    A search for rapidly pulsating hot subdwarf stars in the GALEX survey

    NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) provided near- and far-UV observations for approximately 77 percent of the sky over a ten-year period; however, the data reduction pipeline initially only released single NUV and FUV images to the community. The recently released Python module gPhoton changes this, allowing calibrated time-series aperture photometry to be extracted easily from the raw GALEX data set. Here we use gPhoton to generate light curves for all hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars that were observed by GALEX, with the intention of identifying short-period, p-mode pulsations. We find that the spacecraft's short visit durations, uneven gaps between visits, and dither pattern make the detection of hot subdwarf pulsations difficult. Nonetheless, we detect UV variations in four previously known pulsating targets and report their UV pulsation amplitudes and frequencies. Additionally, we find that several other sdB targets not previously known to vary show promising signals in their periodograms. Using optical follow-up photometry with the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network, we confirm p-mode pulsations in one of these targets, LAMOST J082517.99+113106.3, and report it as the most recent addition to the sdBVr class of variable stars.Comment: 11 Pages, 8 Figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Kin selection, quorum sensing and virulence in pathogenic bacteria

    Bacterial growth and virulence often depends upon the cooperative release of extracellular factors excreted in response to quorum sensing (QS).We carried out an in vivo selection experiment in mice to examine how QS evolves in response to variation in relatedness (strain diversity), and the consequences for virulence. We started our experiment with two bacterial strains: a wild-type that both produces and responds to QS signal molecules, and a lasR (signal-blind) mutant that does not release extracellular factors in response to signal. We found that: (i) QS leads to greater growth within hosts; (ii) high relatedness favours the QS wild-type; and (iii) low relatedness favours the lasR mutant. Relatedness matters in our experiment because, at relatively low relatedness, the lasR mutant is able to exploit the extracellular factors produced by the cells that respond to QS, and hence increase in frequency. Furthermore, our results suggest that because a higher relatedness favours cooperative QS, and hence leads to higher growth, this will also lead to a higher virulence, giving a relationship between relatedness and virulence that is in the opposite direction to that usually predicted by virulence theory

    Expert chess memory: Revisiting the chunking hypothesis

    After reviewing the relevant theory on chess expertise, this paper re-examines experimentally the finding of Chase and Simon (1973a) that the differences in ability of chess players at different skill levels to copy and to recall positions are attributable to the experts' storage of thousands of chunks (patterned clusters of pieces) in long-term memory. Despite important differences in the experimental apparatus, the data of the present experiments regarding latencies and chess relations between successively placed pieces are highly correlated with those of Chase and Simon. We conclude that the 2-second inter-chunk interval used to define chunk boundaries is robust, and that chunks have psychological reality. We discuss the possible reasons why Masters in our new study used substantially larger chunks than the Master of the 1973 study, and extend the chunking theory to take account of the evidence for large retrieval structures (templates) in long-term memory

    Bayesian High-Redshift Quasar Classification from Optical and Mid-IR Photometry

    We identify 885,503 type 1 quasar candidates to i<22 using the combination of optical and mid-IR photometry. Optical photometry is taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III: Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS-III/BOSS), while mid-IR photometry comes from a combination of data from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) "ALLWISE" data release and several large-area Spitzer Space Telescope fields. Selection is based on a Bayesian kernel density algorithm with a training sample of 157,701 spectroscopically-confirmed type-1 quasars with both optical and mid-IR data. Of the quasar candidates, 733,713 lack spectroscopic confirmation (and 305,623 are objects that we have not previously classified as photometric quasar candidates). These candidates include 7874 objects targeted as high probability potential quasars with 3.5<z<5 (of which 6779 are new photometric candidates). Our algorithm is more complete to z>3.5 than the traditional mid-IR selection "wedges" and to 2.2<z<3.5 quasars than the SDSS-III/BOSS project. Number counts and luminosity function analysis suggests that the resulting catalog is relatively complete to known quasars and is identifying new high-z quasars at z>3.     Motor response to a dopamine D3 receptor preferring agonist compared to apomorphine in levodopa-primed 1-methyl-4-phenyl1,3,3,6-tetrahydropyridine monkeys

    ABSTRACT The profile of dopamine receptor subtype activation contributing to the therapeutic efficacy and motor response complications of levodopa (nonselective pro-agonist) in Parkinson&apos;s disease remains unclear. Potent, selective, short-acting dopamine D2 receptor subfamily agonists show good antiparkinsonian efficacy but produce dyskinesias comparable to levodopa. Nonetheless, agonists displaying higher affinity for dopamine receptors other than the D2 subtype may have a better therapeutic index. To clarify this issue, we compared the nonselective dopamine D1/D2 receptor subfamilies agonist apomorphine to the dopamine D3 receptor preferring agonist [R-(Ï©)-trans-3,4,4a,10b-tetrahydro-4-propyl-2H,5H-[1]benzopyrano[4,3-b]-1,4-oxazin-9-ol] (PD 128,907) in 6 levodopa-primed , 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-lesioned parkinsonian monkeys with reproducible dyskinesias. Single s.c. dosing with the lowest fully effective dose of apomorphine (averaging 27.9 Ïź 4.5 g/kg) and PD 128,907 (averaging 41.7 Ïź 4.4 g/kg) yielded equivalent antiparkinsonian efficacy on the behavioral scale and portable activity monitoring used. A comparable significant dose-dependent increase in the response magnitude and duration was seen with two higher doses. The severity of dyskinesia was also similar between the two drugs. When the lower dose for each drug was administered six times at a fixed 90-min interval, both drugs remained efficacious with no significant tolerance observed. The D3 receptor preferring antagonist U-99194A significantly reduced the motor effects of both apomorphine and PD 128,907. Thus, increased D3 receptor tone does not acutely ameliorate dyskinesias in levodopaprimed parkinsonian monkeys. Given the reported lack of affinity of PD 128,907 for central D1 receptors, our data support the concept that the pharmacological activation of D1 receptors is not mandatory for relief of parkinsonism and production of dyskinesia

    A Mid-Infrared Study of the Class 0 Cluster in LDN 1448

    We present ground-based mid-infrared observations of Class 0 protostars in LDN 1448. Of the five known protostars in this cloud, we detected two, L1448N:A and L1448C, at 12.5, 17.9, 20.8, and 24.5 microns, and a third, L1448 IRS 2, at 24.5 microns. We present high-resolution images of the detected sources, and photometry or upper limits for all five Class 0 sources in this cloud. With these data, we are able to augment existing spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for all five objects and place them on an evolutionary status diagram.Comment: Accepted by the Astronomical Journal; 26 pages, 9 figure

    Visual search in ecological and non-ecological displays: Evidence for a non-monotonic effect of complexity on performance

However, most studies have used artificial stimuli with low ecological validity. In addition, little is known about the effects of target complexity and expertise in visual search. Here, we investigate visual search in three conditions of complexity (detecting a king, detecting a check, and detecting a checkmate) with chess players of two levels of expertise (novices and club players). Results show that the influence of target complexity depends on level of structure of the visual display. Different functional relationships were found between artificial (random chess positions) and ecologically valid (game positions) stimuli: With artificial, but not with ecologically valid stimuli, a “pop out” effect was present when a target was visually more complex than distractors but could be captured by a memory chunk. This suggests that caution should be exercised when generalising from experiments using artificial stimuli with low ecological validity to real-life stimuli.This study is funded by Brunel University and the article is made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund
