    Measuring new product and service portfolio advantage

    The current study introduces the concept of new product and service portfolio (NPSP) advantage by creating and validating a three-dimensional measurement method that reflects novelty, meaningfulness and superiority – the three characteristics of NPSP advantage. Based on industry-wide homogeneous generalizable quantitative data from 108 manufacturing companies, the results indicate that these three characteristics of NPSP – novelty, meaningfulness and superiority – are distinct characteristics that together constitute NPSP advantage. This paper contributes to the literature on new product development, as its findings suggest that when measuring the concept of NPSP advantage, the three-dimensional construct that includes the three aforementioned characteristics has a better fit to the data than the unidimensional structure. Because it considers both new products and services, the current study offers an integrated approach to measure the desired innovation process outcome (NPSP advantage).     Multi-factor service design: identification and consideration of multiple factors of the service in its design process

    Service design is a multidisciplinary area that helps innovate services by bringing new ideas to customers through a design-thinking approach. Services are affected by multiple factors, which should be considered in designing services. In this paper, we propose the multi-factor service design (MFSD) method, which helps consider the multi-factor nature of service in the service design process. The MFSD method has been developed through and used in five service design studies with industry and government. The method addresses the multi-factor nature of service for systematic service design by providing the following guidelines: (1) identify key factors that affect the customer value creation of the service in question (in short, value creation factors), (2) define the design space of the service based on the value creation factors, and (3) design services and represent them based on the factors. We provide real stories and examples from the five service design studies to illustrate the MFSD method and demonstrate its utility. This study will contribute to the design of modern complex services that are affected by varied factors

    Market share and customer satisfaction : what is the missing link?

    In the literature, there are contradicting views in regards to the influence of customer satisfaction on market share. In order to make a contribution to the deeper understanding of the parameters that characterise this relationship and analyse its managerial implications, the present paper investigates this relationship in a sample of 600 Greek consumers. Data were analysed for brands from two industries (i.e., bottled water and ouzo). The study concludes that the relationship of customer satisfaction and market share is contingent upon the degree of homogeneity/heterogeneity of the market

    High prevalence of PROP1 gene mutations in Hungarian patients with childhood-onset combined anterior pituitary hormone deficiency

    Combined pituitary hormone deficiency is characterized by the impaired production of pituitary hormones, commonly including growth hormone. The pathomechanism of the childhood-onset form of this disorder may involve germline mutations of genes encoding pituitary transcription factors, of which PROP1 gene mutations have been studied most extensively. However, controversy exists about the significance of PROP1 gene mutations, as both low and high frequencies have been reported in these patients. Because the different results may be related to differences in patient populations and/or the variability of clinical phenotypes, we performed the present study to examine the prevalence and spectrum of PROP1 gene mutations in 35 patients with non-acquired childhood-onset growth hormone deficiency combined with at least one other anterior pituitary hormone deficiency. Genetic testing indicated the presence of disease-causing mutations in exons 2 and 3 of the PROP1 gene in 15 patients (43% of all patients; homozygous mutations in 10 patients and compound heterozygous mutations in 5 patients). Comparison of clinical data of patients with and without PROP1 gene mutations failed to show significant differences, except an earlier growth retardation detected in patients with PROP1 gene mutations. In one patient with PROP1 gene mutation, radiologic imaging showed an enlargement of the anterior lobe of the pituitary, whereas the other patients had hypoplastic or normal pituitary gland. All patients with PROP1 gene mutations had normal posterior pituitary lobe by radiologic imaging. These results indicate that using our inclusion criteria for genetic testing, PROP1 gene mutations can be detected in a high proportion of Hungarian patients with non-acquired childhood-onset growth hormone deficiency combined with at least one other anterior pituitary hormone defect
