Flood discharge assessment - peak velocity meter - evaluation of a device for measuring flood plain flow velocity, progress to March 1990
HR Wallingford are studying methods of improving the assessment of flood discharge on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. This report describes the development of a technique for measuring flow velocity, which uses the principle of a deflecting vane and can be interrogated after the passage of a flood event. The instrument is principally designed for use on the flood plain. The report also reviews velocity and flow measurement techniques which provide an alternative to the more commonly accepted methods
The structure of flow in open channels - a literature search - volume 2
This report presents the result of a literature search into flow in open channels with particular interest in Flood Channels. The search is presented in the form of three files: a card index file developed on the Apricot micro computer associated with the Flood Channel Facility which indicates the source of the publication and gives details of any experimental facility; a precis of each paper or book accessed indicating the channel type studied, the aims of the paper, conclusions drawn and the nature of the instruments used in the study; details of the channels studies in previous research into flow interaction, secondary flow, turbulence, momentum transfer etc., unified in S.1 units. Three relevant dimensionless parameters are also presented

Three relevant dimension parameters are also presented
Permeable pavements
A literature search, funded by the Department of the Environment, was made which reviewed the available literature concerning the structural and hydrological characteristics of different types of permeable pavement. New commercial, industrial or residential developments in a catchment have the effect of increasing the volume and rate of storm run-off and can overload the existing sewerage system. Provision of new interceptor sewers and extra treatment capacity is very costly. A developer may therefore me required to restrict the rate of run-off entering an existing public sewer from the new site. This can be achieved by the use of detention tanks within the site but these can again be costly and may occupy valuable land

Flood discharge assessment - peak velocity meter - evaluation of a device for measuring flood plain flow velocity, progress to March 1991
Hydraulics Research Ltd are studying methods of improving the assessment of flood discharge on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The research is being carried out with the co-operation of the National Rivers Authorities in England and Wales, and includes the analysis of existing flood flow data, and the development of new methods for assessing flood discharge. This report describes modifications to and check calibrations of a peak velocity meter designed to measure flow velocities on flood plains and which can be interrogated after the passage if a flood. The report also describes the site installation of the meter
Flood discharge assessment - an engineering guide
This report is one of the two contract completion reports commissioned by MAFF and it describes the research outputs which can be translated immediately into engineering hydrometric practice. The methods will support the use of: extension of rating curves, the slope area method for calculation of river flows - especially channel roughness estimation, and the velocity area method for calculation of river flows
Flood discharge assessment - current UK practice
Hydraulics Research Limited, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, are studying methods of improving flood discharge assessment with the co-operation of the Water Authorities of England and Wales. This interim report outlines the methods currently adopted by the Water Authorities in measuring flood discharges and the uncertainties associated with these measurements based on replies received by Hydraulics Research Limited. Proto-type and experimental work is highlighted that confirms the need for greater accuracy in flood flow measurement. A brief literature review relating to flow measurement and flood discharge is listed
