Superconductivity in the YIr2Si2 and LaIr2Si2 Polymorphs
We report on existence of superconductivity in YIr2Si2 and LaIr2Si2 compounds
in relation to crystal structure. The two compounds crystallize in two
structural polymorphs, both tetragonal. The high temperature polymorph (HTP)
adopts the CaBe2Ge2-structure type (space group P4/nmm) while the low
temperature polymorph (LTP) is of the ThCr2Si2 type (I4/mmm). By studying
polycrystals prepared by arc melting we have observed that the rapidly cooled
samples retain the HTP even at room temperature (RT) and below. Annealing such
samples at 900C followed by slow cooling to RT provides the LTP. Both, the HTP
and LTP were subsequently studied with respect to magnetism and
superconductivity by electrical resistivity, magnetization, AC susceptibility
and specific heat measurements. The HTP and LTP of both compounds respectively,
behave as Pauli paramagnets. Superconductivity has been found exclusively in
the HTP of both compounds below Tsc (= 2.52 K in YIr2Si2 and 1.24 K in
LaIr2Si2). The relations of magnetism and superconductivity with the electronic
and crystal structure are discussed with comparing experimental data with the
results of first principles electronic structure calculations
Visual ecology of aphids – a critical review on the role of colours in host finding
We review the rich literature on behavioural responses of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) to stimuli of different colours. Only in one species there are adequate physiological data on spectral sensitivity to explain behaviour crisply in mechanistic terms.
Because of the great interest in aphid responses to coloured targets from an evolutionary, ecological and applied perspective, there is a substantial need to expand these studies to more species of aphids, and to quantify spectral properties of stimuli rigorously. We show that aphid responses to colours, at least for some species, are likely based on a specific colour opponency mechanism, with positive input from the green domain of the spectrum and negative input from the blue and/or UV region.
We further demonstrate that the usual yellow preference of aphids encountered in field experiments is not a true colour preference but involves additional brightness effects. We discuss the implications for agriculture and sensory ecology, with special respect to the recent debate on autumn leaf colouration. We illustrate that recent evolutionary theories concerning aphid–tree interactions imply far-reaching assumptions on aphid responses to colours
that are not likely to hold. Finally we also discuss the
implications for developing and optimising strategies
of aphid control and monitoring
PIV analysis of near-wake flow patterns of an ice-accreted bridge cable in low and moderately turbulent wind
The study contributes to the explanation of flow behaviour and the basis of phenomena existing during two-dimensional airflow around an ice-accreted cylinder, representing the section model of a bridge cable. The geometrical features and flow characteristics of the near-wake flow patterns of the iced cable were investigated within the Reynolds number range of 2.2·10^4–6.4·10^4 in low and moderately turbulent flow. The experimental procedure was conducted to create ice accretion on the cylindrical model. The shape of the ice was registered using a photogrammetry method. For the aerodynamic investigations the ice-accreted model was reproduced at a smaller scale by means of 3D printing. Representative snapshots of the flow field behind the stationary horizontal simulated iced cable were digitally analyzed by the Particle Image Velocimetry technique. The flow visualization provided quantitative data about the velocity and the direction of flow streams within both the near-wake and the sidewise regions of distributed flow around the model. Evidence of the existence of the vortex excitation process was obtained at three principal angles of attack. The characteristics of the vortex street and the location of the flow boundary layer separation points were recognized. The obtained results were compared with results for a smooth cylinder

Highly synergistic antimicrobial activity of magainin 2 and PGLa peptides is rooted in the formation of supramolecular complexes with lipids
Magainin 2 and PGLa are cationic, amphipathic antimicrobial peptides which when added as equimolar mixture exhibit a pronounced synergism in both their antibacterial and pore-forming activities. Here we show for the first time that the peptides assemble into defined supramolecular structures along the membrane interface. The resulting mesophases are quantitatively described by state-of-the art fluorescence self-quenching and correlation spectroscopies. Notably, the synergistic behavior of magainin 2 and PGLa correlates with the formation of hetero-domains and an order-of-magnitude increased membrane affinity of both peptides. Enhanced membrane association of the peptide mixture is only observed in the presence of phophatidylethanolamines but not of phosphatidylcholines, lipids that dominate bacterial and eukaryotic membranes, respectively. Thereby the increased membrane-affinity of the peptide mixtures not only explains their synergistic antimicrobial activity, but at the same time provides a new concept to increase the therapeutic window of combinatorial drugs
Detection of Mycoplasma agalactiae by Polymerase Chain Reaction in Jordanian Sheep and Goat Herds
The aim of the study was to ascertain whether sheep and goats from selected Jordanian herds were infected with Mycoplasma agalactiae, the most common aetiological agent of contagious agalactia of sheep and goats. All examined animals showed clinical signs of disease at the time of sample collection. The group included 35 animals, 15 sheep and 20 goats. For microbiological examination, a total of 107 swabs were taken from conjunctival, nasal, vaginal or preputial mucosae and from the external auditory canal. Identification of the species isolated was carried out by a polymerase chain reaction. Of the 35 animals, 21 (4 sheep and 17 goats) tested positive for Mycoplasma agalactiae. These results confirmed our assumption that this mycoplasma species is present in Jordanian herds and, for the first time, provided evidence that contagious agalactia of sheep and goats occurs in Jordan
Charge separation relative to the reaction plane in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Measurements of charge dependent azimuthal correlations with the ALICE
detector at the LHC are reported for Pb-Pb collisions at TeV. Two- and three-particle charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in
the pseudo-rapidity range are presented as a function of the
collision centrality, particle separation in pseudo-rapidity, and transverse
momentum. A clear signal compatible with a charge-dependent separation relative
to the reaction plane is observed, which shows little or no collision energy
dependence when compared to measurements at RHIC energies. This provides a new
insight for understanding the nature of the charge dependent azimuthal

Light-Induced Nanosecond Relaxation Dynamics of Rhenium-Labeled Pseudomonas aeruginosa Azurins.
Time-resolved phosphorescence spectra of Re(CO)3(dmp)+ and Re(CO)3(phen)+ chromophores (dmp = 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) bound to surface histidines (H83, H124, and H126) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin mutants exhibit dynamic band maxima shifts to lower wavenumbers following 3-exponential kinetics with 1-5 and 20-100 ns major phases and a 1.1-2.5 μs minor (5-16%) phase. Observation of slow relaxation components was made possible by using an organometallic Re chromophore as a probe whose long phosphorescence lifetime extends the observation window up to ∼3 μs. Integrated emission-band areas also decay with 2- or 3-exponential kinetics; the faster decay phase(s) is relaxation-related, whereas the slowest one [360-680 ns (dmp); 90-140 ns (phen)] arises mainly from population decay. As a result of shifting bands, the emission intensity decay kinetics depend on the detection wavelength. Detailed kinetics analyses and comparisons with band-shift dynamics are needed to disentangle relaxation and population decay kinetics if they occur on comparable timescales. The dynamic phosphorescence Stokes shift in Re-azurins is caused by relaxation motions of the solvent, the protein, and solvated amino acid side chains at the Re binding site in response to chromophore electronic excitation. Comparing relaxation and decay kinetics of Re(dmp)124K122Cu II and Re(dmp)124W122Cu II suggests that electron transfer (ET) and relaxation motions in the W122 mutant are coupled. It follows that nanosecond and faster photo-induced ET steps in azurins (and likely other redox proteins) occur from unrelaxed systems; importantly, these reactions can be driven (or hindered) by structural and solvational dynamics
Measurement of charm production at central rapidity in proton-proton collisions at TeV
The -differential production cross sections of the prompt (B
feed-down subtracted) charmed mesons D, D, and D in the rapidity
range , and for transverse momentum GeV/, were
measured in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ALICE
detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis exploited the hadronic
decays DK, DK, DD, and their charge conjugates, and was performed on a
nb event sample collected in 2011 with a
minimum-bias trigger. The total charm production cross section at TeV and at 7 TeV was evaluated by extrapolating to the full phase space
the -differential production cross sections at TeV
and our previous measurements at TeV. The results were compared
to existing measurements and to perturbative-QCD calculations. The fraction of

Transverse sphericity of primary charged particles in minimum bias proton-proton collisions at , 2.76 and 7 TeV
Measurements of the sphericity of primary charged particles in minimum bias
proton--proton collisions at , 2.76 and 7 TeV with the ALICE
detector at the LHC are presented. The observable is linearized to be collinear
safe and is measured in the plane perpendicular to the beam direction using
primary charged tracks with GeV/c in . The
mean sphericity as a function of the charged particle multiplicity at
mid-rapidity () is reported for events with different
scales ("soft" and "hard") defined by the transverse momentum of the leading
particle. In addition, the mean charged particle transverse momentum versus
multiplicity is presented for the different event classes, and the sphericity
distributions in bins of multiplicity are presented. The data are compared with
calculations of standard Monte Carlo event generators. The transverse
sphericity is found to grow with multiplicity at all collision energies, with a
steeper rise at low , whereas the event generators show the
opposite tendency. The combined study of the sphericity and the mean with multiplicity indicates that most of the tested event generators
produce events with higher multiplicity by generating more back-to-back jets
resulting in decreased sphericity (and isotropy). The PYTHIA6 generator with
tune PERUGIA-2011 exhibits a noticeable improvement in describing the data,
