for one of the most common infections in the world. 'e prevalence exceeds 50% of the population in developing countries, and approximately one-third of the adults are colonized in North Europe and North America. It is considered a major pathogenic agent of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, atrophic gastritis, gastric cancer, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALT). Hp colonization modifies the composition of gastric microbiota that could drive the development of gastric disorders. Currently, an emerging problem in Hp treatment is represented by the increasing rate of antimicrobial therapy resistance. In this context, the search for adjuvant agents can be very useful to overcome this issue and probiotics administration can represent a valid option. The aim of this review is to describe the gastric microbiota changes during Hp colonization, the mechanisms of action, and a possible role of probiotics in the treatment of this infection

    Policy implementation under stress: How the Affordable Care Act’s frontline workers cope with the challenges of public service delivery

    Public service delivery in the contemporary American state is becoming increasingly challenging. As the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) shows, new social policies combine high technological and cognitive demands on citizens and government with budget austerity, decentralization and political polarization. Yet, as we argue in this paper, the ACA also shows how frontline workers cope with these challenges by focusing on improving client experiences and policy outcomes. In particular, we consider how non-governmental social-service professionals, critical to contemporary service delivery, cope with high caseloads, legal rigidity, and a lack of policy knowledge on the part of citizens. Variation in coping techniques is consequential; rationing care to deal with large numbers of high-demand clients may lead to poorer service and citizen dissatisfaction. By contrast, techniques like learning and rule bending may actually improve citizens’ experience of policy. To examine patterns of coping in ACA implementation, we present the results of 21 in-depth interviews with navigators, assisters, and Certified Application Counselors in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Across both states, our respondents coped by engaging in instrumental action (learning & collaboration) and rule bending, rather than rationing care, routinizing their work, or rigidly adhering to rules. While these pro-client techniques are both fiscally and organizationally constrained, our interviews reveal that social-service professionals use them even in especially adverse circumstances

    A mathematical model for mechanotransduction at the early steps of suture formation

    Growth and patterning of craniofacial sutures are subjected to the effects of mechanical stress. Mechanotransduction processes occurring at the margins of the sutures are not precisely understood. Here, we propose a simple theoretical model based on the orientation of collagen fibres within the suture in response to local stress. We demonstrate that fibre alignment generates an instability leading to the emergence of interdigitations. We confirm the appearance of this instability both analytically and numerically. To support our model, we use histology and synchrotron x-ray microtomography and reveal the fine structure of fibres within the sutural mesenchyme and their insertion into the bone. Furthermore, using a mouse model with impaired mechanotransduction, we show that the architecture of sutures is disturbed when forces are not interpreted properly. Finally, by studying the structure of sutures in the mouse, the rat, an actinopterygian (\emph{Polypterus bichir}) and a placoderm (\emph{Compagopiscis croucheri}), we show that bone deposition patterns during dermal bone growth are conserved within jawed vertebrates. In total, these results support the role of mechanical constraints in the growth and patterning of craniofacial sutures, a process that was probably effective at the emergence of gnathostomes, and provide new directions for the understanding of normal and pathological suture fusion

    Enhancement of photoacoustic detection of inhomogeneities in polymers

    We report a series of experiments on laser pulsed photoacoustic excitationin turbid polymer samples addressed to evaluate the sound speed in the samples and the presence of inhomogeneities in the bulk. We describe a system which allows the direct measurement of the speed of the detected waves by engraving the surface of the piece under study with a fiduciary pattern of black lines. We also describe how this pattern helps to enhance the sensitivity for the detection of an inhomogeneity in the bulk. These two facts are useful for studies in soft matter systems including, perhaps, biological samples. We have performed an experimental analysis on Grilon(R) samples in different situations and we show the limitations of the method.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
