    ANT SPECIES DIVERSITY AND COMPOSITION AT MLINGANO MANGO ORCHARD IN TANZANIA

    ABSTRACT: Ants are major decomposers and they are sensitive to any human influence in our environment. Presence or absence of ants in cropland habitat is resulted from alteration of forest habitat into cropland. Ant's species diversity in mango orchard was considered as an important biodiversity indicator due to alteration of the primary forest into cropland habitat. Ants were sampled from mango trees searching species of ants from tree bases to 2M high. Dental rolls with 10% sugar as attractant bait were also used to attract ground preference of ant species. Attractant bait was placed on a tree base for 30 minutes and thereafter inspected for data collection. This study has revealed that ant species composition in mango orchard varies according to cropping system. Dominance of species was Crematogaster followed by Pheidole megacephala and the least was Oecopyhlla longinoda ants. Comparison of species composition revealed that there were significant differences. Species with low representative individuals were considered as extinct or rare species. The intended study was carried out at Mlingano mango orchard with the aim to determine the ant's species diversity and composition. The results from this work will help in developing sustainable biodiversity conservation programmes as well as for future research

    Emergence of Epidemic Neisseria meningitidis Serogroup X Meningitis in Togo and Burkina Faso

    Serogroup X meningococci (NmX) historically have caused sporadic and clustered meningitis cases in sub-Saharan Africa. To study recent NmX epidemiology, we analyzed data from population-based, sentinel and passive surveillance, and outbreak investigations of bacterial meningitis in Togo and Burkina Faso during 2006–2010. Cerebrospinal fluid specimens were analyzed by PCR. In Togo during 2006–2009, NmX accounted for 16% of the 702 confirmed bacterial meningitis cases. Kozah district experienced an NmX outbreak in March 2007 with an NmX seasonal cumulative incidence of 33/100,000. In Burkina Faso during 2007–2010, NmX accounted for 7% of the 778 confirmed bacterial meningitis cases, with an increase from 2009 to 2010 (4% to 35% of all confirmed cases, respectively). In 2010, NmX epidemics occurred in northern and central regions of Burkina Faso; the highest district cumulative incidence of NmX was estimated as 130/100,000 during March–April. Although limited to a few districts, we have documented NmX meningitis epidemics occurring with a seasonal incidence previously only reported in the meningitis belt for NmW135 and NmA, which argues for development of an NmX vaccine

    Assessing dynamics of forced livestock movements, livelihoods and future development options for pastoralists/agro-pastoralists in Ruvuma and Lindi Regions, in the Southern Tanzania

    The study that aimed at understanding the dynamics of forced livestock movements and pastoral livelihood and development options was conducted in Lindi and Ruvuma regions, using both formal and informal approaches. Data were collected from 60 randomly selected Agro-pastoralists/Pastoralists and native farmers using a structured questionnaire. Four villages were involved; two in Lindi region (Matandu and Mkwajuni) and the other two in Ruvuma region (Gumbiro and Muhuwesi). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of SPSS to generate means and frequencies. The results indicate that a large number of animals moved into the study area following the eviction order of the government in Ihefu wetlands in 2006/2007. Lindi region was earmarked by the government to receive all the evicted pastoralists. However, by 2008 only 30% of the total cattle that were expected to move into the region had been received. Deaths of many animals on transit, selling of the animals to pay for transportation and other costs while on transit and many pastoralists settling in Coastal and Ruvuma regions before reaching their destinations were reported to be the reasons for the discrepancy observed. To mitigate anticipated conflicts between farmers and pastoralists, Participatory Land Use Management (PLUM) plans were developed in all the study villages in order to demarcate village land area into different uses, including grazing, cropping, settlement and forests. Land units for grazing were supposed to be provided with all necessary livestock infrastructures (dips, charcoal dams, livestock markets and stock routes). However, the land use plans were not able to prevent the anticipated conflicts because most of the livestock infrastructures were lacking, the land use boundaries were not clearly demarcated and there was limited enforcement of village by-laws, since most had not been enacted by the respective district councils. Similarly, the areas allocated for grazing were inadequate for the number of livestock available and thus the carrying capacity exceeded. Thus, land resource-based conflicts between farmers and pastoralists were emerging in the study areas for the reason that most of the important components in the PLUM plans were not in place. Nevertheless, the arrival of pastoralists in the study areas had positive effects on food security and growth of social interactions between pastoralists and farmers including marriages between them. Environmental degradations due to the arrival of livestock were also not evident. Thus, there is a need for the government to purposely set aside enough grazing land with all necessary infrastructures in place for the agro-pastoral/pastoral communities in the country

    Clonal Relationship among Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor Strains Causing the Largest Cholera Epidemic in Kenya in the Late 1990s

    Eighty Vibrio cholerae O1 strains selected to represent the 1998-to-1999 history of the largest cholera epidemic in Kenya were characterized by ribotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility, and random amplified polymorphic DNA patterns. Except for 19 strains from 4 local outbreaks in North Eastern Province along the Somalia border, the other 61 strains from 25 outbreaks occurring in districts scattered around the country were all ribotype B27 and resistant to chloramphenicol, spectinomycin, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim. The 61 strains showed similar and specific amplified DNA patterns. These findings indicate that the predominant strains that caused the Kenyan epidemic had a clonal origin and suggest that ribotype B27 strains, which first appeared in West Africa in 1994, have had a rapid spread to eastern Africa
