Niagara University has been aiding the surrounding impoverished community since 1965 with its service initiative, the Niagara University Community Action Program (NUCAP). The university also offers courses that incorporate service learning components in partnership with NUCAP. Service learning is defined and its benefits, especially to the students, are discussed. The ways in which students, faculty, and staff are made aware of and called to engage in the school’s Vincentian mission are described. The student-run NUCAP has made many students and alumni into effective leaders for service, social responsibility, and social change. Some are profiled. Staff service projects are also highlighted

Concern has grown in recent years over the seismic activity of the New Madrid seismic zone in Western Kentucky. McCracken County, Kentucky is located in this region. To permit emergency medical, supply, and equipment traffic into this area after an earthquake has occurred, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is interested in the possibility of keeping selected routes passable. This report lists the routes that have been investigated and recommended as being the routes in McCracken County that should be maintained in a passable condition. The recommended routes, US 60, US 68, and US 62 have been visually surveyed and all seismically significant features cataloged. These features are logged by their location on strip maps contained in Appendix A and a detailed listing of all the potentially critical features is given in Appendix B

Concern has grown in recent years over the seismic activity of the New Madrid seismic zone in Western Kentucky. In 1987, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet commissioned the Kentucky Transportation Center to analyze and assess the possible effects of an earthquake on highway facilities. Since 1987, over 1,000 miles of priority routes have been recommended for the transportation of goods and services after a major earthquake. This report summarizes the mitigation research that has been conducted. This report also discusses a plan for continuing earthquake mitigation in Kentucky through seminars, discusses bridge retrofitting, and makes recommendations for a post earthquake response
