    Isothermal fatigue behavior of a (90)(sub 8) SiC/Ti-15-3 composite at 426 C

    The transverse fatigue behavior of a unidirectional, SiC/Ti-15-3 composite (35 v/o SiC, (90)(sub 8)) was evaluated at 426 C. The fatigue behavior of the composite along the fiber direction (0)(sub 8) and of unreinforced Ti-15-3 alloy were also studied for comparison purposes. The (90)(sub 8) composite fatigue life was much shorter then (0)(sub 8) life. Further, (90)(sub 8) fatigue life was also found to be far lower than that of the unreinforced Ti-15-3 alloys. A simple one-dimensional model for (90)(sub 8) fatigue behavior indicated that the short life of the composite in this orientation resulted, in large part, from weak fiber-matrix bond strength. This conclusion was supported by fractographic evidence showing numerous initiation sites along the fiber-matrix interfaces

    Single crystal superalloys such as PWA 1480 are considered for turbopump blades in the main engines of the space shuttle. As fatigue resistance in a hydrogen environment is a key issue in this application, a study of the effect of porosity and gamma-gamma' eutectic content on the fatigue life of a hydrogen-charged PWA 1480 was performed. Porosity and eutectic were linked to fatigue initiation, and therefore reduction of either of both may be one means to improve fatigue life of PWA 1480 when hydrogen is present

    Fatigue crack propagation of nickel-base superalloys at 650 deg C

    The 650 C fatigue crack propagation behavior of two nickel-base superalloys, Rene 95 and Waspaloy, is studied with particular emphasis placed on understanding the roles of creep, environment, and two key grain boundary alloying additions, boron and zirconium. Comparison of air and vacuum data shows the air environment to be detrimental over a wide range of frequencies for both alloys. More in-depth analysis on Rene 95 shows at lower frequencies, such as 0.02 Hz, failure in air occurs by intergranular, environmentally-assisted creep crack growth, while at higher frequencies, up to 5.0 Hz, environmental interactions are still evident but creep effects are minimized. The effect of B and Zr in Waspaloy is found to be important where environmental and/or creep interactions are presented. In those instances, removal of B and Zr dramatically increases crack growth and it is therefore plausible that effective dilution of these elements may explain a previously observed trend in which crack growth rates increase with decreasing grain size

    Specimens of single crystal PWA 1480 with group of zone axes (100) orientation, bare, or with NiCoCrAlY coating PWA 276, were tested in low cycle fatigue (LCF) at 650, 870, and 1050 C, and in simplified bithermal thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) tests between these temperatures. These tests were examined as a bridge between isothermal LCF and general TMF. In the bithermal test, an inelastic strain is applied at one temperature, T sub max, and reversed at T sub min. The out-of-phase (OP) test type imposing tension at T sub min and compression at T sub max received most study, since it was more damaging than the in-phase type.     The high temperature fatigue behavior of a metal matrix composite (MMC) consisting of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (Ti-15-3) matrix reinforced by 33 vol percent of continuous unidirectional SiC fibers was experimentally and analytically evaluated. Isothermal MMC fatigue tests with constant amplitude loading parallel to the fiber direction were performed at 300 and 550 C. Comparative fatigue tests of the Ti-15-3 matrix alloy were also conducted. Composite fatigue behavior and the in-situ stress state of the fiber and matrix were analyzed with a micromechanical model, the Concentric Cylinder Model (CCM). The cyclic stress-strain response of the composite was stable at 300 C. However, an increase in cyclic mean strain foreshortened MMC fatigue life at high strain ranges at 550 C. Fatigue tests of the matrix alloy and CCM analyses indicated this response was associated with stress relaxation of the matrix in the composite

    Single crystal superalloy specimens with various crystallographic directions along their axes were tested in compression at room temperature, 650, 760, 870, and 980 deg C. These results are compared with the tensile behavior studied previously. The alloy, Rene N4, was developed for gas turbine engine blades and has the nominal composition 3.7 Al, 4.2 Ti, 4 Ta, 0.5 Nb, 6 W, 1.5 Mo 9 Cr. 7.5 Co, balance Ni, in weight percent. Slip trace analysis showed that primary cube slip occurred even at room temperature for the 111 specimens. With increasing test temperature more orientations exhibited primary cube slip, until at 870 deg C only the 100 and 011 specimens exhibited normal octahedral slip. The yield strength for octahedral slip was numerically analysed using a model proposed by Lall, Chin, and Pope to explain deviations from Schmid's Law in the yielding behavior of a single phase Gamma prime alloy, Ni3(Al, Nb). The Schmid's Law deviations in Rene N4 were found to be largely due to a tension-compression anisotropy. A second effect, which increases trength for orientations away from 001, was found to be small in Rene N4. Analysis of recently published data on the single crystal superalloy PWA 1480 yielded the same result

    Matrix Fatigue Cracking Mechanisms of Alpha(2) TMC for Hypersonic Applications

    The objective of this work was to understand matrix cracking mechanisms in a unidirectional alpha(sub 2) TMC in possible hypersonic applications. A (0)(sub 8) SCS-6/Ti-24Al-11Nb (at. percent) TMC was first subjected to a variety of simple isothermal and nonisothermal fatigue cycles to evaluate the damage mechanisms in simple conditions. A modified ascent mission cycle test was then performed to evaluate the combined effects of loading modes. This cycle mixes mechanical cycling at 150 and 483 C, sustained loads, and a slow thermal cycle to 815 C. At low cyclic stresses and strains more common in hypersonic applications, environment-assisted surface cracking limited fatigue resistance. This damage mechanism was most acute for out-of-phase nonisothermal cycles having extended cycle periods and the ascent mission cycle. A simple linear fraction damage model was employed to help understand this damage mechanism. Time-dependent environmental damage was found to strongly influence out-of-phase and mission life, with mechanical cycling damage due to the combination of external loading and CTE mismatch stresses playing a smaller role. The mechanical cycling and sustained loads in the mission cycle also had a smaller role

    Fatigue Behavior of a Third Generation PM Disk Superalloy

    The fatigue behavior of a 3rd generation PM disk alloy, LSHR, was studied at 1300 F. Tensile, creep, and fatigue tests were run on smooth and notched (Kt = 2) bars under a variety of conditions. Analysis of smooth bar fatigue data, run under strain and load control with R ratios of 0 and -1, showed that a stress based Smith-Watson-Topper approach could collapse the data set. While the tensile and creep data showed substantial notch strengthening at 1300 F, the fatigue data showed a life deficit for the notch specimens. A viscoplastic finite element model, which accounted for stress relaxation at the notch tip, provided the best correlation between the notched and smooth bar behavior, although the fatigue data was not fully rationalized based on this simplified viscoplastic model of the stresses at the notch tip.Inclusion of a 90 sec dwell at peak load was found to dramatically decrease notch fatigue life. This result was shown to be consistent with a simple linear creep-fatigue damage rule, where creep damage dominated at low stresses and fatigue damage was more prevalent at higher stresses

    Tensile and Creep Property Characterization of Potential Brayton Cycle Impeller and Duct Materials

    This paper represents a status report documenting the work on creep of superalloys performed under Project Prometheus. Cast superalloys have potential applications in space as impellers within closed-loop Brayton cycle nuclear power generation systems. Likewise wrought superalloys are good candidates for ducts and heat exchangers transporting the inert working gas in a Brayton-based power plant. Two cast superalloys, Mar-M247LC and IN792, and a NASA GRC powder metallurgy superalloy, LSHR, are being screened to compare their respective capabilities for impeller applications. Several wrought superalloys including Hastelloy X, (Haynes International, Inc., Kokomo, IN), Inconel 617, Inconel 740, Nimonic 263, and Incoloy MA956 (Special Metals Corporation, Huntington, WV) are also being screened to compare their capabilities for duct applications. These proposed applications would require sufficient strength and creep resistance for long term service at temperatures up to 1200 K, with service times to 100,000 h or more. Conventional tensile and creep tests were performed at temperatures up to 1200 K on specimens extracted from the materials. Initial microstructure evaluations were also undertaken

    Notch Fatigue Strength of a PM Disk Superalloy

    New powder metallurgy (PM) disk superalloys, such as ME3, LSHR, and Alloy 10, have been developed in recent years which enable rim temperatures in turbine disk applications to approach 1300 F. Before these alloys can be utilized at 1300 F their long term durability must be ensured. One of the key requirements for disk rims is notch fatigue strength. This issue is extremely important and is a direct result of the blade attachment geometry employed at the disk rim. Further, the imposition of a dwell at maximum load, associated with take off and landing, can also affect notch fatigue strength. For these reasons a study has been undertaken to assess the notch dwell fatigue strength of a modern PM disk alloy through spin pit evaluation of a prototypical disk. The first element of this program involves screening potential heat treatments with respect to notch fatigue strength at 1300 F utilizing a conventional notch fatigue specimen with a stress concentration factor (K(sub t)) of 2 and a 90 sec dwell at peak load. The results of this effort are reported in this paper including the downselect of an optimal heat treatment, from a notch fatigue standpoint
