The southern dust pillars of the Carina Nebula
We present preliminary results from a detailed study towards four previously
detected bright mid-infrared sources in the southern part of the Carina Nebula:
G287.73--0.92, G287.84--0.82, G287.93--0.99 and G288.07--0.80. All of these
sources are located at the heads of giant dust pillars that point towards the
nearby massive star cluster, Trumpler 16. It is unclear if these pillars are
the prime sites for a new generation of triggered star formation or if instead
they are the only remaining parts of the nebula where ongoing star fromation

Exponential Distributions in a Mechanical Model for Earthquakes
We study statistical distributions in a mechanical model for an earthquake
fault introduced by Burridge and Knopoff [R. Burridge and L. Knopoff, {\sl
Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am.} {\bf 57}, 341 (1967)]. Our investigations on the size
(moment), time duration and number of blocks involved in an event show that
exponential distributions are found in a given range of the paramenter space.
This occurs when the two kinds of springs present in the model have the same,
or approximately the same, value for the elastic constants. Exponential
distributions have also been seen recently in an experimental system to model
earthquake-like dynamics [M. A. Rubio and J. Galeano, {\sl Phys. Rev. E} {\bf

Exactly solvable model with two conductor-insulator transitions driven by impurities
We present an exact analysis of two conductor-insulator transitions in the
random graph model. The average connectivity is related to the concentration of
impurities. The adjacency matrix of a large random graph is used as a hopping
Hamiltonian. Its spectrum has a delta peak at zero energy. Our analysis is
based on an explicit expression for the height of this peak, and a detailed
description of the localized eigenvectors and of their contribution to the
peak. Starting from the low connectivity (high impurity density) regime, one
encounters an insulator-conductor transition for average connectivity
1.421529... and a conductor-insulator transition for average connectivity
3.154985.... We explain the spectral singularity at average connectivity
e=2.718281... and relate it to another enumerative problem in random graph

Re-entrant magnetic field induced charge and spin gaps in the coupled dual-chain quasi-one dimensional organic conductor Perylene[Pt(mnt)]
An inductive method is used to follow the magnetic field-dependent
susceptibility of the coupled charge density wave (CDW) and spin-Peierls (SP)
ordered state behavior in the dual chain organic conductor
Perylene[Pt(mnt)]. In addition to the coexisting SP-CDW state phase
below 8 K and 20 T, the measurements show that a second spin-gapped phase
appears above 20 T that coincides with a field-induced insulating phase. The
results support a strong coupling of the CDW and SP order parameters even in
high magnetic fields, and provide new insight into the nature of the magnetic
susceptibility of dual-chain spin and charge systems.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
